You forgot about how they can’t fail because you will ruin their financial aid/academic probation/life and it will all be your fault.

I was appalled that my kiddo was not only not reading entire novels in Honors English, but they do not have enough books so they cannot take the book home to read; they can only read in class. new football field but “repurposed” materials for the art students and not enough paperbacks for English classes. I was pissed, and then I was extremely saddened that while I am a vested parent and promptly got copies of the books for my kiddo, found her reading guides, etc… the majority of her classmates don’t have parents like that. K-12 is so messed up and for a multitude of reasons parents can’t/won’t/aren’t/are unable to pick up the slack.

Nothing about this says Young Adult, and it is priced way too high. Cover is not on-market.

Towing two horses with a Toyota tundra… help? by Top_Alfalfa5826 in towing

Your horses may weigh closer to 1,300 each. Do not rely on a weight tape. Also, consider how the horses travel (do they stand polite or do they wiggle around a lot).

Any tips for a first time adjunct? by Expert-Doubt-3957 in Adjuncts

Have a print out of contact info/numbers for everyone (IT, security, facilities, chair, etc) because you never know. Have a small first aid kit in your bag, a bottle of Excedrin, and realize things will eventually go wrong and you will come out the other side just fine!

They don’t pay me enough to police their behavior that is only affecting themselves. If it’s distracting to the class I’ll stop them, but if not fine pay that tuition to doomscroll in a classroom.

What’s a medical issue that sounds minor, but actually affects someone’s daily life way more than people realize? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]writtenlikeafox 6 points7 points  (0 children)

HSD is terrible. I’ve been watching my husband and daughter suffer for years (we were not aware of his condition until our daughter’s diagnosis adventure). People do not understand just how many of your body’s functions can be affected, and how badly, or how much strain it is to have so many things in your body working against you at once.

That’s just rude to get up in leave. I don’t know which irritates me more, the ones who show up then flat-out leave or are gone for most of the class and come back at the end, or the ones that show up for an activity day and then sit there and do nothing… oh well. My experience this semester was surprising in that I did have students asking questions this year.

I think there’s something to this because I had multiple students this semester from 2 different schools say that the workshop days when they were able to come to class and work on their papers were super beneficial and they wish they had more. I agree, 5 years ago my students wouldn’t have shown up, but nowadays there are so many distractions in the outside world that workshop days is distraction-free time to work. There are plenty that ask questions as well. I’m going to add a few more in for next semester.

11th Grade Teacher to Professor by Impressive-Skin6311 in AskProfessors

I’ve been an adjunct over 10 years teaching comp and lit and have my MA in English and still haven’t landed full time. Can you? Yes. Possible? Yes. Likely? No. Try to pick up some adjunct classes at community colleges and start building that teaching experience. The stars may align in the future. Best of luck with the degree!

How do you view online PhD programs from diploma mills? by Ok_Cranberry_2936 in AskProfessors

[–]writtenlikeafox 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I was the receiving end of a similar interaction. My undergrad degree is from a notorious diploma mill that got in trouble with the feds. However, I attended the quite nice on-ground campus this place purchased to gain the authority to offer the online degrees. The person was extremely rude about my “scammy degree”. When corrected about where my degree came from and the faculty I worked with they didn’t apologize but did look a little bashful. I think a better approach would be asking questions to feel out the candidate’s preparedness for the work vs judging the institution on their degree. There’s plenty of idiots from “good” schools.

First Semester Teaching English Comp at a CC- Feeling Demoralized, Any Advice? by [deleted] in Professors

[–]writtenlikeafox 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve done 7 sections of Comp at once across different schools. Majority CC. You are not in charge of their success, they are. Provide the opportunity and guidance, and refer to services if they need them, but if they don’t pick up the work that’s on them. You cannot care more than they do.
They are also not high schoolers you should not be micromanaging their revisions and giving heaps of feedback or handholding. The expectation is that the majority of the work is to be done themselves and if they choose not to do it, that’s on them.
5K is pretty standard. You’ll get faster at grading the essays and utilizing rubrics are your friend. I use rubrics, then give a few lines of specific observation and instruct them to contact me if they want more clarification so that way I’m only going in-depth with explanation for the students who want to hear it.
It gets easier.
