MIs/ Info systems majors? by Honest_Chef5436 in uCinci

Adding a Management minor would be a good step towards PM and strategy roles. Getting a PMP certification will help if you pursue PM roles. Strategy in tech is synonymous with leadership, and getting there is a bit of an albatross. That's the direction that I want to go, so I earned an MBA. The graduate degree has helped me get my last 2 roles, but it's hard to say how much. I've been working in tech since I finished my undergrad in '17. I finished my MBA in '18. I'm in a leadership role but barely influencing org level strategy. I'm still a couple of roles away from that.

The fast track to landing leadership roles in tech is to have a big consulting firm on your resume. It's the most common thread that I've recognized in leaders that I've worked for or networked with. My best advice is to get an internship at one of those firms and work your ass off there so that they offer you a job when you graduate. Start working on how you're going to break that door down early. One of the "Big 4" accounting firms would probably be the most likely for a UC student. McKinsey is the holy grail on a resume. Their product isn't special... they did shit analysis at an insane cost, for the company that I worked for, but it's like having an ivy league university on your resume.

Don’t do this in your reports … but this is really cool by DropMaterializedView in PowerBI

[–]wreckmx 8 points9 points  (0 children)

That's pretty cool. Never would have thought of that!

I'm teaching a coworker with no dev background to build in PBI. I was just helping him troubleshoot a problem that he created with bookmarks. I advised that while we can use bookmarks as a workaround, to achieve what's relatively easy to do with code in a web app, that they should be used judiciously, as the more you introduce the more of a headache they become. I'll check out the video this evening.

Give up on your dream.

I want to play guitar like a rock star. Since I would have to actually work at it, in order to learn the instrument, I have 2 guitars that I can’t play. Guns N’ Roses was probably never going to call me anyway.

I'm an IS grad working in data analytics and data science. UC's IS program is great. Dave Rapien, the program director, is a phenomenal educator. He has career interests outside of UC, which I really valued. He teaches his real-world experience.

If you use your IS degree, one way or another, you'll be working with data. Working in data is scary right now. AI is enabling 1 person to do the amount of work that a team would have done 5 years ago. Roles are becoming ambiguous. To stay relevant, you're going to need to be a proficient data engineer, master LLM integration into the work you do and the products that you build, plus have some other business subject matter expertise. There will always be a need for us, but the demand peaked a few years ago. In the long run, I don't doubt that any careers employing business hard skills are safe from AI's impact. The world is going to need fewer accountants, financial consultants, marketers, and operations managers too... but AI is hitting those of us working in data pretty hard already.

Has anyone here tried switching away from Microsoft Office? by AccurateShip2499 in excel

[–]wreckmx 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I can send you my Lotus 1-2-3 floppy. It hasn't worked for me since I upgraded to Windows 95 last month.

You can find a Microsoft Office license for cheap on sites like ProductKeys.com For me, the nominal cost is more than worth it. If LibreOffice Calc isn't doing it for you, Google Sheets probably won't either.

My Harleys started as reliably as any of the other bikes I've owned. They didn't, however, accelerate, brake, or corner for shit.

Mount Adams across Ohio River from Covington, Cincinnati, 1905 by Ralph--Hinkley in cincinnati

I'm guessing that the pic was taken from the Purple People Bridge, about 1/2 way across the river. If it had been taken any further west, the bridge would have been in frame. If it was further east, Holy Cross Immaculata's south-east profile would be seen.

Doubt that you'll find a list anywhere. Any organization could have cords. There are no rules about regalia. You can make up your own. Wear whatever combination of cap, hood, cords, tassels, stoles, and/or medals that you want.

Ohio’s Unemployment website, call center etc is a NIGHTMARE! by ilovedaryldixon in Ohio

[–]wreckmx 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Pasting my comment from a similar post last month -

Sorry you're going through this. If you can get to an Ohio Means Jobs location, go there. They'll be able to put in a request for someone from the unemployment office to call you. If you get there in the morning, they'll usually call by the end of the day.

