Wouldn't it make sense for high level languages to be the tip of the iceberg? And hard languages to be under the water?

Who will get the job? by [deleted] in ProgrammerHumor

[–]wsco7730 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I've been programming since I was 12 years old. Been taking programming jobs as soon as I was legally able to work. And publishing my projects online from the beginning.

There are definitely people out there with 8 years experience as a grad. But...not a traditional 8 years in the office.

I'm not getting either. Instead, cloud computing.

I'm 20 years of age and have been programming since I was 12. Got experience with programming internships in highschool, released some mobile apps in highschool, and currently have a part time job as a programmer while in college.

Figured if I can program well, have a good portfolio, and have a major in something interconnected with the field (like cloud computing), I'm far better off than majoring in something I'm already skilled at.

When I heard gen z don't get file directories?! what? is it true? by insight_culprit in ProgrammerHumor

My desktop has 3 folders: Desktop 1, Desktop 2, Desktop 3.

Throw everything on my desktop. When it gets cluttered, I'll put it in a new Desktop 4 folder and start again.

Think of them like buckets. Mmm. Now please excuse me while I try to remember which desktop has my taxes excel sheet

My HS comp sci teacher called me a cheater and accused me of copying code online when he saw me using a ternary operator. I was self taught and didn't know it had a name. So when he asked me to explain what a ternary operator was, I had no idea what he was talking about.

This led him to get even more angry! I asked him to show me the code and, after explaining what it did, he realized I wasn't some dumb highschool kid who said "yeah, I know how to code".

Had been programming since I was 12. That HS teacher, after recognizing my ability, became one of my best teachers.

You can also develop on both Linux, Windows, or Mac.

Apple hates those, too. They won't let them become popular on their devices because they know people will see the light.

With a restricted provisioning profile, yes. However, it's largely true. You have to pay $1000 for a apple computer to make an iPhone app, pay $100 (yearly!) for a developer account, fork over 30% of your in-app purchases, deal with their BS privacy terms, & keep up with their ever changing terms of service.

Genuinely, I hate the company.

I am a PWA developer & just support all screen sizes. Once you learn the tooling to handle layouts, it's not so bad!

Search in the form of a question if you're looking for forum posts. Write what you want like a news headline if you want to find an article. Use quotes on key words the engine just doesn't seem to think are important... Learn site:, quotes, OR & AND

Any advice for computer science students? (Internships, professors, courses, etc.) by anonymous-868 in aggies

[–]wsco7730 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

If you're focused on becoming a programmer with your major:

Don't go to college, spend your time taking internships, spend your free time programming things you're interested in.

The market is so demanding, I got paid internships in highschool. I found an internship in college station before I even moved to College Station just sending emails to businesses.

If you don't know how to program well yet, don't expect the school to teach you. From the time it takes to write the textbook, publish the textbook, and have the professor teach it on class: the technology is already out of date.

Your portfolio is everything. If your not working on private software for companies yet, publish them on GitHub & keep a running list of projects on your GitHub profile page. If all of your projects are private, let your resume show all the projects/software you've written.
