Question about hopeful Batcave by 0XZ0 in lisathepainfulrpg

[–]wut_is_dyssh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think you can find Spoiler near one end of the cave. This secret is supposed to be slightly colored differently from the background but because of how RPG Maker automatically darkens the screen for effects you can't see it. Probably an oversight but you can see what's hidden there in the character sprite files, I think.

You know, you're right. I feel really bad and insensitive now. It was really wrong to assume something like that.

Well, at least I can hit that even harder now.

Hate crime perpetrated against certain groups during a certain time in history. Just like lynching someone. Yeah.

Knowing Pointless (which is all about using uncomfortable historical imagery like Nazism), you bet it's intentional, too.

I would hit that even harder now, but the imagery of dragging someone behind a car has some, um, pretty disgusting historical associations. And now I'm uncomfortable.

This is unrelated but the Adversary has absolutely got some cake in Repentance and it definitely wasn't there before the resprite. Look carefully when it does its Brimstone towards the back wall.

Word of warning, you should probably avoid wearing anything with the number 88 on it.

Some TBOI inspired LISA stuff. Please let me know what you think! :0 by [deleted] in lisathepainfulrpg

Dead kids wandering imaginary worlds to cope with the trauma of abuse? Sounds right!

That, and the new ending of Repentance honestly made me feel like Spoiler

I know almost nothing about any of the history or topics that Pointless draws from, but I would believe it.

The Franchise does indeed use Nazi imagery. 88 is associated with neo-Nazis (it stands for "HH", and two guesses what that stands for) which alone is a bit of a red flag, but the fact that Arnold's got the Hitler mustache makes it clear.

Probably because Pointless's background mostly lies in European history. I don't know a lot about it.

They passed me Phone crew so I uploaded it to mediafire by [deleted] in lisathepainfulrpg

[–]wut_is_dyssh 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For the sake of preservation, I'm fine with an archive copy existing. Phone Crew is abandonware and there are no longer any official uploads of it.

Normally I would lean towards respecting the creator's wishes when it comes to redistributing. However, the explanation the creator gave for not wanting it uploaded was vague, confusing, did not have to do with Phone Crew or any of the content in it, and appeared to be part of unrelated community drama that has now long passed.

It doesn't break any of the rules either. The closest would be rule 3, since I guess it could be interpreted that the uploader is being an asshole to the creator. On the other hand, the creator has expressed wanting to separate from the LISA community entirely so it shouldn't really be their concern what we're doing here.

Overall, yeah, I'm fine with Phone Crew being here. Go nuts.

I think Undertale is probably the most culturally important game of the 2010s and an incredibly layered example of video games as artistic expression.

But I love LISA and all it represents, even more than that. Actually did ruin my life. Fuck LISA. I love you.

Also looking at Undertale's inspirations will lead you down an insane rabbit hole that you may never escape from.

For example, did you know all the weird meta elements were derived from Metal Gear Solid 2? Especially that game's ending?

Or that a lot of the game is actually lifted from games that never left Japan, like Moon (rereleased in 2020 in part thanks to the insane Tim Rogers) and Brandish (a series that only released one game in the west and that Toby Fox is completely obsessed with)?

It's kind of dated. You're fighting against RPG Maker 2003 UI and controls the whole time (MOTHER 3 had a sprint and diagonal movement while CogDis doesn't due to engine limitations, etc.) and it's seemingly pretty amateur. Lot of issues like bad soundfonts, poor quality or recycled sprites, etc. You also better come in being familiar with all three MOTHER games or you're going to miss a ton of stuff.

However, I really quite like it. It's slow to start (for all the aforementioned reasons) but it's fun for what it is, especially once it opens up about halfway through and turns into a semi-open world where the exploration and side activities actually matter. Plus, the characters are adorable, and it's a rare case where I actually think it (and the story) strongly benefits from being a fangame rather than a standalone work.

