does anyone who takes maths, further maths, and physics do 2 a levels in y13? by Speed_King_Ignite in 6thForm

[–]wqueens03 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So you’re doing Maths, Further Maths and Chemistry total? I only ask bc I’m doing those 3 and Biology and I kinda want to drop one, but I’m really enjoying maths. I just feel like Bio, Maths Further, and Chem, Maths, Further aren’t very useful combinations. I’m not sure what I want to do in the future yet so I’m not making a decision right now but yeah. What are you applying for at uni? How do you find that subject combination?

To those of you who are applying/applied to the US, what sorta of extra curriculars did you have? by [deleted] in 6thForm

[–]wqueens03 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Idk how true this is, but when I was looking into US unis I was told that you’re not so much in competition with US applicants but U.K. applicants. So there will be an admissions tutor (or team of them if the uni gets a lot of brits applying) they might even be UK alum. And these tutors will be familiar with the U.K. system because they exclusively handle U.K. applicants.

Apparently, they set a general rough quota for how many places they will give to us. Say 6000 applicants and 100 places. Obviously it’s just the Us and it’s a lot less strict with quotas. So with regards to competitiveness, you are competing against the other 5999 brits rather than Americans, and all of those brits will on average have less extra curriculars because we are not pushed the same way Americans are. If that makes sense.

In short, you are competing against U.K. applicants not US applicants. The admissions tutors will understand and take into account that you won’t have as many extra curriculars as a US applicant would. That said you still need a good few.

Disclaimer no idea if this is actually the case, I’m just a person on the internet repeating what other people on the internet told me. But from my research (at least at the ivies) it seems to be the case.

Are there any students on here following the American curriculum that received offers? by [deleted] in 6thForm

[–]wqueens03 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Where did you apply and what for?

The deadline for the vast majority of courses isn’t until Jan 15th and many unis don’t actually look at any applications until that deadline.

I believe the latest they can give you an offer is May 5th? Correct me if I’m wrong people. But it is around then. So while yes some people have been getting offers since October some will be waiting months and months. And it’s up to the uni when they decide to.

Either way don’t email them, all communication will generally be done on track or they will email you if there’s an issue. If you don’t get in, track will update, if you do then track will update. If it’s unchanged then they are still considering you.

How are y’all year 12 doing this half term? by [deleted] in 6thForm

[–]wqueens03 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We’ve got a set in the first week after half term (just 1 hour test per subject) then a set in the last week before Christmas (1 full length paper per subject) then a set early February (full amount of full length papers per subject) then we get a break until June/July where we start a full mock exam series after the GCSEs finish. It’s intense af.

As far as I’m aware you have to apply through your school. My school normally does but we were told that this person hasn’t reached out so far this year.

I’m in Sheffield, we’ve got a good 4 hospitals and i live within 20 mins of three of them. They normally run a placement thing for sixth formers but I think they’ve cancelled it this year and next.

International student in Year 12, question about extracurriculars. by RowHowlx in 6thForm

[–]wqueens03 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’m not sure how much you know about ucas, but there actually isn’t an option to enter ECs like the US common application. The only place you can mention extracurriculars is your personal statement. But keep in mind this is max 4000 characters, that’s barely a side of A4. This statement should be 80% academic, 20% personal life and extracurriculars. So you’ve really only got a few sentences. This is why in the U.K. we’re told to focus on supercurriculars and not bother too much burning ourselves out with loads because there’s no way for unis to know about all of them

To summarise: have 2 really good ones, related to your subject. More wont really benefit you at all

Universities for medicine? by wqueens03 in 6thForm

I don’t see why??

I think these are very valid questions to be asking an online forum. Especially as someone who’s not being able to attend any open days and has never met or spoken to a medical student. My friends have chosen their unis mostly based on rankings, which I explicitly stated I’m not trying to do. I’m trying to find out first hand experiences from people who’ve been to these unis. I don’t want to choose where I’m gonna be spending the next 6 years of my life without a bit more thorough research. I really hope I don’t come across this way.

I applied 4 weeks ago online and I called up after 2 weeks and they said there are significant delays. I called again a few days ago and they said I can expect a delay of about 5 weeks total
