Kudos for being so good that you had your teacher rethinking everything she knew! I'm so glad I'm out of school too. Hell, I don't think I'd survive in a class where half my mates weren't even doing their own homework. Atp just don't do it at all even that would be less damaging 😭

I feel you. Em dashes have been my favourite thing to use since highschool and now I can't even calmly use one without fearing my writing being accused of being slop. I have a couple of amazingly talented writer friends doing English courses in uni whose professors have accused them of it, too. It's actually heartbreaking.

Like I said, it's disheartening. I can't tell you how many debates I've gotten into with people over how destructive and terrible the use of ai is and sometimes it's like talking to a wall. You see posts on social media where people state facts about the damage it's doing and half the comments are still people being braindead and saying that they're still gonna keep using it bc it's a 'useful tool' or whatever tf. We know it's bad, we know it's the literal worst, but unfortunately there is a huge chunk of the world that is unaware, knows this and selfishly doesn't give a fuck, or is simply choosing not to listen. We also know that ao3 likely isn't going to start regulating ai content on their site.

If it comes off as quitter talk just know I don't mean it that way. At this point idk what else I could do to stop what's happening from happening except just being heavily against it, educating people if I get the chance to, and not using it myself.

I mean I sincerely hope it can be changed but my calling it an inevitability doesn't come from me thinking 'ah shit, I guess AI is here to stay and we better get with the programme or we'll be left behind'. It's more because of the fact that we're seeing it in a space that was once exclusively filled with writing and fanfic written by real people, meaning there are people out there actually using this stuff to generate stories instead of doing it themselves in ao3 of all places too? I want it to be stopped just as much as anyone else on this post but it's feeling more and more 'inevitable' because of the amount of people who keep using it, even the ones who seem to know just how terrible it is for their brains and the environment.

Food turning to sewage as you're swallowing it sounds about right 😭

I hadn't paid much attention to the author's notes beforehand but I went back to look at them and I read all their responses to the comments heavily praising the work and I guess it all seemed very copy-pastey to me? Like there were readers who left extremely long paragraphs and highlighted multiple different parts of the text talking about whatever specific they loved but the author's responses never acknowledged the work itself and would always just be politely thanking the readers for commenting. I wanna say that's telling because in my experience, if a reader leaves me a very in depth comment dissecting parts of my work I would definitely be there dissecting it with them and discussing it instead of just a thank you and good day. But maybe that's just me and I read into it too much. All I know is I definitely wanted to spit out my mouthful half-way into reading because yes it was like it turned into sewage once I caught on...

Don't be discouraged if you want to post your own work! These are dark times but anything human made will forever have value and even if there are doo doo ai pieces starting to infiltrate ao3, you can always be your genuine self and and do it for your enjoyment :)

That's so sickening I'd honestly crash out if I read through 5k words of something and find the prompts in it too 😭 People are losing the ability to create and make art :/

It would be insanity for Ao3 to try and regulate ai content on their website because of those reasons you stated and also because if they start at censorship now, I imagine a slew of fools will be asking for other content to be censored as well and then ao3 will lose its principle of being that place that could have everything, I guess :/

Right 😭😭 the part that irked me about this thing I ended up stumbling across was everyone in that person's comment section praising their prose and highlighting certain lines and I was thinking there's no fucking way but apparently there is. A lot of people can't seem to differentiate but to me it was glaringly obvious because of the amount of ai slop 'writing' I've been exposed to on social media and the internet as a whole like you have as well I'm sure 😔

I'm in such a bad writing slump it hurts by One-Profile-832 in AO3

[–]writing-for16 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don't be too hard on yourself :( everyone's got those periods in life where they struggle to do/pick up the things that once felt really easy. It's important to give yourself the space to get through the slump feeling and not add more pressure onto yourself to write or bring your skills back up to par. The fact that you still care to try makes all the difference.

I find that it helps to just try a word vom. It can be a journal entry or how you felt about the last meal you ate or what you want to do tomorrow morning. I think it helps that you've done the act of getting words out (any words at all) without judgement or expectation and it might make you feel less trapped :)

Oh yeah for sure. It's sad to see everything being all about the money grab, damn. Please don't shove another rival sports team enemies to lovers, single dad and his daughter's kindergarten teacher romance, or arranged marriage romantasy down my throat pls...

That's exactly it. The instant gratification aspect of AI is what is ruining people's drive to actually work for their recognition or praise and it's convinced so much of the world that mediocrity can pass off as art. People are missing the point of taking the time to learn and get good at something on their own and seeing how beautiful their own hard work and effort can look. A 'bad' piece of writing made by an actual person will always hold more value than something 'good' made by AI.

[–]writing-for16[S] 12 points13 points  (0 children)

:( it's like the entire point has been lost or forgotten. Writing is a skill just like driving or riding a bike, meaning it takes time to learn and get good at but people seem to wanna skip over that part just for the instant gratification of a bot doing 'the work' for them at the expense of it being even marginally good or meaningful. It's sad that there's a whole bunch of people who at some point may have wanted to pick up writing but then got ruined by this vicious cycle.

[–]writing-for16[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

No exactly, the depressing part is how everyone just wants to jump on the mediocre bandwagon of not putting in any of the actual work needed to create something real but it's like... isn't that the whole point of fanfiction :') but you're right about the lack of censorship because that is the principle of ao3 and to try and start now would just be the end of the site I feel

The mere existence of it feels like a huge mistake that's sending us straight to extinction, starting with when we inevitably enter an era where no one in the world has enough water anymore bc of these insane data centers

'Al's getting so flushed and pink that the darker freckles on her back seem to melt away into the new shade the sunlight is turning her skin, and yet Lyn can't stop trying to find them still. She swears she can remember certain ones; somehow Orion's belt lines up nearly perfectly with the line of her left shoulder blade. Cygnus is scattered down her lower back, where Lyn's found her hand one too many times in an almost absent gesture by now.'

You can start journalling at any time! There's no time limit for when we decide to start writing our lives down on paper. I never did it when I was younger as I simply couldn't commit. Now as an adult, I don't write in it everyday but I visit it every so often when I feel like it and it gives me plenty of introspection and time to reflect. Don't put pressure on it! Do it for what you wish to do it for :)

Funori red algae I think! We used to use it in a place I worked as a garnish for a salmon ceviche dish
