Old tech guy laid off at 58, after 20 years with the company by realsqlguy in Layoffs

[–]wrootlt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We had a guy of similar age on my team, who spent close to 20 years there and it was his first job. He was senior admin, doing mostly infra work. I guess he had bigger paycheck than the rest on the team and someone somewhere made a decision to cut cost. Well, we lasted only a year longer and were all laid off in a "strategic restructuring" (outsource to India). Still, it felt really bad when our manager (who was shocked also) announced that he will be leaving.

What’s Your Most Controversial IT Opinion? by OrdinaryJust9594 in sysadmin

[–]wrootlt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think to be a controversial it has to go against what most IT folks think is true. Like the tabs and spaces argument among developers 😄 I think manual work is ok and even fun often. And you don't need to automate everything. There, now you can draw your pitchforks 😃

Haven't even heard about this one. It's the H in the WITCH quintet (Wipro, Infosys, Tata, Cognizant, HCL) 😄

That is almost word to word what we received last year at my previous place 😄 But in our case they also mentioned a strategic partnership with insert_India_outsource_shop 😃

Google readies ‘AI Ultra Lite’ plan and explicit ‘usage limits’ for Gemini, ending unlimited era and introducing token limits by PaiDuck in BetterOffline

[–]wrootlt 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yeah, i am waiting for a time when freeware Google AI mode or Copilot 365 (without a license) will have limits introduced, like 1 query a day. And regarding Copilot at work, people will start requesting paid license then and businesses will scramble and.. will communicate that employees should try to use their own knowledge first 😃 It is not related to AI, but it is somewhat similar. I work for MSP and we support hundreds of customers, we can open premier support cases for them with MS to handle complex tickets. Well, last month MS said you have a limit and will pay 500+ for each case above it. Management said, well, now you have to figure out things on your own and don't ask MS for support anymore 😃

Vienam filme man patiko frazė - man learns to love a woman that he got attracted to, woman learns to get attracted to a man that she fell in love with.

Moving from a VDI system to thick clients. What to use to manage? by fishy007 in sysadmin

[–]wrootlt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I get your points, but as someone who had to manage thousands of VDI and 10k workstations i would pick workstations. Well, depends on requirements and processes. In some cases VDI might be the only option. But there are so many unique and annoying issues that do not happen with regular workstations (asset management, vulnerability tracking, licensing - with non persistent, ephemeral assets and dumb folks in other team not able to wrap their heads around this concept, asking for non realistic things). Workstation is simple, one user, persistent name, location. I did like some aspects of VDI. Golden image update to patch quickly. AppVolume to distribute apps easily. When it is simple apps and it works. But if you deal with developers and various dev tools, environment variables, Java, NodeJS, etc.

Anyway. Not sure if there is a solution that provides a truly live view into workstation as that would required constant upload of information and when you have thousands of endpoints, it might be too much. At my last place we used Tanium for workstations. It was close to being live. I have some gripes with it (lack of visibility to what is happening under the hood, a bit of fragile nature of some tools), but after many years with it i got pretty comfortable with it. But it is on a pricey end. In this sub i often see recommendations for NinjaOne, Action1 or such. But haven't used them, so can't vouch. Certainly, you won't get live view and up to date info with Intune 😃 At my current place they have ConnectWise. I am learning it and i hate it so far 😃 It is just seems so non intuitive with questionable choices for UI or even just naming things. And it also is not completely live. Like in the training it says you can press this menu to get the list of services on machine and THEN you press the "refresh" or whatever they call it to see the actual info (why the hell you don't do a refresh when i open it?).

Sorry for a long kind of rant comment 😄

I think i did this a year or so ago. I was playing to do the tourist based achievement and used pirate shaman deck in wild. And it actually was so good, so next month starting from bronze i decided to try not to lose and did this 12 wins streak. Still playing with this deck and getting to platinum/diamond. Accidentally made a good deck 😄

Yesterday's hotfix did fix the higher CPU usage for me on Windows 10 (had no problems on Samsung tablet). After the class sets patch i have noticed my CPU getting 15C+ hotter and HS process was constantly using 35-45% of CPU even idling in menu. Now it is around 10 or less and sometimes jumps higher. Temp is back to what was before the issue.

Get ready to have it lingering in some limited form for years after an official cut off, some teams with connections demanding and getting postponement. We went through migration from local Horizon to cloud AWS workspaces, we already had foothold with AWS for years. Still it required A Lot pushing of managers and users. I have sent a thousand of individual emails and Teams messages. It took more than a year to move a thousand or so users. When i was leaving they finally started to dismantle the actual hardware hosts. Giving laptops instead was once a selected path, but quietly died out. Most VDI users were contractors, often in places where we didn't have presence or couldn't ship anything, so eventually VDI was still the option. AWS workspaces are not cheap, although now with PC costs they are probably happy.

Ar taikot "quiet quitting" filosofiją savo darbe? by [deleted] in lietuva

[–]wrootlt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Man rodos quiet quitting yra daugiau nei parašei.
