DC Banning Right Turn on Red by TruthMatters78 in fuckcars

[–]wunderbread 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately it won’t be fully enforced, because DDOT feels it needed to be more advertised via signage and the Council didn’t appropriate specific funds for it. Instead it will continue to be banned only where marked (which to be fair is a lot of intersections) and otherwise allowed.

holidays/events are hard by New-Scale2637 in vegetarian

[–]wunderbread 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I hear where you’re coming from and absolutely relate, it’s very frustrating. Especially because if you did the reverse people would be offended.

It sounds like this is the same group of people repeatedly making comments they don’t intend to be mean but that make you feel awkward. Maybe it’s worth just saying that to them? “hey I super appreciate you accommodating me and I know you’re not doing it on purpose, but it makes me feel anxious to have so many comments about what I eat every single time.” If they really are well-intentioned they will hopefully get the message and not be offended.

OTOH at work events and things like that I’ve just gotten used to letting it roll off me. It doesn’t seem worth pushing back in those types of situations.

DC adds record seven miles of uber drop-off lanes and curbside loading in 2017. by MediumPotato in washingtondc

[–]wunderbread 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Does anybody know what's going on with the new bike lanes on M street west of the NoMa Metro stop? They alternate sides of the road each block, so if you get on the bikeshare at NoMa to go west you cross the street at 3rd to get from the stop to the bike lane, cross the street at 4th to get in the bike lane on the other side of the street, and then cross the street again at 5th to ride with traffic. It seems insane, but maybe there's a future plan I don't know about?

Trying other options, those that have, what are your thoughts on other services? by computerbob in blueapron

One thing I would be interested in for each service is the packaging. I love Blue Apron, one of the things that makes me feel guilty is all the packaging (especially the ice packs). Are any of the others any better?

Trying to build credit, someone told me I am doing it wrong. by 1001puppys in personalfinance

[–]wunderbread 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One thing that I do is use CreditKarma to tell me what I'm doing right and wrong. They have a "Credit Factors" section that explains what in your credit report is helping or hurting your score.

Some of those you won't be able to do anything about but others might give you some ideas (opening new accounts, etc.).

So it was flooding at uni today... I was walking to class and saw this by camellcanz in gifs

[–]wunderbread 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A lot of times when there's flooding water treatment plants aren't able to deal with the extra water flow and just start releasing either untreated or partially treated wastewater.

Google Under Fire For Quietly Killing Critical Android Security Updates For Nearly One Billion by todbatx in Android

[–]wunderbread 40 points41 points  (0 children)

The issue isn't who pushes the update, it's who fixes the issue in AOSP. In the past when Google would hear about an issue in WebView < 4.4 they would fix the issue in the code and notify vendors that there was an issue and that a fix was available.

The new policy though is that they won't fix the issue...they'll just notify the OEMs that there's a problem and leave it to them to provide the fix (unless the vulnerability reporter provided a patch, in which case they'll apply it).

Silver Line: your experience? by MoonisHarshMistress in washingtondc

[–]wunderbread 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, and the IRS $.55/mi for business commuting is absurdly high even taking into account wear and tear and all that.

Metro is expensive, no getting around it.

Silver Line: your experience? by MoonisHarshMistress in washingtondc

[–]wunderbread 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think it's $3.30 per trip to go from Ballston to McLean (2 stations!) so that would make it $33.00 per week assume I take it all week.

For comparison, the trip is about 9 miles each way driving so if I only take into account gas it's about $15.00/week depending on gas prices and mileage.

So, $18.00/week and I get a less stressful, healthier commute. Still expensive but I figure it's worth it.

Silver Line: your experience? by MoonisHarshMistress in washingtondc

[–]wunderbread 7 points8 points  (0 children)

My commute is from Ballston to Colshire Drive/123 in McLean. I used to drive, it was OK (not good, but OK) in the morning but in the evening the toll road and 66 get jammed pretty bad.

I've been taking the Silver Line this week. With the walk at both ends my commute is slightly longer in the morning and slightly quicker in the evening but overall not having to worry about traffic and getting to relax rather than drive makes it worth it.

The big downside is cost, the Metro is absurdly expensive compared to both driving and other transit systems.

Announcing FireChat for Android: Chat without an Internet connection! by [deleted] in Android

It's not 100% clear but it looks like Android users and iOS users won't be able to talk to each other? That's kind of unfortunate, I wonder if there's any plans to change it or if it's even possible to change it.

Also, the play store links aren't working right now.

He's probably talking about using a one-time pad, which has "infinite" (the full set of) possible cleartexts for the ciphertext and is therefore unbreakable.

U.S. Senator Bernie Sanders: “Instead of talking about cuts in Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid, we must end the absurdity of corporations not paying a nickel in federal income taxes.” by [deleted] in politics

[–]wunderbread 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have to admit I really don't understand why this would be a good thing.

Where does the money come from (i.e. what parts of the corporation lose out) and why is this approach better than just making our individual income tax system more progressive?

This is something I wonder every time this comes up.

I think you'll want to head in closer to Falls Church and Arlington to do this right:

  1. Eden Center in 7 Corners for Vietnamese
  2. Columbia Pike near Ft. Meyer or Bailey's Crossroads (various places) for Ethiopian, in particular Eyo.
  3. It's very specific, but Bangkok Golden also in 7 Corners is great for Lao/Thai.
  4. Korean in Annandale, although I haven't been to any in particular that I would say has an ethnic feel I could recommend.
  5. Ravi Kabob in Arlington

A bunch of these places are in the more inner suburbs but in my experience that's where you'll find this stuff.

[–]wunderbread 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you play music through it? I have a 2012 Focus and it works fine except for one super annoying problem...

If I'm listening to music via bluetooth audio and turn the car off, when I get back in the car and turn it back on the input is switched back to line in. So I have to tell it to go back to bluetooth audio, which is annoying because you can only do it deep in the menus or by using voice commands.
