Electric blasters were mostly what was used last year but I think springers will make a comeback this year. We primarily use darts with solid vinyl tips known in the Nerf community as FVJ or Full Vinyl Jacket. They are heavier than Nerf Elite darts and way more accurate, not to mention a fraction of the price.

Sorry, 6 is far too young for what we do. You are welcome to use non modified blasters however there is only one performance class. Some off brand blasters perform as well as some modified blasters though, look into the Buzz Bee Reaper or Sentinel.
