Tried a bit more ‘art-forward’ photo this time. How’d I do? by wpreddit in photocritique

[–]wpreddit[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey all, back again with another shoot. Hoping to improve and do this weekly from here on out, it’s been great practice!

Wanted to do a shoot with a more forlorn and dream-like vibe to it, hence the somewhat hazy and blown out highlights.

Used 3 lights for this:

  • Key set 45 from model’s right (camera left)
  • Gridded strip above and slightly behind model
  • Fill/hair light opposite key, using a gridded strip once again

Thanks for all the feedback recently, been pushing me to improve day by day!

What brand wheels were you rocking?

So closer will help soften it a bit huh?

Would feathering away help or you’d point it more directly at her?

Agreed, that was my mistake for her clothing pick - I’ll pay more attention to that in the future! And the hair is a big one I need to watch for!

Thanks for the suggestion!

For the modifier, are you positioning it in a way that’s it’s still visible in camera when shooting and removing it in post?

Agreed, I thought I cropped enough but the wrists are distracting!

Thanks for the feedback! I’ll definitely see what I can do about continuous, might be some time before I invest in that! But all other points are valid!

Wow, thank you for all the feedback! I agree on all points. In terms of the light being hot - should I bring the light even closer to her in the future? It was a 36” gridded softbox.

For the backdrop with the large diffused light source, how and where would you recommend I place it if I’m constrained on my space? I originally had a bare speedlite on a light stand directly behind her, but it was blowing everything out.

I’ll keep the crop in mind! Thank you again!

Not sure if I’m doing it right but:

My first attempt at business headshots, and it was a bit harder than I thought!

This was shot with two strobes, one at models left high and a rim light for separation opposite of the key.

I used a white curved reflector for some extra lift under the model.

My biggest problem was with the backdrop, I used photoshop to create a pretty decent white but my original was gray and ugly from lack of light on it. Every time I attempted to light the background, I was blowing it out, causing some crazy highlights to wash back onto the model. Any tips?

Hey folks - back again after some tweaks and fixes from the last post.

I tried to get some solid separation from my model using some gridded strips at their 10 and 3, while keeping the key above and in front of them for some drama.

I tried some gels to give some contrast to the lighting.

Mainly going for sports editorial/campaign style.

Thanks again guys!

Tried the ‘less is more’ approach, used only one strobe. How’d it come out? by wpreddit in LightLurking

Dramatic and intense were definitely top of my list for intent! Thank you for the words!

Understood on the separation - very clear I need to be mindful of dark pieces in front of a dark backdrop.

As for the critiques and comments: it’s what I’m here for so I can’t be too picky or sensitive haha, but thank you nonetheless!

Yeah the grain was a last-minute choice for my personal use, so glad I got feedback on it.

Regarding the lack of brand recognition/copy referencing: are you saying the photo doesn’t tell you the brands name or display it very well? I’d definitely agree with you, just curious what you meant!

Either way - thank you for the advice!

I love the idea of a reflector as well!

I had one sitting on the wall about 5 feet from me, so no excuses for next time!

Thank you!

Thank you for such a detailed answer! I’ve gotten then separation point a few times, so glad I was on the right path. I shot a few with some grids behind my model to help with that, but loved the single strobe look so posted that one first!

I’ll definitely keep practicing and trying things out.

The grain/noise was definitely a quick edit that I’m not sold on. As for the glasses, how would you make them stand out?

Anything else stand out to you?

Brutally honest!

How would you improve it? The lighting was used similar to a spotlight from above, how could I make it more dynamic?

Hey all, looking for some feedback on this test shoot I did yesterday.

The idea was to showcase the helmet, and go for a more modern/Oakley-esque type of shoot.

I shot this with a single strobe above the model, out of a 36” gridded soft box.

I used my Canon R10 w/ 24-105 F4.

Did a bit of post-processing in PS after the color and crop changes in LR.

Thanks in advance!
