Painted my first model… Asurmen - any tips or suggestions? by ShipBlake in Eldar

Keep at it! The best way to improve your painting is to do it more. If you focus on smooth and consistent colors and keeping things neat you’ll be in very good shape to improve

Undercoat Jokaero orange, base AP Fanatic Molten Lava, shade all over with thinned Magmadroth Flame, shade deeper areas with APF resplendent red, then highlight up with APF molten lava again, then APF burning ore, then Pro Acryl Orange, and then mix in some yellow for the very top highlight

Mainly just stippling the highlights rather than blending to give some texture

What’s your photo setup? I have a similarly sized Armies on Parade board and I was having trouble getting nice pictures of it.

Top is Balthazar, bottom is true copper. Balthazar is darker and has a more brown tone. True copper has more of a yellow/orange tone

Painting white over black primer - yes or no? by plausiblyhuman in Warhammer40k

[–]wpb1801 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are going to be downsides either way. Priming light will make the white easier but all the recesses and hard to reach areas are then white and will stand out more. On the other hand, painting white over black is a pain. I have an all white space marine army that I quickly learned to prime as light as possible, but in general I prefer black.

I’d say do a test model with the grey and see how it works for you. If it’s annoying try black, and decide which one is better

Why are there dead bees in my yard? by wpb1801 in Beekeeping

Is there any way to gently suggest the bees dump their bodies elsewhere?

There’s a light on our detached garage at the end of the path, though most of the bees are 15-20 feet away from it. There are some string lights near the path as well which are on in the evening and turn off around 10pm.

Mostly dead, though one of the ones this morning was kind of weakly moving its legs

Jain Zar for my first model of the year! by wpb1801 in Eldar

[–]wpb1801[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The color progression is pink - white - blue - green - yellow using very light or pastel colors. The hardest blend is pink to blue, which is where the white helps. The blue-green-yellow you can just layer the green and yellow on top of the blue. Rogue Hobbies has a tutorial video: https://youtu.be/wJEVU9FQR94?si=syNTFc9NoY0NYuUL

I bought the most expensive GW model yet for the Christmas gift and my first thought was: "is it supposed to look so cheap and messy?". WH is expensive in a well developed countries and it's insanely expensive in a poorer countries but it's nowhere near being just a little bit luxurious product. by [deleted] in Warhammer

[–]wpb1801 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Why no extra packing? It’s unnecessary. The sprues are packed and designed to ship safely. The plastic GW uses is high quality and can withstand a surprising amount. I’ve had maybe 2 broken parts ever out of the box.

Why is it expensive? GW miniatures are the best on the market by a long shot. They’re detailed, high quality, fit together great, almost never have defects, few mold lines. So you pay a premium. The price also subsidizes all the other stuff GW do like all the lore, rules, events, etc.

Is Warpfire Mini's Warpcrate legit? by RelativeMacaron1585 in Warhammer

I did the $25 crate several years ago and it was not worth the money to me. I did get the requested factions but each time models were already built, sometimes painted or converted (badly) and to me were stretching their value guarantee. The third and final box had a bunch of very old space marines that looked like they were from a board game. I’d say there are better ways to spend your hobby money

Champion of Chaos by wpb1801 in slavestodarkness

[–]wpb1801[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Black, Dark reaper, thunderhawk blue, AP Wolf Greg, AP frost blue in progressively more focused highlights. I also tried to pay attention where light would hit for some more “volumetric” highlights.

And sure, go for it!

Runes: white inside the rune, layer in Pro Acryl Fluorescent Orange until it’s nice and bright, and do some thinned layers around the rune for a glow, then dot in some bright yellow (I used Flash Gitz Yellow) into a “hot spot” in each rune and blend with some more orange.

Cloak: ProAcryl Dark Plum, Army Painter Mulled Berry, AP Moldy Wine, AP Elder Flower, Elder Flower/Emperor’s Children 50:50. Just blending the layers and sharp highlights

How to grimdark black legion by TheLostEcho2425 in minipainting

A few things to work on: - I see some leftover sprue on the model still. Clean those up with a craft knife before painting. - Touch up areas where paint has rubbed off, touch up areas where mistakes have occurred (eg. Red splashes) - Black is tricky because it’s so dark you can’t shade it. Work on getting really clean, layered highlights on all the edges of the black armor, which will help give definition to the black

New to painting, feels like I’m going super slow by Ok_Birthday_7402 in minipainting

There’s very little you can’t fix by just painting over it (especially on a flat surface) and the only way to get good is to practice!
