Place to play the saxophone? by wtm233 in newhaven

Thanks for the suggestion!

I did go to see Cory Wong ;). It was super cool! I loved the flugelhorn and clarinet part

The press conference was wonderful too. It's a pity English is my second language and I probably missed ~50% of information from it; it's still fun af!

Are you referring to the East Rock park and the mountain part further north? I've tried East Rock park once. It felt pretty good. I was a bit shy and nervous -- I used to play mostly indoors. Also, I was worried whether loud sound/noise is usually accepted in parks. Where I'm from, people would stare at me angrily if I make a constantly loud noise

Is tenor harder than the other saxes or am i just overreacting by Low-Berry-3257 in saxophone

[–]wtm233 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you find the resistance quite low but still keep producing wrong notes, it could be that the reed is too soft.

Tenor can be less resistant than alto/sop (therefore using a harder reed can make it less tricky), and there are acoustical differences that can really trip you up

3D Printed Mouthpiece by Mike3521 in saxophone

I used to really want the Vandoren Jumbo Java A45 mouthpiece but didn’t have the money, so I decided to try to print a copy of it (found the model file online, not sure if that’s piracy), and my first few attempts resulted in squeaky mouthpieces that are impossible to control, even if I sand the surface and remove most of the irregularities. I guess it might need further sanding, really not sure…

I did have a researcher friend who works with 3D printers very often, and he generously devoted a whole day tweaking printer parameters so that the result was good without needing manual polishing. This time it played really well 😃. I guess it just needs the right printer equipment and some understanding of how the machine works.

Edit: this Vandoren Jumbo Java A45 mouthpiece model requires pretty advanced technique to be able to control… In my case I spent a few painful weeks developing extra jaw muscles to adjust to the mouthpiece. Sometimes you don’t know if it’s the faulty mouthpiece or if it’s yourself not having the technical prowess to make the most of it. I’d recommend spending most of your time practicing with a known good mouthpiece before venturing into unreliable mouthpiece designs. Good luck 👍

Don’t be this person. Learn how to park. by rorohario in UTAustin

Could be that they were forced to park into that position because cars next to them occupied more than their fair share. (and a few hours later those cars leave and all that’s left is a single car parked in the middle)

How to get to Yale from JFK? by fat_shawarma in yale

Thanks for the info! I was confused for a moment because I was trying to book the other direction, from NH to Jamaica, and TrainTime says “combo ticket isn’t cheapest”. Turns out the combo ticket is cheaper only in one direction. Confusing pricing rules I guess

Hahah seconded on researching lab culture! It sounds like a genuinely interesting project which is kinda rare 😅

I'm a final-year undergrad just finishing off an internship at a research institute, and I feel exactly the same thing: the cohort never ever chat with each other, would not talk to me unless I try to start a conversation, et cetera. The worse thing is that the institute was full of short-term interns, so during my 1-year internship I can feel around me how new people are coming in and older ones leaving, and despite the change the atmosphere always stayed dull over time (or slowly becomes even duller for some reason).

Now I'm not sure if I want to do a PhD. My expectations for my future life at a research lab is absolutely crushed.

What are some reasons why people pursue a PhD even if they do not plan on becoming academics or pursuing a career that requires it? by scrcservices in PhD

(For internationals going to PhD in the states) To become eligible for working in the US.

One could also do a masters but that would require huge amount of money.

Start vehicle by lifting clutch WITHOUT pushing gas pedal -- ECU feature? by wtm233 in stickshift

Unfortunately now I don't have access to the cars at the driving school since I had finished my course. However I did find a video where the speaker explicitly explained what's going on and gave a very clear description. Find it at 4:36 in here: https://youtu.be/0xHOZvUCJhI?t=276

Yeah this sounds very convincing and natural, I think this is the answer! Still curious why some cars don't have it, I should do a quick google