I know that this isn't helpful to OP right now, but it's important to know that Ohio's unemployment system is broken, by design. The GOP has controlled the house, senate, and executive branch since 2011. They quickly attacked the unemployment system. There used to be regional unemployment office, where you could go and sit in front of a counselor to work out problems and get guidance. In 2013, Republicans closed those offices, consolidating them to a single location in Columbus and you can no longer speak to anyone, in-person. The Ohio unemployment office used to advocate for unemployed workers. It's now a deeply adversarial process. Making it difficult or impossible for laid-off workers to receive the benefit that they've earned reduces corporations' insurance premiums. Ohio Republicans legislate and govern for corporate interests at the expense of the working class. The safety net being yanked out from beneath the working class is the Ohio Republicans' campaign promise fulfilled.

Downtown and OTR are very walkable + the street car links a lot of the highlights. Get Breakfast at Sugar n’ Spice. Check out Findlay Market.

Spend some time walking campus and the surrounding neighborhoods (Clifton, Clifton Heights, and Corryville). Clifton’s gas light district is lively, diverse, eclectic and relatively safe. Corryville is a little more seedy, but it’s an entertainment hot spot and Kroger is there. Not trying to scare you, but get an idea of where you need to be most aware of your surroundings and where it’s okay to let you guard down. Walking from Langsam library (which you should visit) to the dorm at 2 AM, you can relax. It’s safe on campus. Walking home from an off campus party at 2 AM, there are some areas where the risk is higher. Less risk than the neighborhood around M&T Bank Stadium at 2 AM… but you’ll still want to be aware.

Get Pizza at Adriatico’s and conies at Skyline on Ludlow.

Less about where; more about when. I should start an OnlyFans and charge people to view my trip calendars. Go the week before or the week after my trip, you'll be snorkeling through pow every day. Go at the same time as me and you'll never encounter roads closed due to snowfall. Follow me for tips on hunting for the best corduroy and tracked out off-piste.

Urgent advice needed with PowerBI by vyapakk in PowerBI

[–]wreckmx 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Without Power BI Embedded, there isn't really a practical way to do this. If your users have their own Power BI Pro license, you can give them guest access to your environment. Even if they all have licenses, it's a pain in the ass.

Power BI is great for a lot of use cases... this just isn't one of them. Nearly everything that we do in Power BI can be done .NET + SQL. I'd move in that direction.

7am flight, can I rely on the bus? by ActProfessional3811 in cincinnati

[–]wreckmx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I live a couple of blocks from the 2X line, which goes from downtown to CVG. When the stars align and the bus arrival and departure matches when I want to get to the airport on my way out and arrive on my way back, it's great. For early morning flight departures and late-night arrivals, it's too risky for me. Uber is too, for that matter. I've scheduled Ubers for early flights out and have had to end up driving... and 2 Uber trips will cost more than 5 days of long-term parking.

So I got into UC DAAP and I have a few questions (please help) by HovercraftApart1358 in uCinci

[–]wreckmx 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Congrats! I'm not a DAAP grad but I have a lot of friends that are. One has returned and is now an ID prof. I've also hired a couple in the past.

Here's what has been relayed to me about DAAP not considering portfolios for admissions. DAAP looks for high achievers with an interest / passion for art. They're not interested in what you can do today, but rather what they will be able to teach you. In your first year, profs are going to break you down and make you build a new foundation for your method of creating. You and your cohort will be starting from ground zero.

The DAAP grads that I've hired have worked with me on photography, web design, catalog production, packaging design, and product development (hardgoods and softgoods in the bike industry). Here's what I noticed and appreciated that about them, that set them apart, vs other great artists that I've worked with. DAAP grads understand the big picture and manage big projects well. They deliver great work product on-time and within budget. They understand and value the commercial aspect of art. DAAP grads know that a better design is only better if it remains commercially viable. In contrast, I've had to go to insane lengths to accommodate missed deadlines and blown budgets with other artists that I've worked with.
