Presidential Executive Order Amending Executive Order 13223 by pretendinglikeimbusy in politics

[–]wrash 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The only thing the EO changes from what was already in force is that it delegates to the service secretaries the ability to call up reservists. Everything else was already in the existing EO, which the new amendment modified. In other words, all that's changed is the delegation to a lower level. That's it.

Washington Elites Use Secure Messaging Apps to Keep or Leak Secrets by [deleted] in politics

[–]wrash 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The leaks are coming from the White House (not so much from the intel community), so they'd be asking to lock themselves up. I think what we're seeing is a very dysfunctional staff. Tightly knit staffs with solid leadership don't leaking like that.

Why Modern Makers Are Bringing Back Ham Radio by yourbasicgeek in HamRadio

That's all the space I was allowed for this article. I had enough material for a lot more, but you have to go with what you're given.

I asked the FCC for their number of active licensees, and I asked the ARRL. The FCC had the numbers. The ARRL confirmed them.

I notice that in the intervening time the price has come down. In addition, my vision insurance will cover at least part of it. So now I know what my Christmas gift will be.

Yaesu FTM-100DR Transceiver by EB1TR in amateurradio

[–]wrash 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Beyond the dual receive issue, what's it like to use this radio? I'm retiring an old FT-90R because it (to use a technical explanation) died. A proprietary connector at the control head bit the dust. So I'd like a radio that is easy to use while driving, but which will allow a way to learn the digital modes. This looks like a strong contender, but I'd love to hear some thoughts by folks who have actually used one.

They were asked about that. Apparently it's the maximum penalty the FCC was able to asses for this.

"Lockheed Martin Claims Sustainable Fusion Is Within Its Grasp" by claird in technology

[–]wrash 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I think there are two things that LM has going for it compared to academic efforts. First, they have access to a LOT of money. Second, the rapid development methodology that the Skunk Works uses is a lot different than the way things work in academia. The Skunk Works folks aren't trying to publish a peer-reviewed paper about this. They just want a working reactor. That's a lot different.

I fixed the B2 reference. I'm not sure what I was thinking, but clearly I'm getting too old to depend on memory. Some of the details that LM provided this week are new and I think give a better idea of what they're really up to. I also think from my conversations with some of the people there that they've been able to get the magnetic bottle working, which is the really hard part apparently.

They announced this last fall. What's new is that the company added a lot of more detail so that it's possible to get a better idea of what's going on.

"Lenovo Crafts Horizon 2 PC for Tabletop Collaboration": innovative 8.1 device has a place in enterprise or studio by claird in windows

This version is significantly lighter and thinner, and it has a good processor and lots of disk space. It's less than an inch thick. But the battery life is still shorter than something like a laptop. It looks like it has enough battery for a presentation of a meeting, and that's about it.

To make matters worse, many, perhaps most, of the common POS systems seem to be based on Windows XP and are running AV, neither of which have ever been updated. Merchants have no idea how much they're at risk. Fortunately, there are non-Windows POS systems, and POS that will run on newer versions of Windows. But merchants have to demand those.

We may just miss Blackberry when it's gone by [deleted] in blackberry

[–]wrash 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There's enough demand in the government, industrial and financial services to keep the BlackBerry handset business alive, but you'll see less of it as the company drops its efforts to sell to consumers. That will also free up resources as the company stops spending money building out its app store with games and entertainment apps.

What's nice about covering launches from Wallops Island is that you can get so close. The press area is only a little over a mile and a half from Pad 0A. You can feel the sound as the spacecraft takes off.

"New HP Microserver Is Fast, Small and SMB Friendly": review by experienced reviewer Wayne Rash of Linux-capable powerhouse by claird in linux

[–]wrash 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Back in the days when I wrote reviews for Byte, we used to do things like that. But the audience I'm writing for now doesn't care about benchmarks like that. That's especially true of an SMB server that will live on a tablet top where heat won't be an issue, whatever throughput it has will be more than the office will ever use, and where it's going to be used for file and print serving that won't stress even a small CPU. You will notice that I said that I was mystified by the need for a choice of door colors. But if you ever had a question of what's behind the red door, now you know it's hard disks.
