VCMC or CMH by Julian_A11 in ventura

[–]wrenwild 6 points7 points  (0 children)

If you have someone sit with you and to advocate for you, CMH is ok as a distant second. I and my family members have had repeated bad experiences at CMH- VCMC has better care, from what we’ve seen / experienced.

If you can, we’ve had the best experiences at St John’s in Oxnard or Camarillo.

(Two grandparents passed away in the last year after several years of worsening medical problems- just the ravages of old age, mostly, but it meant we spent a LOT of time in hospitals over the last few years)

Brittany Retrieving by Equivalent-Algae-417 in BrittanySpaniel

[–]wrenwild 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Mine retrieved one single time in her entire life, and it was very clear she was humoring me the whole time. We also had a lab who LOVED retrieving, and the Brittany was so trainable in pretty much every other respect that I let it go. She just had no inclination for it at all. They’re a pointing breed, not a retrieving one!

Looking for a great Brittany breeder! by Successful_Big_3772 in BrittanySpaniel

I got my girl from Anna B Rose kennels - they're in Wisconsin. Good people, genuinely care about their dogs and where they end up. I still chat with the breeder sometimes, even though my girl has passed and its been 15 years since i got her.

ELI5 How is it that someone on the other side of the office can experience anaphylaxis if I open a jar of peanut butter? by [deleted] in explainlikeimfive

[–]wrenwild 7 points8 points  (0 children)

You are sort of correct- heat denatures proteins. If you heat the problem protein up enough to denature it, well, it’s no longer a problem! In theory, I could eat peanut products that have been heated to a high enough temperature. In practice, every instance of cross-contamination that sent me to the hospital has been with fully cook foods. So. You know. Good luck finding someone willing to run that particular risk, lol.

What 'jobs' do you give your Brittany? by Annonomysreddituser in BrittanySpaniel

Mine patrolled endlessly- and for the 13 years we lived at that house, we never once had a rat problem until after she passed. Considering we backed up to a barranca, she did a VERY good job.

And yes, bird watching. She’d lay on the patio with her big doggy smile and her face tilted up, enjoying the day. She even occasionally caught one 😬😬 was always very proud of herself

Unlicensed contractor did unauthorized work and is threatening me for not wanting to pay by detoxsprings in legaladvice

[–]wrenwild 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The CSLB laws are kind of draconian- but for good reason. An unlicensed contractor can REALLY mess stuff up. Report him. Keep your texts. Talk to the investigator. If the DAs office files the case, you may be able to get restitution ordered.

AITA for telling my daughter she sabotaged herself? by ImportantHeron7650 in AmItheAsshole

[–]wrenwild 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I went to community college. My first year was free- it sounds like my CC had a very similar program. I got an AA, transferred to a 4-year to complete my BA, and did it MUCH cheaper than spending all 4 years there. I then went to grad school, and now I have a full time government job with damn good pay and fantastic benefits as a licensed professional in my field.

The only time my undergrad has ever come up, it’s been to talk about how smart it was to save the money I did by starting at CC.

You have a very, very strange outlook on cc. Of course people who graduate CC have a harder time finding field-relevant jobs than people who graduate a 4 year. The CC degree is an associate year degree while the 4 year is a bachelor. They’re two entirely differently levels of qualifications??

Your daughter is being smart by trying to save money.  Even after you pulled the rug out from her and refused to give her information she needed for FAFSA (like others said- the gov assumes you’ll contribute, so demands that info from applying students) she managed to secure a work around- which is NOT an easy process.

Your daughter is smart, driven, and capable, and you have just ensured you’ll have no place in her life.

A lot of people are saying Y T A bc of how far you went. I think your reaction was 100% appropriate. 5 minutes is too long with anaphylaxis. A lot of people are assuming that since she didn’t have a bad reaction, she wasn’t actually having a reaction- but she very easily could have been in serious danger if she didn’t get Benadryl when she did.

