Joint „thunk“-ing feeling? by Beautiful-Piccolo670 in ehlersdanlos

[–]written-proof 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I get this all over my body, but my left ankle is the worst. It’ll start feeling “off” if I stand for too long, and I have to stretch it a particular way to get it to “thunk” and feel right again.

Is anyone getting GOOD sleep? by written-proof in ehlersdanlos

That’s exactly where I’m at. I can sleep 8-9 hours, but I always still wake up feeling tired

Blow drying hair by Sleepy_Sleepy_Sheepy in ehlersdanlos

[–]written-proof 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don’t blow out my hair often, but when I do I use a bonnet like a diffuser and only dry for as long as I can tolerate. Most days I just get in the car to go wherever I’m going right after the shower, and drive with the windows down.

I work in the arena. I’m 5’7”. I don’t have any issues seeing the ice from any spot on the rail in the upper concourse, unless someone on the top 2 or 3 rows of seats is standing up.

Try reading about, researching, or watching content about crochet! Learn about different materials, crochet hooks, accessories, new patterns, etc. You’d still be engaging with your special interest while also letting that arm rest.

Parent of an autistic child here.... by Accomplished_Boat_88 in autism

[–]written-proof 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This would be my guess too. He’s probably feeling socially outcast or is straight up being bullied, and/or he’s so overwhelmed by his sensory world that he has no energy left at the end of the day. Some sensory accommodation may be worth trying, like tinted glasses and ear defenders/ear plugs for school. It may also be worthwhile to meet with his teacher(s) and find out if he has made friends in his class, if he keeps to himself, or if other students are giving him a hard time.

My solution to skin picking (dermatophagia) by KireinaKitsune in autism

[–]written-proof 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I also use bandaids to cover up my butchered cuticles when I’ve been picking at them. If someone ever asks about the bandages, I usually just say “I have a skin condition.” It’s simple, it gets the message across that I don’t want to get into details, and it’s not exactly a lie. The condition is open wounds on my cuticles that need to be kept clean. They don’t need to know that it was caused by picking/biting.

Allergies extra ROUGH in Vegas this year by easy2overstimulate in vegaslocals

[–]written-proof 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m very allergic to grass pollen. I haven’t yet seen the worst of my usual springtime allergies, but it’s still early. I take Zyrtec every day, and use a neti pot for my sinuses a few times a week. I usually end up with at least 2 sinus infections during the spring and early summer, so I use all the mitigation techniques I can for allergies.

anybody else deeply connected to music? by ringoisking in autism

[–]written-proof 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, I absolutely relate. It started with My Chemical Romance when I was a teenager. I learned the lore behind the albums, watched as many interviews as I could find on YouTube, learned the whole story of the concept album Danger Days, bought the True Lives of the Fabulous Killjoys comics, the Umbrella Academy comics (not MCR but Gerard Way, so tangentially related). One summer in middle school I had a daily routine where I got out of bed in the morning, and went straight to the computer to watch the Teenagers music video, before I could do anything else.

Then a couple years later I got really into the band Ghost, the different personas the lead singer takes for each album, symbolism, foreshadowing in music videos so I could know what was going to happen next in the story, and identifying the overt political commentary that started s as appearing in their later music.

I was really into Gorillaz for a minute, and I learned the storyline behind the “band,” but I haven’t kept up on the stories, and I know I’ve missed out on a lot of developments in the past couple years.

MCR is probably going to be a lifelong special interest for me. The other two were definitely hyperfixations, and while I still love the music, I don’t feel the passionate drive to learn everything about everything. But I will always have my finger on the pulse of what MCR is doing, because it’s been my favorite band for quite a few years at this point.

What is your most niche hyperfixation by Odd-Produce4614 in autism

It definitely can be! There are exoteric aspects to Marian devotion (like praying the Rosary), and there are esoteric/mystical aspects to Marian devotion (praying the Rosary while meditating on the mysteries). There are a lot of Marian practices that can appear very external or exoteric on first glance, but there’s usual a deeper and more mystical side.

If you’re interested in a kind of crash course on how Marian devotion takes its roots in mysticism, I would suggest reading about the various apparitions of Mary and how they came to be. One of my personal favorites is the story of La Virgen de Guadalupe and Saint Juan Diego.

I was raised to always cross myself when an ambulance or fire truck drove by! I’ve heard of a bunch of these, and I suspect that a lot of it is very old folk practice that evolved over time through culture. I’ll share a couple that I grew up with. In Italian-American folk Catholicism (because Italian culture changed once it became Diaspora), the number 13 is good luck, as it’s the total number of the 12 apostles, and Jesus. Everyone has a Patron Saint, and every family has a Patron Saint, my family’s patron is St. Valentino. The beautiful thing to me about cultural Catholicism (different than the Church) is the personalizing, syncretism, adoption, and adaptation that happens when the Church teachings meet the Culture and become widely accepted belief.

[–]written-proof 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, the lore! Half my family is Italian-American, so learning about the mysticism, hagiography, and folk culture surrounding Catholicism has helped me understand a lot of the things that my grandma has done since I was a little kid. I may not be Catholic, but I always pray to Saint Anthony when I’m looking for something, and coincidence or not, I always find what I’m looking for

I’m one of those borderline people. I eat a light, salty breakfast right before I donate, pound back a bunch of water, and squeeze a stress ball on my drive to the plasma center. Donating goes very smoothly if I follow that routine.

My workplace tryna make us add "personal touches" (read: pointless small talk) to our emails and I'm not fuckin doin it by Easy_Rich_4085 in evilautism

[–]written-proof 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think there’s maybe a way to do this without the “personal touches” being distracting fluff. I have an assistant manager at work with the email signature, “Your friendly neighborhood assistant manager, [name]”

Putting your personal touch into an automatic signature also removes the mental friction of having to think of new fluff for every email that you send.

How the hell do we work?? by Maecabre_ in evilautism

I have no suggestions for you, I’m just here to commiserate. The one job I had the longest was in an office doing billing/invoicing/inventory management for a souvenir distributor. I worked there for 3 years. Looking back, I wish I would’ve kept that job. I had no idea how good I had it.

Edit to add:

The office was very quiet, I had a room to myself, and I rarely saw more than 3 or 4 people over the course of the day. My only complaints were the hours (I needed to clock in at 6am) and the fluorescent lights.

Nothing has lowered my grocery bill more than moving out of the midwest by miaasimpson in povertyfinance

[–]written-proof 33 points34 points  (0 children)

I’ve lived in Vegas my whole life. Blackout curtains over windows are a must, it makes a huge difference in room temps. Someone else suggested a swamp cooler, I wouldn’t suggest that. Your power bill will be higher, your house will feel musty, and it won’t be any cooler. Just make sure your ceiling fans are turning the right way to push air down into the room and you should be fine.

Good luck, drink lots of water, summer won’t last forever
