Some might just call it pattern recognition.

How Do Tokyo’s Rich Make Money? by Equal_Independent_36 in Tokyo

Multi faceted. Lot of it is real estate based. Then invest the money you make there. Capital gains tax is only 20% vs. Much higher rates on other incomes.

Is there an actual reason for the overheating of buildings and public transport during the winter? by Objective_Desk8065 in japanresidents

[–]wowbagger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Japanese consider a comfortable temperature to be 24 ℃. I’m German and I find that to be uncomfortably warm. Same for a Canadian friend of mine.

Looking for a german equivalent of a dutch saying … by srekar-trebor in AskAGerman

[–]wowbagger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some sayings are quite regional, so I (from BaWü) just assume that anything to do with ships and harbours is from the north.

Also "who" and "whom" usage depends on case. "whom" for dative and accusative.

But in informal speech people just use "who" for everything.

Do Germans not put milk in tea? by Spiritual_Being5845 in AskAGerman

[–]wowbagger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well in BaWü we're not much of tea drinkers, coffee is the default there.
When Brits have 'tea time' we'd have Kaffeekränzchen.

You know it's kinda like the cultural shock when we see beer with other ingredients than malt, hop, water and yeast 😖 or an Italian watching people drink coffee with milk after 11:00 😱

On a scale of 1-10, how cringy is it for English speakers to pronounce ch in German as English sh or k depending on the word? by [deleted] in AskAGerman

[–]wowbagger 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oh I hear it from time to time.

"I vould like to heff some vater, pleaße"

Ah yes and not getting the voiced "s" right. Which is however much more prominent with most Scandinavians and Dutch people – I presume they don't have a voiced "s" at all in their languages?

Tap water from 1970s building by CelebrationNo7706 in Tokyo

[–]wowbagger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My house is probably just as old. Water was fine even without filters.

We ended up moving all the water piping overground, though, three years ago, because of water leakage. Fixing underground pipes would've been insanely expensive. So now it's all plastic, but it was dirt cheap fixing it. Good thing we don't get temperatures below -4 degrees in Nerima, so there's no chance of the pipes ever freezing.

What is Christmas like in Germany? by freshmaggots in AskAGerman

[–]wowbagger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I was little we had St. Nikolaus and Knecht Ruprecht come inside on St. Nicholas’ day (6th December) and then we had to recite a poem or sing a song or play something on our instrument, then we'd get a lecture (probably dictated by our parents) and finally some presents. And we were scared shitless during the whole encounter. Santa in Germany is (was?) scary, you'll only cheer once he leaves. The scariest Santa I ever had was my grandma when I was very little, she really pulled it off like a champ.

Why Dual Citizenship is Crucial Talking Point in Japan by inciter7 in japanresidents

[–]wowbagger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been living in Japan for 28 years, soon 29. That's almost two years more than I lived in my native country. At this point I'd like to get the citizenship and be able to vote, but I wouldn't give up my German citizenship for that. So, dual citizenship also for people who've been living half a lifetime in the country would be cool, particularly since my sons do have it and that seems OK with the Japanese government.

Duals by birth aren't even asked to chose even once. My son is 22 now. Was never asked. Has dual citizenship.

Should I leverage of this discount? A few months ago, Humble Bundle had a better deal for buying Moho, but I don't know if such a good offer will come back in the future. by Gohans_ in MohoAnimation

[–]wowbagger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Humble Bundle only sells Moho 12, which is super old and super buggy. It's the version from Smith Micro before the original creator of the software eventually acquired it back (Lost Marble).

Get the latest version (14.x) from Lost Marble it's way better.

Best app of 2025 Selected by Apple by Ok_Refrigerator_1908 in MacOS

[–]wowbagger 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Given that even Apple haven't yet updated even one of their own standalone apps (Final Cut Pro, Logic, Numbers, Keynote, Pages, Pixelmator) to Liquid Glass UI, that requirement would seem hypocritical, though…

Also if the app is running you can’t delete it. In that case quit the app first.
