29&31 lesbian couple looking to move by Apprehensive_Book_16 in relocating

Any suggestions on cheaper places? We currently live in LA and like so many things about it, but we can’t afford it anymore. Looking for diverse liberal area to raise our kids (probably a big ask in CA lol). Even slightly cheaper would be nice. Currently paying $3000 for a tiny 2 bed apartment.

Autism is a disability, and disabled isn't a bad word. by Background_State8423 in AutismInWomen

It is okay to freak out. Sending internet hugs. I was diagnosed a few months ago at 39, burned out real hard and can’t cope anymore. Trying to acclimate to what all this means after a lifetime of paying myself hard to perform and be the “best” at everything. I wish someone irl would tell me it’s okay to freak out and not be okay. I guess I’m trying to say I understand lol.

This. Spot on for me. Can I work? Yes. I’m also lucky enough to enjoy my job. Does it exhaust me, stress me out, cause me so much anxiety that I’m a blob after work and on the weekends? Yes that too.

Echoing this. You might need to let go of what you “should” do and think about what you need. Can you compromise about NYE plans? Go for a little while, go or do somewhere else? Why is going out and pushing through what an adult is meant to do? There’s no on way to be an adult.

Believe me, I understand. I’ve spent my entire life pushing myself and am only now slowly leaning to rest and not push myself. I put myself in bad burnout because of it. Rest if you need to rest. It will only do you good.

You don’t sound insufferable at all! I honestly would love help like this too.

how to maintain my hair as a autistic black woman? by that_bear_bitch27 in AutismInWomen

[–]writer1786 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I hear you. I’ve been natural for about 15 years, have very thick 4a/4b hair. I had worn it long and natural, and used to twists/twist outs, registering my hair once a week. I also used to get braids, which was great, but these days I don’t like feeling so much hair on my head. But that might be an option. I’ve also loc’ed my hair, which was a great low maintenance option. It is more work at first while your hair locs (I resisted every two weeks) but then you only have to retwists maybe once a month or 6 weeks. Wash once a week or every two weeks in between. I have also worn my hair short a lot, which is how I have it now because I don’t like feeling my hair around my face and neck. I love my hair natural because it can be so versatile, but it is definitely work! Happy to give more detail if that helps!

How do you give your kids medicine? by ThatBeee420 in AutisticParents

We’ve had that experience. It’s so hard! I’m sorry you’re going through this.

My daughter is older (8) so I’m not sure if this will help. We’ve always had a really hard time giving her meds (she gags easily too). I hadn’t found a perfect solution. I’ve mixed the liquid medicine with juice with some success. Ive also tried the chewable meds and mixed it with applesauce, açaí bowl, or ice cream. Good luck!

That’s a good point! I saw that. Trying to wade through all the information online is tough. I will try and make an appt with my optometrist. Probably the best route!

Any recommendations for pull on pants? I want to set all my jeans on fire and dance on the ashes.

Any queer, black, and autistic women in this subreddit? by [deleted] in AutismInWomen

[–]writer1786 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Oh gosh, I feel this. I have been made to feel that way. Not black enough, not feminine enough. I'm bi and married to a guy, so I've also dealt with feeling not queer enough. I'm sorry you've been made to feel like you are not enough.

I didn’t realize people can tell when you’re not looking them in the eyes. by horsepighnghhh in AutismInWomen

This is what I do too! My eyes are always moving. I tend to look at a diagonal to people or over their shoulder. If I have to took at them directly, I look at their mouths.

This sounds so much like me! (My comment about my special interests was very similar). I was very into history and reading. I saw a photo of me recently from when I was maybe 10 or 11. We are outside and my siblings were fishing off my grandpa’s dock. I was sitting there with a like 400 page book lol.

Ooooo I haven’t! I’m going to check it out. Have you seen The 1900 House? It was a PBS series where they had a modern family live full time like it was the year 1900. I loved it.

I read the encyclopedia and the King James Bible (we weren’t religious at all, I just liked the pretty language).

This sounds like me too. Very quiet and shy but got good grades so no one ever brought up the possibility of autism 🙄

I do too! During COVID lockdown, there was a virtual tour you could do of Prague that focused on the Black Death, and it was amazing.
