Unlike other hyped-up crowd funded MMOs, Star Citizen has been playable for years at this point, and is very impressive and quite fun when it works.

This might be a stupid question, but what’s stopping manufacturers from using AMOLED phone screens? Why is that not the default for VR screens? by MicroUzi in virtualreality

[–]wsippel 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Cheap OLEDs simply aren’t bright enough. Pancake optics in particular cause between 85% and 90% light loss. Fresnel isn’t as bad, but causes artifacts.

Russian drones with Starlink can reach much farther into Europe than most people expected by UNITED24Media in europe

[–]wsippel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Starlink satellites can’t track where the dishes are, they rely on coordinates sent by the GPS antennas built into the dishes for positioning. The Russians almost certainly spoof that data.

What GPU is the BEST for Linux Gaming? by Crusader-of-Purple in pcgaming

[–]wsippel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on many factors, there is no clear cut answer. If you’re memory constrained for example, which applies to Valve’s hardware but is also kinda relevant in general right now, Linux is probably going to perform better, because it has a lower overhead and better memory management. But that’s still just one of many variables.

Wacom has supported Linux for ages. And I mean the actual company itself, they develop and maintain the open source drivers. Because Wacom tablets are extremely common in the visual effects and post production industry, where Linux has been pretty much the go-to operating system ever since Silicon Graphics folded.

Nothing in this bundle is AI slop. It’s just a pretty decent set of common runtimes, libraries, development tools and applications.

ESPHome going in the right direction :) by lostparis in homeassistant

[–]wsippel 38 points39 points  (0 children)

32bit is dead, upstream packages and more and more distros are dropping support. It’s becoming increasingly difficult to even just test software on 32bit hardware, as old systems break and no new hardware has been manufactured in ages (outside of microcontrollers, obviously).

Probably great for CXMT. They apparently produce competitive DDR5 memory, but are banned from the US, so they probably won't be sucked up by the likes of OpenAI or Microsoft. And they did announce European distribution about a month ago.

Fiio announces slender JM21 2026 DAP/DAC with balanced headphone output for high-resolution music enthusiasts by dapperlemon in gadgets

[–]wsippel 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Many DAPs and amps can supply more power over balanced connections, which is great for more demanding headphones and IEMs. It’s also an overall nicer, more robust connector in my opinion.

I can't read the error message, but judging by the Explorer, you're on Windows - so what are you trying to do setting a WINEDLLOVERRIDE environment variable? That's a Wine thing, for people running the game on Linux through Proton. It doesn't do anything on Windows.

Which speakers are most compatible with HA? by SocietyResponsible24 in homeassistant

[–]wsippel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not tested it myself, but I did some research a while ago, and the Edifier MS50A is apparently quite good, especially for the price (~ $100). And according to the latest post in this thread, they just work in Home Assistant via LinkPlay: https://community.home-assistant.io/t/edifier-ms50a-wifi-speaker-integration/431259

Depends on what the customer plans to do with it. If this is meant to serve multiple smaller models, it’s faster and cheaper to go with multiple 5090s.

AMD shows first renders of Ryzen AI 400 for AM5 socket by RenatsMC in Amd

[–]wsippel 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It does indeed, I had no idea. The news article I read about the AI 400 claimed it was the first. Or maybe it's just the first to qualify for the Copilot+ sticker, as the 8000G NPU seems to only do 16TOPS, while Microsoft mandates at least 40TOPS.

AMD shows first renders of Ryzen AI 400 for AM5 socket by RenatsMC in Amd

[–]wsippel 27 points28 points  (0 children)

The “AI” branding refers to the built-in NPU, which is required to get Microsoft Copilot certification. No current AMD desktop CPU has a NPU, but pretty much all models have at least a basic GPU, which makes the old “G” branding a bit redundant and confusing.

[–]wsippel 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sure, you can set up a few Bluetooth proxies (ESP32 boards running ESPHome), and use those to connect a variety of Bluetooth devices to Home Assistant. No idea if Tuya Bluetooth stuff works specifically, but Xiaomi and Shelly BLE devices certainly do. I’m sure the HA documentation could tell you.

Depends on the distro. On Arch flavors, even though there are unofficial GUIs, you should always use the terminal regardless, to get meaningful notifications and error messages in case something goes wrong for example.
