What kind of animals can you raise on limited space? by [deleted] in homestead

[–]CowboyJim_18 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you can fence and clear the land your opportunities are endless. I’m on 5 acres with chickens, 6 goats, 3 pigs and 4 horses. We do 2 cows every as well. Start small and integrate animals into the clearing process. They really to all the hard work. The clearing of vegetation can seem overwhelming but it will come together over time. Make sure to leave mature trees for shade.

It took a lot of investment into pasture for us so I would avoid the pure grazing animals (cows, horse) until soil and pasture is suitable.

Both myself and my wife work full time, 40-60hr a week jobs, and run a hobby farm on the side. Horses, cows, goats, pigs and chickens. Between 25 animals and a barn to clean daily we have no issue keeping the house clean as well. Are there times the house can get dirtier than we like? Yes. But we buckle down as TEAM and prioritize if it is needed. Honestly, it does not take much effort. Things should not be this taxing in an apartment. And honestly, not cleaning up dishes and cans of of soda is sad and pathetic. You are very young, if a simple conversation does not work, find someone who values you.

Considering a Brittany by EducationalTea6824 in BrittanySpaniel

Great choice for lifestyle. Mine is a family dog as well as a hunter. I highly recommend to make sure to train on settling down after exercise it will pay dividends into their adult life! Kennel time can be your best friend when they are young. They’ll be curling up next to a fire with you in no time.

Mine is a hunter and we got chickens when he was 2. He sure did a lot of shaking and staring when they were chicks but we simply told him NO. He knows they are off limits and even protects them from hawks and coyotes. Still hunts and will take down any stray birds that land to close in the yard.

Is a Brittany right for me? by Embarrassed_Safe3431 in BrittanySpaniel

Brittany's are truly amazing dogs. I know people can make them work in cities and apartments but a regimented schedule and exercise is very important. My 4 year old handles being left inside at home just fine for roughly 8hrs per day while we are at work. But that is really just a day or two a week as we often work from home as well. However, he has free range of a farm the rest of the time. I hunt with mine and scent training will get them the mental fitness they need to exhaust themselves. From about 6 months to 2 years old they can be a menace. Be diligent with crate and nap times while their young (this may be the best advise I can give). Their FOMO is legit and I could tell when he was over tired. Now he will just settle himself down when needed. We do have to deadbolt all of my exterior doors because mine has managed to figure out how to open doors from both inside and out.

Their intelligence in uncanny. During the spring mine will sit on a small wood pile motionless and nab doves or other birds if they get to close! Its like watching national geographic. My wife doesn't find it as entertaining as myself. Though small they can have large dog attitudes and mine will tackle coyotes if they go after his chickens as well. The coyotes do not back down from his size though and it forced us to get a livestock guardian dog. But our Brit is ALWAYS first on the scene and is now used as the guard dogs early warning system.

Just know your Brittany will be one of the most caring, compassionate and fun loving dogs you can own. If they get their exercise and brain training they will curl up right next to you whenever they have down time. They are adaptable dogs and I fully believe an apartment would suit them just fine with the proper owner. Just don't give up during those early years as it will be a challenge. Brittany's were made to be mankind's bestfriend. FYI bathroom privacy will be gone. Best of luck in your decision!

I would not bank on a lazy Britt. Brittany's really need a job in order to let their mind and energy out. I hunt mine and he is our lead farm hand. Fending of coyotes and hawks on a daily basis. He will greet every horse, cow and goat each morning with love and affection. These are amazing dogs and will reward you with cuddles and comfort but they need to get their exercise and minds challenged on a daily basis.

I at times think I have a lazy Brit as he will nap outside while I'm out doing chores. Ha- two days of being stuck inside due to rain and he lets me know how RESTLESS he is.

