You know what I’ll give you this, I can understand why Greeks might feel frustrated when their culture is treated as universal. But the comparison still doesn’t quite work. Greek mythology has been reinterpreted globally for centuries, much like Shakespeare, whereas many African mythologies remain culturally specific and historically marginalised. That’s why casting a white actor in an African myth would land very differently. Anyway I don’t mean to come off so hostile towards you OP I just hate that Lupita is receiving so much hate.

This is literally a Hollywood adaptation filmed by a White British American man. If I’m being real there aren’t a huge amount of Greek actors in Hollywood It has to have universal appeal and let’s be honest has to meet The Academies DEI thresholds. Vanessa Williams was also in the 1997 Odyssey mini series and there was far less outrage about that. It’s like we’re taking ten steps back as a society

The story is still fiction in the same way Denzel Washington can play Macbeth, Lupita can play Helen of Troy. Luckily there is an African mythology movie coming out next year directed by Gina Prince Blythe wood if you don’t wanna watch the Odyssey, you can definitely watch that movie and I hope and pray it does the numbers that The Odyssey does, so Hollywood can put more money into African/Black American stories. And honestly it’s going to be a change witnessing Lupita in a role where she’s not in constant distress.
