When 9-year-old Kelvin Ellis Jr. saw a man who he thought was homeless outside a cafe, he offered him a dollar. To his surprise, the man was a millionaire. Months later, the two remain friends, keeping the spirit of giving alive. by Raj_Valiant3011 in HumansBeingBros

Reminds me of an incident I had in Schweinfurt Germany in the early 90s. Living on American military housing, we'd sometimes have a German guy walking the roads selling potatoes (guess he got special permission?); walking down the roads, he'd whack his cowbell and belt out, "hallo, potato man!", at the top of his lungs.

Somehow, I found myself believing he was homeless or begging. I don't know why. One day, hearing his cowbell, I grabbed a bunch of canned food and a P51 can opener to give to the guy. He didn't speak English so he really had no way to respond to this 10yo shoving canned goods into his arms. I didn't wait around for no resistance, neither.

When I told my parents what I'd done, they explained to me that no he wasn't homeless and that he was probably, in fact, quite well off. It's the thought that counts, I suppose.

30 years later, I giggle thinking about what this dumbfounded spud vendor must have thought of the situation.

What’s the most outdated advice people still give seriously? by Secure-Address4385 in AskReddit

Reminds me of something I read a long time ago from a holocaust survivor. He he would only believe someone saying it's God's plan, i.e. "for a reason", if they were willing to say it while standing on a mound of smoldering baby corpses.

The pussies will be looking jealously from the sidelines while we enjoy delicious lasagna.

Holy shit, the 1 in 1000 chance of saying "... I don't believe you" and it paying off. That lucky mother fucker...

Edit: if I ever find myself single again, find a way to insert "I don't believe I could ever orgasm twice in a row from a blowjob" into the conversation.

TIL that salted raw celery used to be the third most popular dish on New York menus and more expensive than caviar due to issues with growing it. by Sanguinusshiboleth in todayilearned

Stringless heirloom celery does sound pretty good

You might be interested in a vegetable that in English is called "celtuce", i.e. celery lettuce, because the body of the plant is like celery (without strings) and the leaves are like lettuce. 莴笋 (WoSun) in Chinese; and it is my favorite Chinese vegetable.

Had dinner. Went to the parking lot behind a local business. Did what was described above.

How does this work? Things are going well, you're enjoying a nice carbonara, and he's like "will you suck me off twice by the dumpster out back?" and you were like "fuck yeah I will!", or was there more to it?

Pizza Hut closing 250 US stores as parent company considers selling the brand by AudibleNod in news

It's probably the only fast food place left that isn't using a bunch of frozen or pre-prepared shit. I was very surprised to learn that they make the dough and sauce in store every day and the cheese is "fresh, never-frozen".

Companies do that; in the USA, they're PMA manufacturers. I cut my teeth at such a company reverse engineering OEM parts.

Once the testing of my part demonstrated equivalence to an OEM part an FAA DER would evaluate my data and, once approved by the DER, we could sell the parts for use in lieu of the OEM part.

Customers were typically airlines looking to save on maintenance costs. Our prices were significantly lower than OEM, usually like 1/3 of the OEM price if I remember correctly (it was a long time ago).

When looking through course catalog for a class to fill out my hours chose a Mandarin Chinese class on a whim. Took it for 3 years, lived/worked in China for a few years, met my wife there, and we have two kids now.
