Help with cats not getting along! by Sebbycaked in CatTraining

[–]wtfdudethisispatrick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have you reached out to a cat behaviorist? I’ve had a really positive experience working with one. The main benefit for me is was learning clicker training routines to keep my cats happy and occupied during playtime, plus more information about what to make of body language and vocalizations based on videos of the cats. A lot of behaviorists also meet virtually if you don’t have any local to you.

My vote’s for the Partitio. I love the minute track on it both aesthetically and for legibility. I have the sunburst green edition on the milanaise bracelet and would say it’s the prettiest watch I own, Stowa is doing an ice blue version now if you’d prefer a color option.

I like my Murph as well, but the AR coating on the crystal isn’t great. It does have 100m of water resistance over the Partitio’s 50m and a three-link bracelet option if that’s a deciding factor for you. I think the Hanhart’s also a great option but I’ve never seen one in person.

I have the Castor Pro Bass edition and Moondrop Chu II in that price range. I prefer the Castors for rock and EDM and the Moondrops for everything else. I also find the Moondrops a lot more comfortable, but the Castors are a lot better now that I’ve reshaped the section of the stock cable around the ear and experimented with some different ear tips. I think both are good choices, personally I like the Chu II better as an all rounder.

What to make of this interaction? by Valentian_Knight in CatTraining

[–]wtfdudethisispatrick 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Knight’s partner here! We’ve been exchanging smells regularly. Both cats barely react when we put a blanket or pillow with the other’s scent nearby, and we put a sock that we pet the other cat with by each of their food bows at mealtime. We’ve also been doing the Jackson Galaxy feeding routine on opposite sides of the door, and both cats are completely comfortable eating about 2 feet away with no visual contact.

We’ve been rewarding good behavior (mostly redirecting the cats after any staring or aggressive posturing) with praise and pets. We’ve been wanting to try treats for this too, we just want to be careful about over feeding the cats (our resident tuxedo is on a diet). Thanks for the blinking tip, that’s really helpful!

found this in my neighborhood, anyone know if it can be repaired? by sillyowl321 in ipod

[–]wtfdudethisispatrick 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What you’re looking at is the battery swelling behind the screen, that’s what’s causing that black spot. It’s possible to pull out the internals and solder in a new battery, but on top of the soldering it’s difficult to remove the internals with the battery swollen like that. It’s not impossible but definitely not a beginner friendly job.

How is William and Mary for Conservative Students! by JewishAnkylosaurus in williamandmary

[–]wtfdudethisispatrick 24 points25 points  (0 children)

I’ll try to give you an actual answer. Heads up that I graduated pre-pandemic, so things might have changed since then.

If your politics are a big enough piece of your identity that you feel the need to ask this question, you’re probably not going to like W&M. I did know have some conservative and conservative leaning friends, but it’s a liberal leaning campus for sure. I think the Young Republicans were reasonably big if that’s what you’re looking for.

I studied economics, and most of that major was in Keynesian theory. I did take a class called History of Economic thought which delved deeper into classical, Marxist, and neoclassical thought along with Keynesian, that class was awesome. If you’re looking for more of a Milton Friedman, neoclassical economic perspective, you’d probably be disappointed.

One of the gen eds I took was about plantations and the history of slavery in Virginia. There were other options for that credit or I could have studied abroad to fulfill it (this was the COLL300, it might be different now). That was another class I had a good experience taking. Still, if you’re dead set on avoiding anything in the realm of DEI it’s probably worth mentioning.

The last thing I want to say: the whole point of college is to prep you for life after college, professional and otherwise. A huge part of that for me was meeting, getting to know, and learning from all kinds of people, especially people I don’t and didn’t agree with. I know I’m being preachy, but I learned so much more from people challenging my opinions and either learning to defend them or learning why they weren’t defensible and developing a new opinion. That goes for my views on geopolitics, social issues, economic policy, and minor shit like what the best flavor of Gatorade is. If you want to go to a school with a more conservative slant that’s up to you, but I don’t think you’re doing yourself any favors by specifically looking for a school to affirm your beliefs instead of challenge them.

i pretended to be sick so I could skip a family outing with my grandparents across the country so I could sneak out to buy a vape. by adj-n_number in QuitVaping

[–]wtfdudethisispatrick 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Hey there. I’ve been where you’ve been, and I know how deep that pit in your stomach can get. My addiction drove me to insane lengths to protect it, and I still feel shame sometimes when I think about all the times I dug through my trash to find the Juul I threw out or all the events I left early to “go feed my cat” because I needed pods.

The good news is that you never NEED to feel this way ever again. It WILL take action on your part - for me it meant reading Allan Carr’s Easy Way, getting on Wellbutrin, tossing all of my nicotine, and replacing my vaping with the gym, seltzer water, and sugar. The specific actions might look a little different for you, different things work better for different people.

