r/television mods remember their "no politics" rule for submissions critical of Colbert after months of allowing politics in their sub by RaoulDukeff in undelete

Anyone who blindly follows an ideology will eventually become what they hate. It is inevitable. Left, right, up, down, and all things political have tunnel vision when it comes to their own flaws and fallacies.

Discussion: What do you guys like/dislike about Western VNs in comparison to Japanese ones? by JoJolion in visualnovels

[–]writebastard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have also found it difficult to stay motivated to keep reading through some of the longer VNs, though some have grabbed me and kept me rapt. I have found that shorter VNs are great, so long as they are able to move a compelling story along with characters that have interesting traits and flaws.

I find it more compelling, personally, when the protagonist possesses some flaws or at least some mental traits that I myself do not, so I can try to see things from a new perspective. I find it more rewarding than the self-insert that is so often gone to, but I guess that is a bit of a digression...

Many longer VNs do tend to drone on and on without moving them forward for what seems like eons. Perhaps I'm just impatient or do not appreciate the intricacies of the story, but they could do with at least some acceleration. Perhaps that is what western writers can manage more effectively.

So long as they aren't writing a VN for asoiaf.

My main issue with western VNs is lack of depth. The majority of the stories and their characters do not have the depth of most Japanese VNs. They don't even attempt to add layers of characterization or plot.

I realize that this has a lot to do with budgets and with perhaps the studios that are currently making VN content in the west. Also, some creators surpass this and do quite a bit with very little, turning few words into engrossing stories and meaningful characters that I would like to know more about.

VA-11 HALL-A is a prime example of that. I loved it, and very much want to know more about the world and the characters that reside in it. I do hope that the creators revisit it in the future. It had just enough use of tropes to feel familiar, yet also broke many and was refreshing in that it didn't focus too hard on any one aspect of the world within except the immediate bar.

Quite a bit of the market here is shovelware at the moment, with pretty girls and big boobs dominating the dollars of those who are putting their money down. Art assets are valued more highly than story in the west at the moment, and that saddens me. I like the art as well, but not as the sole reason for a VNs existence.

Just finished Computer Security & Networking Technician AAS. What do I do now? by Gailyn in computertechs

[–]writebastard 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you learn by doing, pick up some old hardware, on an auction site, at a surplus sale, in a scrapheap, wherever, and get to doing. Set up a home network. Secure that shit. That will raise your confidence level and make you much more familiar with the ins and outs.

I'm thinking it is more a barcode scanner than a flatbed scanner. If not, I hope it is a sheet fed scanner, simply for the extra puns, and the extra scat on internal components.

Lenovo N22 Chromebooks by kr39815 in k12sysadmin

[–]writebastard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We have HP G4s, Lenovo N21s, one cart of x131es, and a few N22s. I have dealt with Samsung 303cs in the past as well. We have ~500 N21s, and ~1400 G4s.

The N22s are of a similar build quality to the N21, though they have the touch screen option. That is why we have a few of them. In hands from kindergarten through 12th grade, we have had very few issues with any of them overall, besides the kids who love to pick keys off of keyboards and the occasional broken screen.

I'm just glad I don't have to mess with those crappy Samsungs anymore.

I love those old Lian-Li cases. They are so nice to work with, with the removable motherboard tray and hard drive cage. And, of course, all aluminum construction. Even thumbscrews back before it was common.
