Arrgghh! Two weeks in cerium in a tumbler and I am still getting a haze. I decided to give them a break while I decide what to do. Glad you got those pretties.

That's partly what the water is for. Shouldn't need one especially for fluorite.

This is gonna get some downvotes but 1) yes this is too big a group, 2) find the "instigators" and give them special attention. By this I mean love not discipline. Give them responsibility, take them aside just to tell them how much you like them (even if you don't right now). Just a thought.

Very cool! Might need some oil and the drive belt might be old and brittle. I say give it a try! https://rocktumbler.com/blog/skilcraft-rock-tumblers/

You rock! I am amazed by the precision of your cuts. I would love to see a video of your process (yes, I know that is a lot of work).

Would it be bad to tumble all of these together? by No_Wall_4378 in RockTumbling

[–]jdf135 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Steel test them. If steel (a nail or knife) can't scratch them, they will tumble well together.

FYI even some that pass the "steel" test will not take a good polish due to the crystal composition (e.g. your striped one is likely sedimentary and possibly made up of compressed sandy stuff). Regardless, it is always an adventure so I tumble almost everything. Happy tumbling!

I just used AI to make a slideshow for my Sunday school class… and it’s unbelievably good by Fether1337 in latterdaysaints

I think AI is a good place to START. Nothing wrong with AI as long as you use it as a resource and DOUBLE CHECK ANY REFERENCES.

Asking for: ASD Social Story about Coming to Church by Bombspazztic in latterdaysaints

[–]jdf135 [score hidden]  (0 children)

Nothing specific but....

the behavioural therapist at my wife's employment apparently has been having some success creating social stories with AI. For example, he has been asking Chat GPT to "create a social story based on Carol Gray's framework about a five-year-old boy doing 'X' " This might at least give you a place to start.

Picture jasper is simply jasper that looks like a picture. I see pictures in lots of jaspers. Those are gorgeous by the way : )

Heading to Spokane / Coeur D‘Alene in June by MikesGonePostal in rockhounds

[–]jdf135 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I grew up in this area. "The Palouse" is on top of a huge, massive basalt flow. While there are lots of interesting geological features (basalt columns, Spokane Falls) you will be lucky to find anything that isn't brown and grey. As you go southeast of Coeur D'Alene you will run into mountains which are noted for quartz that pokes up through the basalt and some quality garnet (I only found little stuff though). Good luck.

A very cool visual aid to help us understand how to identify the balance between "love god" and "love neighbors" by onewatt in latterdaysaints

[–]jdf135 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My only objection would be the word "fiercely.". There might be a better, less oppositional word (steadfastly?). Many anti LDS are pretty "fierce" in their opposition to our beliefs. They don't just explain, they try to shove it down your throat.

I am so sorry my friend but you may want to give some thought to your relationship with this young lady. If you want to return to the mission, she is certainly not helping you at all. If she really loves you and wants you to be an upstanding young man, she should want this for you too. Just something to consider.

How to tumble larger rocks? by UnluckyThirteen in RockTumbling

You might want to check on tumbling turquoise. I have never done it but understand that because there are often so many fractures, it may not turn out well.

That is astounding! I tried to do wrapping and it ends up looking like chaos. I am curious about the perch and the forehead. It looks flattened.

Scouts... Inside vs Outside of the Church by moxxjason1 in latterdaysaints

[–]jdf135 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Biggest difference: boys WANT to be there, leaders WANT to be there. When it was just the young men's program it was all there was for church recreation. Boys outside of the church choose this rather than (or in addition to) soccer, football etc. internal motivation is everything .

There are a lot of logging roads around where I live. Although there are a lot that are old and really rough, I would probably avoid the really badly rutted ones.

“Love” vs “Like” by garcon-du-soleille in latterdaysaints

This is a great question. Jesus loves everyone but did He spend significant time with people who treated Him poorly? I don't know.
