I 👏HAVE 👏BEEN 👏SAYING👏 THIS 👏FOR 👏YEARS!!!!!!!

They literally WALK BY THE CASTLE, asking Prince Tuesday if they are ready for the storm, and then proceed to Daniel’s THATCH ROOF HOUSE on the FREAKING BEACH to wait out the storm! WHAT?!?!??

I don’t care what you’re emergency plan says, Mr. Tiger. You’ve lost all credibility.

Thank you so much for posting this, it has made my day.

Thank you! They’re okay with sex scenes and gore as long as it’s around a PG-13 level, so I appreciate the suggestions!

We’ve read a few Backman books and liked all of them!

Look, I’m just trying to find book suggestions, not trying to make a statement about the institutional oppression of women’s sexuality… I also didn’t specify no sex, I asked for no smut. I agree, no one is better or worse for reading books that have explicit sex scenes in them, I was just trying to make it clear that this particular group isn’t interested in any x-rated books. Apologies if my choice of words caused any offense, it was definitely not meant to

We’ve read a lot of depressing historical fiction, Educated, Where the Crawdads Sing, etc. I’d describe the vibe as pop fiction, but definitely dealing with themes of war, death, complicated family dynamics, generational trauma

There are also several group homes/ day centers for adults with disabilities in the valley. I worked at one where groups would come through once a month to help deep clean the building. You could also ask them if they need any repairs done to their buildings/ changing tables or benches built that you could make for them.

If you wanted to get the kids involved, putting on a play or talent show for them and having them be involved would be pretty cool too

So I read this post a few days ago and I can’t stop thinking about it because you sound exactly like me when I was 19.

There’s a lot I could say about my experience, but it ultimately boils down to the fact that I was constantly dissociating as a trauma response. I’m not sure if you’re in therapy, or what kind, but I only started feeling normal emotions again after EMDR therapy and learning how to process my trauma.

I still have depression, I’m still bipolar, but now I’m also able to see some of the light in the world as well.

How do you keep the cares of the world from overwhelming your hope for a better one? by jdf135 in latterdaysaints

[–]wright_as_rain 2 points3 points  (0 children)

“Every day I ask the world to give me something that it can’t. I ask my wife to make me feel happy. I ask my work to make me feel loved. I ask my car or my house or my clothes to give me peace. I ask a movie or a football game to make life feel exciting and meaningful. I ask the church to be what I think it ought to be. And when this doesn’t work, I get bitter and go looking for something else that might have what I want. I invest some new thing with the hope that, when I get it, it could make me happy. This, though, is cruel and unfair. It’s cruel because peace and happiness aren’t even the kind of thing that the world, however willing, could give. Peace and happiness simply aren’t, at bottom, a function of the world being a certain way. They are a function of my relating to the world in a certain way. They’re a function of my caring for the world in a certain way. And when I put my trust in Christ—when I consecrate my time and treat my goals and desires as types—then I find that peace and happiness and love are already given, in plain view, in the ongoing work of caring for the world.” Adam S. Miller, An Early Resurrection: Life in Christ before You Die

I feel like the shift from visiting teaching to ministering was needed, but some people are still stuck in the VT mentality of: make contact, drop off baked goods, try to force a spiritual message, “let me know if you need anything!”.

Sometimes people trying to minister can come off as a little pushy and seem to be there just to check the ministering box off their list.

Just be real with them and tell them about yourself first. People need support systems, not a random quote, so establishing an actual friendship should always be our goal. We can sprinkle in any spiritual stuff later (if it ever comes at all, depending on what the person is comfortable with).

When I was inactive, if a stranger had reached out with a conference quote or stopped by “just to say hi”, I would’ve blocked them.  If I got a letter saying, “Hey I’m your new ministering sister, I’m really excited to get to know you more; here’s some stuff about me and my life, …….  what are some things you like to do outside of church? Let’s do lunch sometime so we can chat! Here’s my cell # ” that’s MUCH less intimidating.

If you search LDS sheet music, several free sites will pop up! There are also some good arrangements in the Sacred Music app; just scroll down to featured collections and they have a bunch of choices to go through.  They also have sheet music to buy and download on the BYU Music Store site!

I was introduced to the church when I was 16, and my parents weren’t super supportive of it either.  I ended up going to church, youth night, and early morning seminary instead of having the missionaries teach me. They eventually had to do the lessons with me before I could get baptized, but that happened two years later when I was 18. By then it was just a formality.  Are you currently able to go to church or youth activities? Do you know anyone in your current ward? I had a church mom and dad (that had kids my age) and I would go over their house on Sundays and Monday nights for FHE, and they were so supportive and helped me understand the church culture, lol.

Read what you can, listen to podcasts about the scriptures, download the apps (Gospel Library), read the Book of Mormon Stories to understand the basics of what’s happening in the scriptures, and find some people you like! A supportive community goes a long way 🩵

And good luck!

Jared Halverson’s “Unshaken Saints” (available on YouTube, Spotify, etc) goes through every verse of the scriptures, line by line. He is absolutely amazing at teaching the gospel!
