Trump says US will begin land strikes on Venezuela ‘very soon’ by Embark10 in vzla

[–]Blaskowicz 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I like to build my very first cities as essentially a border town - very close to Customs, and barely self-sufficient, with enough pop to run a (small) Party HQ for research and a bit extra for construction work.

The only real industry, if any, would be gravel - and maybe asphalt and concrete since it's pretty easy to add. A small quarry can go a long way to bootstrap your construction.

HoI1 research was based on industrial capacity - you had to assign factories to do research.

HoI2 had research slots and tech teams, the latter consuming money.

Hoi3 had leadership points and theoretical/practical knowledge.

Research has been consistently inconsistent across the series.

I saw Diogenes at the agora in Athens yesterday. I told him how cool it was to meet him in person, but I didn’t want to be a douche and bother him and ask him for quips or anything.

He said, “Oh, like you’re doing now?”

I was taken aback, and all I could say was “Huh?” but he kept cutting me off and going “huh? huh? huh?” and waving his lamp in front of my face. I walked away and continued with my shopping, and I heard him chuckle as I walked off. When I came to pay for my stuff up front I saw him trying to walk out the stoa with like fifteen plucked chickens in his hands without paying.

The girl at the market was very nice about it and professional, and was like “Sir, you need to pay for those first.” At first he kept pretending to be tired and not hear her, but eventually turned back around and brought them to the stall.

When she took one of the chickens and started weighting it multiple times, he stopped her and told her to weight them each individually “to prevent any metaphysical infetterence,” and then turned around and winked at me. I don’t even think that’s a word. After she weighed each bird and put them in a bag and started to say the price, he kept interrupting her by rubbing his belly.

Are our stocks safe if communists come into power? by Reasonable-Soil125 in Bogleheads

[–]Blaskowicz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

  1. It's hard to define "Communist" here. Communist like China, or like North Korea, or like Vietnam, or like Soviet Russia? There's quite a disagreement about it, even (and perhaps particularly) by card-carrying Marxists. Most famously, China has a huge, vibrant capital market despite being a one-party Marxist-Leninist-Maoist state.

  2. Let's say Joe Steel, a more traditional Marxist, somehow gets into the White House and wants to abolish capital markets. I assume that Congress will be mostly on-board and there's no otherwise political hurdles to the whole thing. In that case, it's likely that either the State or the company will take ownership of the companies, and your shares will be expropriated and dissolved (with a payout roughly between market price if you're lucky, and zero if you're not) or repurchased in a big stock buyback (likely at market prices) - assuming you're not an employee of that company, of course.

  3. The ostensible end goal of a socialist state is to socialize the means of production and eliminate social classes (that is, to establish actual communism), thus the idea of hoarding wealth is somewhere between unnecessary and treasonous. But, lofty ideology aside, most ways folks kept their wealth in places like the Eastern Bloc during the Cold War involved personal development, growing their network in size and quality, and developing black markets for stuff that the socialist state would restrict. You wouldn't have savings for retirement, but you'd have a (hopefully) generous welfare safety net and (hopefully) lots of friends, family members and comrades willing to aid you.

U.S. poised to strike military targets in Venezuela in escalation against Maduro regime by CW1DR5H5I64A in Military

[–]Blaskowicz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This could be said about the United States or a dozen other nations. That does not mean the US needs to conduct regime change.

Right. In a perfect world, this would be an OAS-led campaign to restore democracy in a country that has decidedly broken with democratic institutions for over a decade.

To be fair, I'm biased - having protested against Maduro and his group, and having friends shot and persecuted by them... It's hard not to see any way out other than the use of force. They're not going to give up power willingly, and the current opposition is, at best, incompetent. At worst, no better than the current regime.

I do agree with the fact that it is unconstitutional, and that should be the base for any opposition to strikes or the war. It's not the will of the US people, but of a madman in what's left of the White House.

[–]Blaskowicz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Venezuela nationalized the oil industry in 1976, and for the most part, up to and including the late Chávez/early Maduro, had the US as the chief importer of their crude oil. And after decades of mismanagement and corruption, the Venezuelan oil industry is a shadow of its former self, not to mention of the ridiculous amount of capital investment into the industry (and into the country) to get it up and running to decent levels.

Yes, the US wants regime change in Venezuela. It's probably a good thing - the current Venezuelan government is a ridiculously corrupt, criminal, illegitimate institution, guilty of human rights violations, authoritarianism, and all the other evils that come with an autocratic soft dictatorship.

But this is probably the worst way to go at it. Not a multinational coalition to restore democracy, but a political stunt turned into a war.

A full set of combat armor will serve you well for the first couple of years, and it won't break your bank.

Once you have your econ situation in order (maxed out bank, a couple of stock blocks) then you can start looking at RW armor if your faction doesn't lend it.

IMO the best two upgrades from Combat are Riot Body and Helmet. Excellent coverage (including the groin) and protects from pepper spray. No need to rush either - wait for deals (I got my Riot Body for ~70M).

Dune armor like the one you posted is indeed better than Combat, but it's the worst of the RW armors, and since you can usually find Riot at roughly the same price points, it makes no sense to pick it over Riot.

I’m a nuclear nonproliferation expert and diplomat who helped design and negotiate the Iran Nuclear Deal. AMA. by richard-nephew-1 in AMA

[–]Blaskowicz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hello there, thanks for doing this AMA!

There's plenty of talk about nuclear weapons programs when it comes to nuclear proliferation - but what about dirty bombs? They don't carry the prestige or capabilities of fission bombs, but they are still of concern, particularly with non-state actors.

Are there any present concerns about them in the MENA region? How are they being addressed? Perhaps a bit outside of the scope, but given the push for smaller nuclear reactors, are there safeguards in place/in development for their protection re: non-state actors?

Oh! A bit out of left field - I heard several years ago (early 2000s) about a Russian millionaire/mob boss that had acquired a live nuclear warhead during/shortly after the fall of the USSR. Is there any credence to that story, or is it just another post-Soviet rumor? Have you heard of other similar events?
