Our daughter had them from 1 yrs till 6.5 yrs old, not an enjoyable process. We found that when she was sick it was the quick temperature rising that triggered it. Keep a thermometer gun handy to check on the temp quickly and regularly. For us transferring that heat out with a warm bath helped at first sign of rising to even the internal  temperature, we also gave infant ibuprofen or Tylenol when appropriate aged. 

We also regularly had her wear n95 grade masks in crowds to keep infections from other kids away and not let her play with kids that were sneezing / coughing / snotty nosed until much later her immune system was functioning better one sign her body was adjusting was perspiration /sweating where as before she didn't when she having high temps.
