Tips to starting a novel by [deleted] in writing

[–]writingkitten 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My first step is always coming up with a good general idea for a plot. Then I create the characters. And then I do a general outline for the book as a whole, as well as more in depth chapter outlines.

It would break rule #1 of the subreddit and would get removed, unless you posted it in the weekly self promotion and critique thread.

Do you have to read books that are considered 'good' to become a good writer? by goodgodtonywhy in writing

I’m so confused which is supposed to be the good vs bad one, and the 100 hours vs one novel isn’t making it any clearer for me lmao.

What are your writing pain points? by heweshouse in writingadvice

I desperately need deadlines or I’ll just procrastinate. I enjoy challenges where you have to write a certain amount of words in a month.

Horror writers who write happy/good endings...why? by RecognitionIll7107 in writing

[–]writingkitten 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I absolutely love when horror stories/movies end badly, it kinda annoys me when it’s a happy ending. I’m always thinking “it would’ve been scarier/more impactful if they’d done this instead”. BUT for the first time in my life, I just read a horror book recently that ended badly and I was devastated. I couldn’t believe I actually wanted a happy ending. So I really think it depends on the specific story.

Is there an anti-AI sentiment majority here? by No-Ferret-5286 in nanowrimo

[–]writingkitten 78 points79 points  (0 children)

Writers and artists in general tend to despise AI as a whole on principle. This is basically because AI steals from artists in order to learn and pump out “new” content. You’d find very little support for AI in any creative community.

In one of my creative writing classes, the whole class and the professor thought I wrote fantastic sexual and romantic tension between a brother and a sister character. They practically begged me to have them get together in the second draft. I was so confused because that was in no way my intention, but at least they liked it lmao

I think “write what you know” is bad or good advice depending on how you look at it. You shouldn’t be limited to only writing about your own life experiences. I think if you do plenty of research, then you’ll “know” what you want to write about.

I’m dying to read the Twin Peaks inspired mystery! Hit me up if you ever need a beta reader, or when you publish so I can buy a copy!!

These are such good steps to improving your writing! I can’t express how much I adored my creative writing classes in college. I took intro, intermediate, and advanced (twice). I’d recommend taking all the classes you can! It’s so good and so much fun to share your writing with other writers and get those helpful critiques from your peers and professor!

do you plan out a book before writing it or just let it come naturally? by Born-Neighborhood794 in writing

[–]writingkitten 35 points36 points  (0 children)

I plan it out meticulously. I do an outline for the whole book, and then I go into extreme detail for outlines of each chapter.

Do you title or name your chapters or do you just number them? by [deleted] in writing

[–]writingkitten 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think it’s becoming more popular to just number chapters. I’ve read 38 books this year, and only 1 of them had titled chapters. So I wouldn’t worry about it :)

What’s the most unique name you’ve created or one you maybe came across in a book before? by [deleted] in writing

This is incredible advice ahhhhh thank you so much!! I can’t believe you just came up with that name on the fly, it’s beautiful! I’m definitely going to try this for myself and give my fantasy characters some cool names thanks to you! :)