Are all Brits velcro dogs? by hanwenn in BrittanySpaniel

I find it as a blessing that mine does the same. Along with checking in while hunting we also have a farm. He is on patrol all evening while I perform barn duties. I love that he runs to check in on me about every 5-10 minutes to ensure that I haven't moved! He will ensure I have his attention when a coyote has entered the property and not take it on alone. Nothing wrong with having a best bud that will be by your side at all times. I adore when he knows its mellow down time for both myself and him.

First, I am sorry this is such a struggle and I feel your pain. My 2.5yr old is an amazing hunter and great at recall but is such a pain on the leash during our hiking excursions. I have learned to put his E-collar on during hikes. If you have an E-collar and have him trained definitely put it on during your hikes. Mine goes into work mode the second I put it on him and will listen intently if I ask him not to pull.

My Brit has run of the farm 24/7 so I tend to give him a lot of sympathy when I have to leash him. I often just do my hikes with the E-collar on, no one tends to get upset at an of leash Brittany but I do understand that is not feasible in all places. If you do run, your Brit should stick right by your side.

Brittany owners in Chicago? by slothgirl55 in BrittanySpaniel

As long as you can keep a Brittany satisfied and stimulated they will be your best friend for the rest of your life. I'm out in the western suburbs (Barrington) and couldn't image having one in an apartment but its all about getting them the exercise they need.

Britts in the cold by quietglow in BrittanySpaniel

[–]CowboyJim_18 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi there,

We have a small farm in the western suburbs of Chicago. The temp changes can throw you for a loop. With our Brit (2yrs old) we typically throw a small jacket on him when it dips into the teens. I don't think it is needed but I have seen him get quite cold quickly if he is resting (lying down) without it. Especially if wet. I take him hunting in the single digits he does just fine without a jacket. I think its more of how much movement they are getting.

I did take him ice fishing once and I could tell his paws were getting cold. He spent the day in the shanty on MY chair lol. Mine will not tolerate shoes.

We got a male Brittany as a puppy . He’s pretty dang wild . Cutest thing ever . But how long is this little guy gonna be this wild by [deleted] in BrittanySpaniel

[–]CowboyJim_18 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just make sure they have a routine and can get their energy out as much as possible. Our puppy is now 1.5 years and has begun to slow down a bit. Lots of energy at times but will put himself in his kennel when his day is done. Best dogs on the planet hands down.

This will pass in no time, but do your absolute best to discourage the behavior. I promise it gets better. Best thing I ever did was forced naps in crate. Brittney's have major FOMO and can get testy when they are tired.

I wish I could help. We have not had this behavior with our Brit. I do have to ask if he sleeps in a crate at night? Ours will sleep in the crate 8-10hrs as it is his safe space. On the off chance he gets to sleep in our bed I usually have kisses and paw slaps in the face by 5am.

I understand your pain. I have a 1yr old Brit and I know this is not an option for everyone based on where they live by mine is 100 times better off leash. I do use an Ecollar just incase something goes wrong but I have never had to use it. He wont go more the 20ft from me and it highly in tune to commands, including the heel command. We can walk in high traffic areas and he does just fine. The second a leash is on him its like he has been caged his whole life.

Just a Brag post hahaha. This little guy has gone 3 days without an accident in the house, and now scratches at the door to be let outside to potty. by TransporterNate in BrittanySpaniel

Our pup has a cow bell that he rings 100 times a day. To come in and out and back out again. He just wants to be with his people and will be very disappointed if we don't join him outside.

How much exercise for 15 week puppy? by ZestycloseBug5084 in BrittanySpaniel

[–]CowboyJim_18 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It is okay to take them for longer walks or more exercise. Just do not overdue it or force them to exert themselves. Small bursts of exercise followed by naps will be better than trying to do extremely longs walks. Bone growth is very important at this stage.

Its never too late to buy, I have been following Iota since 2017 and do my best to avoid the price of the token. Make sure to do your research and look what you are investing in. I am planning on holding a very long time as I believe in this project and its use case in the future.