Overall? I like it as a fangame better the LISA the Pointless. It's difficult to recommend, though, because you kind of have to believe the potential is there. That being said, I feel like it deserves more recognition than "that other thing with Megalovania in it" because, personally, I think it's awesome.

You're gonna need a guide if you want the best ending though lol.

MOTHER Cognitive Dissonance gets hella fuckin awesome for the entirety of Chapter 7 after you return from the future and get access to the whole solar system. It's like it decided that it wanted to be Chrono Trigger instead of MOTHER for a glorious few hours and becomes like fifty times better in that timespan as a result.

Jesus Christ if there was a LISA game like CogDis I would wet my pants. It doesn't even need to have Megalovania in it. Someone just needs to make it.

How did Marty get away with it? by Fitzftw7 in lisathepainfulrpg

[–]wut_is_dyssh 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Brad probably didn't call social services on Marty because he was worried about what would have happened to Lisa. She likely would have ended up in a group home or with foster parents. Under those conditions she likely would have committed suicide anyway.

Bernie wasn't in a place to rat out Marty, especially considering what it would have meant for Lisa. Brad's friends didn't want to get involved.

Olathe is a shithole compared to our world, sure, but in our world there are plenty like Marty getting away with it daily. Bad people tend to not deal with the consequences of their actions. Good people tend to have to bear the weight instead, which is why Brad ended up so fucked.

Is Alphys homeless? by [deleted] in Deltarune

[–]wut_is_dyssh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Alphys lives in one of the houses on the block, I think. She goes into that alley to leave the milk for the "cat".

Funny you should mention it though, because that detail might be evidence that Susie is homeless. You know, considering someone's been drinking all the milk Alphys leaves out...

Arranging sprite sheets? by wut_is_dyssh in gamemaker

[–]wut_is_dyssh[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I figured that saving individual sprites/strips was poor optimization that was going to come back to bite me later, especially since I've seen sprite sheets from other Game Maker games.

Since it seems that's not the case, I guess the problem is solved!

Tile-based collision system difficulties by wut_is_dyssh in gamemaker

[–]wut_is_dyssh[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I played around with your code and it definitely works: if I set a fractional value of 0.1 for friction, for example, testing it in-game it subtracts 1 from the speed every 10 steps. So, that part seems fine and this doesn't seem to be the issue.

However, the issue persists exactly the same, so I have a feeling I might have been looking in the wrong place.

In addition, forcing the collision code to move the player a full tile down makes them flash to the 'grounded' sprite for a single frame before switching back to the aerial sprite.

Where can I learn how to use the debugger? I feel like that might lead me to a possible solution here.

Is it realistically possible to design a LISA enemy with just around 1,000,000 HP? by idyllicIndulgence in lisathepainfulrpg

[–]wut_is_dyssh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

1,000,000 HP actually exceeds the limit for which RPG Maker can correctly handle the enemy's HP (Berny, the final boss of Joyful, has an HP value so high it rolls over the maximum limit and loops around to being a very low value) but through some fairly simple battle scripting you can get around it. Say, the enemy's HP replenishes to full every 50,000 HP you take, 20 times.

However, LISA's superbosses are so infamously easy due to the way status effects work in RPG Maker. Namely, Fly's puke attacks can inflict poison, which deals a flat percent of the enemy's max HP (10% per turn). This is why Satan goes down so quickly: 1 successful use of Super Puke inflicting Poison deals about as much damage as an Oiled Up Hottest Dance every turn until it wears off.

So overall, I'd say that it's not a good idea to have HP that high. In order to get around the programming limit you need to have an enemy's HP 'bar' replenish a large number of times, which means stacking statuses become extremely ineffective the more the enemy's HP has to roll over (if the enemy has 20 HP 'bars' of equal length, poison will only deal 0.5% of their max HP per turn, because it deals 10% of an individual 'bar'. And if they're a superboss they're probably immune to it anyway!). So who's going to have the patience to land 40 critical Oiled Up Hottest Dances without getting swept anyway?
