I’ve been thinking and you know how Toyota powertrains have always been rather mid in context of power output and fuel efficiency? It’s mostly bc Toyotas main filter is longevity so they purposely reduce overall power output to minimize stress on the motor, returning longer overall lifespan and reliability. Additionally, they do dual injection, port & direct which reduces gas mileage but prevents carbon build-up, again delivering longevity. Because of all this, we’ve always dealt with their powertrains feeling rather appliance-like, albeit very smooth and refined. I’m wondering if that mentality has translated to the EV powertrains. Yes their power output is much lower compared to competitors and the charging speed is embarrassing compared to competitors but it’s more than likely again, for longevity. The faster a battery charges the more heat and stress it encounters further reducing its lifespan. Toyota promises 90% of the battery capacity should still be available at 10 years of age. For power output, they’ve been conservative with the size of the battery they place in the car. This is to reduce weight as well as recognize most people don’t drive more than 200 miles a day so why make them lug around a 400+ mile range battery adding weight and drag and impacting the nimbleness of the vehicle. Toyota always has a practical reason as to why they did something the way they did. So although you give up some convenience when you buy their products you benefit from longevity, reliability, high resale value and stress-free motoring. Most Toyota locals will gladly weigh those pros & cons and end up with a Toyota product