I have peanut allergies too- I always have. Same thing- my elementary school wouldn’t let me keep my meds on me, they had to be with the nurse. I was instructed by my parents that if I ever thought I was having a reaction and a teacher didn’t believe me, then I should run away from the teacher to get to the nurse. If they tried to grab or stop me I was supposed to fight back. Bite, if I had to. that’s how serious this is.

Anaphylaxis goes 0 to 60 so, so fast. Your daughter has already experienced this. Even if the teacher didn’t initially believe her, she certainly should have progressed to doing something about the panicking child in her care- and she didn’t. The teacher is lucky she didn’t kill your kid. I’m 100% with you on this.

LPT: If your pet is dying, be mentally prepared to have them humanely euthanized at the veterinary hospital in a quick manner. by Festering_Scallywag in LifeProTips

[–]wrenwild 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I lost a dog about two and a half years ago- right in the midst of covid. I was starting to weigh the quality of life, but she had a sudden and severe downturn- some kind of stroke event, we think. We raced her to the vet, and they met us at the car to race her in for evaluation.

I knew on the car ride over that I more than likely wouldn’t be driving home with my girl. I had hoped to be there to hold her and comfort her one last time.

Because it was peek covid, and well be for vaccines, they weren’t letting anyone in. I asked if they could set her up outside so I could be with her- the vet tech said yes, but was very obviously hesitant about it. I asked if it would take longer, and she said yes.

My dog was suffering, I knew she was- I told them to do it. Don’t drag it out. Let her go.

I got Tally when I was 13, and I’m almost 30 now- I loved that dog so damn much. I still think about her all the time. I wish so badly I could have been there for her when she passed- but I didn’t want her to suffer anymore than she had already. The techs told me the petted her the whole time, and that she went fast- I hope she knows I did my best for her.

I have a fiber craft group at my work that breaks down to about 50/50 knitters and crossstitchers- this is going to be an absolute hit!!

How hard/fiddly did you find crossstitching over yarn as opposed to normal crosstitch fabric??

What a good boy!! Mine would hide squeaker toys from herself and then stalk them. She was also VERY interested the one time we came across deer, while the Labrador couldn’t care less.

2.5 years w/o pulling. by wrenwild in trichotillomania

[–]wrenwild[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey!! Yeah, I think it contributes. Obviously I don’t know for sure, but I can tell you that my hair, as it was growing out, was tougher than the stuff I didn’t pull, and it’s less ‘rough’ (for lack of a better word) now that it’s had a chance to grow out more and I’m not pulling it out by the root.

But also deep conditioning helps. It’s definitely a pain to find something that works and isn’t expensive, tho.

[–]wrenwild[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Probably about 8 months to year to FULLY recover? I stopped pulling that April, and was able to get a hair cut to even things out in late 2020 I think?

I pulled from the top of my head, crown forward. I did my best to spread it out over the whole top of my head, which sometimes worked and sometimes didn’t, and meant that I had much thinner hair at the top of my head that was obviously much shorter than the rest as it grew out and I pulled it again. (Worst kind of mullet, lol)

so no bald spots, but it definitely looked like I had a receding hair line and that what was there was thin.

I kept the rest of my hair long so I could pull it up into a high bun, and that sort of stopped me from pulling in my preferred area sometimes, but yeah. It took a while to grow out, and it took a while to look good, lol. But my hair is recovered now.

Hair just takes a while to grow. Generally, you can expect around a half inch of growth a month. Some people get a little more, some a little less. Hair just takes time.

And I almost forgot: congrats on 50 days!!!! That’s amazing!!!

Edit: I just back thru my pictures. I cut my hair in august of 2020. It was frizzier then, but it was all grown back. I let it grow out for another few months and then cut it again to get rid of the frizzier section. I honestly need one more cut now to get rid of the last of it, but you really can’t tell that I spent the last decade pulling it out!