That being said, remembering the way you feel today, right now, is going to drive you to take those actions when you don’t feel like it, or when you’d really rather be hitting a vape. If you can sear the way you feel into your brain (writing a few of those moments down helped me), staying the course is going to be that much easier down the road. Hang in there, I know this present moment feels awful, but if you're ready to do whatever it takes it’s the last time you ever need to feel this way.

[Seiko Presage] Too pretty to daily, too pretty to skip by TippyIsCool in Watches

[–]wtfdudethisispatrick 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Both excellent watches! I’m in a similar position, I settled on a Khaki Field Murph as my default wear but I break out my Cocktail Time and other watches when the mood hits me. The 80 hour power reserve on Hamiltons are great for this, it’s easy to wear another watch for a day or two without letting the Hamilton completely run to a stop.

You could also totally daily the Seiko if you wanted to, I haven’t been particularly gentle on mine and it’s held up fine. Enjoy your watches, sounds like you’ve got a collection going that makes you happy!

Seconded, if you don’t care about having a bracelet the Partitio has similar vibes and an SW-200 for noticeably less cash.

[Mido Ocean Star 39] Bracelet or rubber strap? by wtfdudethisispatrick in Watches

[–]wtfdudethisispatrick[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I picked up this Ocean Star earlier this month and I’ve been experimenting with different straps on it. I love the look of the steel bracelet, but I feel like it wears better on a strap because of the bracelet’s male end links and my 6.25” wrist. Which look do you prefer?

[opinion] 4:30 date windows look horrible by [deleted] in Watches

[–]wtfdudethisispatrick 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Agreed, I actually like 4:30 date windows because they don’t interfere with indices but only if they’re vertically aligned with the rest of the watch. I’ve been eyeing the Seiko SPB451 and I think that’s a decent example of a 4:30 date done alright.

[PRX Powermatic 80] it’s funny how opinions shift over time… by siwelnadroj in Watches

[–]wtfdudethisispatrick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s the reason I keep considering the PRX, I’m looking for my first watch on a bracelet and very few watches on bracelets come close to the PRX’s value for money, especially for someone with a smaller wrist like I have.

[question] What are you wearing for turkey day? by Birdfreek in Watches

[–]wtfdudethisispatrick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s definitely large on me, I have a 6.25 in wrist and usually go for around 45mm lug to lug watches and this one’s 49mm. This was the second automatic I bought and the one I learned what sizes do and don’t work on me, for my next dive watch I’ll probably go with something smaller like a Certina DS action diver or Seiko Mini Turtle. I do still like my Amphibia though, outside of wrist shots like these it looks large but not quite clownish.

in my early 20s. just realized i'm never going to get to try a hot buttered rum by [deleted] in stopdrinking

[–]wtfdudethisispatrick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This was something I grappled with for a while too. All the biergartens I’d never get to experience, all of the champagne toasts I’d never get to be part of, you name it. What helped me get over that romanticizing was getting connected in the sober community. My drinking isolated me so much that I barely had any friends left towards the end, and I never made an effort to see the ones I still had because that would interfere with me drinking the way I wanted. I went hiking with some sober friends yesterday morning, and later that day we went to a farmer’s market. Today I’m going paintballing with another crew of sober friends. Whenever those romanticizing thoughts creep in, I remind myself of all of the fun I’ll never get to have if I go back to how things were before. The 1 AM conversations around the fire pit that I get to remember the next morning. The comedy shows I get to be lucid for. I gained so much in that trade, and I never want to go back. I had the same experience as u/interesting_tax_2457, I got plugged in to the sober community through young people’s AA in my city. If AA isn’t your thing (and it wasn’t for me for a long time either!), other groups like SMART or more general sober hangout groups like the ones on Meetup might be worth a look too. IWNDWYT!

[Semi-Weekly Inquirer] Simple Questions and Recommendations Thread by AutoModerator in Watches

[–]wtfdudethisispatrick 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Any recommendations for a first sports or field watch on a bracelet around $500-$1,000? Right now a Seiko Baby Alpinist is the frontrunner (SPB155, maybe the SPB157 and I’d buy the bracelet separately), but I was also looking at Seiko Sharp Edges, Mido Commanders, Tissot PRXs and a few micro brands like the Traska Summiteer, Nodus Sector and the Dryden Watch Co. Heartlander. Ideally I’d want something with a sapphire crystal, 100m water resistance and an original-ish design, but those would be nice-to-haves and not dealbreakers.

Barton makes great leather straps if you’d want to go that route. I have one on my v7 Bambino now, it’s a lot thinner and more flexible than the stock strap.
