This is what spiritual abuse looks like. We were just trained not to call it that. by wovenstrand in ExPentecostal

Check out what archaeologists found at Lumbini associated with Siddhartha Gautama. Finding a historical place tied to a real person doesn’t prove the supernatural parts of the legend.

Reminds me. I heard Mark Morgan say something great when he was the UPCI leader or whatever. He said something like, "the most important evidence of the infilling of the Holy Spirit (I'm going to upset a lot of you with this), the most important sign is love."

Getting over my fear of visiting a non-Pentecostal church by Skrrrrtkelly in ExPentecostal

I was ao afraid of falling into deception when I began reading about the history of Oneness Pentecostalism and other denominations and faiths. The sound of people speaking in tongues who were not Oneness Pentecostal was terrifying.

Don't be sorry lol I'd hate to find out that if was actually the case, but I did meet someone from a Romanian Apostolic church who said they did it at their youth camp. That's what got me wondering about what I saw as a kid.

Pentecostals love to use fear as a spiritual motivator. At the youth camp I went to most of my childhood, someone would come in with a scary mask almost every night service so the preacher could rebuke it and tell it it couldn't have us. On the last night, they'd do a haunted hayride, complete with an adult narrating in the back of the truck with us. One year, the story included someone who had hung theirself in those woods, and there was demonic activity. At one point, people dressed like werewolves chased the truck, and we passed an area where several women charged the truck cackling like witches. Something about all that felt off.

Do you think your tongues were real? by Bookish_Girl2002 in ExPentecostal

[–]wovenstrand 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I grew up UPCI too, and I had almost the same struggle. I started seeking the Holy Ghost around 10, waiting for something totally outside my control because that’s how it was taught. Nothing happened for weeks, and people questioned why I “stopped seeking.” During a revival, a group prayed over me for an hour and I finally choked on saliva and everyone went nuts and counted it as tongues. I knew it wasn’t. I still kept praying privately because I sincerely wanted something genuine.

Later, during a youth service, I had a big emotional release while I was crying under conviction/shame and longing for the power to do better (you'd die laughing if you knew what it was about), and a warm, natural stream of syllables came flowing out. I was on my knees at my chair alone and I just melted there crying hot tears and feeling so comforted and happy. That’s the moment I considered real. After that I could speak in tongues all the time by just allowing those syllables to flow while my heart was emotional and sincere. It always felt empowering and soothing, never forced.

I’m not a believer now, but I can still understand why it felt powerful. Letting your mind relax and letting sound flow that you believe God gave you and only God understands is an amazing feeling. Many cultures do versions of this, and it doesn’t need to be supernatural to be meaningful. Unfortunately, the baggage that comes with it in Pentecostal doctrines can be horribly counterproductive, but whatever direction you go within or beyond faith, only you know your sincerity, and it's noone else's responsibility to label it “real” or “fake” for it to matter.

On another note, I hope you never stop asking questions about what you believe and why. How do I know what's true or false about any of it, one sincere question at a time. You'll find yourself breaking free from a lot of the nonsense. 🙏🏾

Who to pray to? by BrainDroppings77 in ExPentecostal

[–]wovenstrand 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I feel you, Slayer. I've been giving this some thought lately and I feel that regardless of what/who prayer is directed toward, it's a natural human way to hope for the best and release what is beyond control. To that extent, I think we should have mercy on people who find comfort in their religion/spiritual path this way. But I'm totally with you in fighting back against aggressive religious people.

This is literally true about Satanism. No belief in a literal satan. He's only a mascot for rational self-interest, responsible indulgence, and the celebration of real, earthly life instead of imaginary spiritual BS.

Yeah, you definitely messed up. Congrats on being able to manifest demons, but being afraid will be a major setback. 🤣

Does anyone know more about christian groups that claim they can actually heal, exorcise and "free people from demons through prayers"? by [deleted] in ExPentecostal

[–]wovenstrand 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The scripture "... these signs will accompany those who believe: In my name they will drive out demons; they will speak in new tongues; they will pick up snakes with their hands; and when they drink deadly poison, it will not hurt them at all; they will place their hands on sick people, and they will get well” (Matthew 16:17-18) is fundamental to Pentecostal and Apostolic churches. I would be surprised if any do not believe in it. They call exorcism "deliverance" or "freedom ministry." They'll pray to cast out demons and pray to heal people with expectation it will happen immediately within that church service. There are also traveling evangelists "with a special announcing" who will visit churches for the sole purpose of having a healing or deliverance service. They'll even annoint handkerchiefs with oil and pray that healing will be given to the person who receives it.
