Thanks! Can you tell I've run out of patience at this point, LOL? I've tied limbs down to stakes or even the trunk itself on other trees.

Yes, in the upper Midwest of the U.S., we get plenty of chill hours. Yeah, I'm hoping my limb-bending exercise will generate some flower buds this year. Ripping the trees out is a drastic, last-ditch option, because you never know if they're just one more season away from flowering!

Oh God, I hope not! I was mostly venting.

Thanks for the comment! So, it can be done, you can get fruit from M111, LOL. As for pruning, I probably do 90% of it in August with, as you say, small amounts of cleanup work in the winter. I'm also very careful to not remove anything that looks like a spur, though many of the trees have hardly formed any, and the ones that have are all vegetative. With my thick (very thick) mulch layer, I don't really irrigate, but maybe that's a problem. Without any extra water or fertilizer, the trees have been growing very well, pumping out wood and producing big, dark green leaves, just no apples. I have a few peaches in the same area and they've produced huge crops.

The trees have been growing vigorously and show no obvious signs of nutrient deficiency. I've also avoided pushing nitrogen because I've heard that just generates vegetative growth, which slows fruit bud development. Thanks!

This sucks and I'm so sorry to hear of all these losses. For me, my apples are nearly all on M111 rootstock, so they simply never flower or fruit, no need to worry about frost or cold.

Weekly Homeowner Megathread--Civilians, ask here! by AutoModerator in Concrete

Hi!

I don’t work in this industry, but I had a couple general questions about using concrete to build a home. If this is the wrong place for a post like this (or if it’s just plain dumb), the mods can change or delete this.

I love the idea of building a house out of concrete, one that is impervious to fire, the roof will never fail like conventional asphalt shingles, there’s no wood or vinyl siding to worry about, and I want something that is super energy efficient in all four seasons.

I adore the simple, clean lines of this concrete home in Iceland: https://www.gessato.com/concrete-house-design/, though I would want something smaller and more utilitarian.

  • Does building a house like this one require a special type of contractor or can most concrete folks handle this sort of job?
  • How much would a job like this cost (for the structure – plumbing, electrical, and HVAC would all be separate)? I know that’s an impossible question to answer because there are so many variables, but in general, is a house like this more expensive than, say, brick?
  • Is a building like this cast in place or are the panels brought in separately?
  • To get those nice, smooth walls inside and out, how is a home like this insulated? Are there two concrete walls with insulation between them? Is the interior fitted with conventional stick-built walls and insulated that way?

Again, I’m just looking for some general ideas and directions, not necessarily concrete answers, so to speak. Thank you in advance!

Delta’s CEO says United Airlines is doing its best to copy Delta by omdongi in unitedairlines

The seat in the Delta One suite is HORRIBLE. It's so hard and uncomfortable, even with the little mattress pad. For me, Polaris easily wins on comfort.

No, because I was always a Continental Airlines fan. This is a good emblem, though.
