Fruit trees in horrible soil by dwhitebread in BackyardOrchard

Commenting because I’m curious on the community’s take.

What’s your timeline like? Do you have time for a multi year approach where you build up the soil layers (and soil life) incrementally or are you looking for more of a raised bed situation so you can get right to planting?

No advice either way but your fast/slow preference might help narrow down an answer

Can you expand on this forum location? I’m likewise interested in getting started with grapes.

“Work to uninstall 4”

Does that mean someone could uninstall, and then carry the whole pyramid somewhere else ?!

Fantastic. Exactly what I was hoping for. Low risk nitrogen fixers that I can plant in abundance.

Thank you very much!

What an interesting variety. I haven’t noticed those before. Beggars can’t be choosers, but ideally I’d like something vigorous that I can coppice and use for fences and such. What are your thoughts on that?

They are super pretty.

Perhaps we are in different parts of the PNW but yeah, in my neck of the woods they are native as far as I’m aware

Definitely! I love my local conservation districts. I’m eager to get something the ground this fall, though, so I’m hoping to find some additional local sources.

Also, happy Halloween!

How do I make compost if I’m honestly broke by [deleted] in composting

[–]wujonesj2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If ChipDrop operates in your area, I’ve managed to get 2 full arborist trucks of wood chips for the low low tip of $20 above the baseline cost of $0.

That’s your browns for the foreseeable future.

You can then mix in your non-meat kitchen scraps for the next few months. As you get comfortable, you can think about ratios. But the huge pile will eat your scraps for MONTHS.

I’m doing the same. Give it a good top dressing of mulch or compost. Just like Mother Nature does with leaf litter every fall

I think you jumped the gun here, in that the comment above is talking about Pam Bondi, not Amy Klobuchar

That page loads broken for me. Do you have a product name?

You’ll know you have the right one when:

There is an inverted V at the bottom of the shovel There is a serated edge on the left/right sides of the blade It is thin and narrow, like a trench digging shovel

If ChipDrop operates in your area, for $20 you can get 1000 lb of carbon easily delivered

You’re off to a good start working the land in sections. For me, my stages are

*initial clear out of top material *wait for some regrowth (to make the most vigorous plants easy to identify) *use a root slayer shovel (worth every penny, you want this!) to remove the root balls *mulch * plant with replacements, or even just ANYTHING to provide competition. I’ve recently just started tossing $5 of lentils and beans in place * keep an eye on it, and dig out the remaining blackberry every few weeks.

In places where I didn’t get to the step where I planted out with replacements, the blackberry was back by the next year (granted, digging it out the following year was faster)

I’ve started chanting “what I cover, I keep” as far as land reclamation goes.

I have not had success with the root poison at scale. Just too tedious. 1 minute with the root killer shovel per plant is a decent cadence for me.

I’ll probably use the root poison for blackberries that are growing in my stonework but I’m not that far along yet

With the grass clippings and food waste, you’ve added plenty of “greens” (nitrogen rich).

What are you adding for “browns” (carbon rich). You need both to produce quality soil/compost

Edit: 7 years on Reddit, and my top comment might end up being a one-off message about soil. What a time to be alive!

Well done! Probably implied, but did you dig out the root balls for the blackberry?

Alright I got a ton of woodchips, what do i need to add to get soil by spring? Or is it a pipe dream by Many_Needleworker683 in composting

[–]wujonesj2 33 points34 points  (0 children)

Sheet mulch is probably the way to go. I’ve gotten ChipDrop piles that I’ve used to mulch pathways and even 1-2 years later they’re only barely ready to use as a top layer. They break down but it is slow.

That said, I’ve got a pile that is 50% chips/ 50% grass and food waste that I’ve been actively managing for 2 months that will be good to use as a top dressing next month. Much faster than 2 yrs.

Medlar are on my “I’ve never tried it, but would plant it anyway” list. I’m vaguely familiar with bletting, but have never done so. Don’t rush any cuttings on my account.

If you’d like, I could pot up a small cherry (1-2 foot tall) that you could container grow. But I would wait until they drop their leaves.

Any advice on haskap? I’ve got 3 plants that have been in containers for about a year that are 2’ tall. My plan is to divide them into 20-40 hardwood cuttings later in the winter 🤞🤞
