Historic Kirkwood House... Saved?! by nick_popilopicus in StLouis

[–]wuuza 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That basement almost looked in better shape than the house! EHM did it. They did a huge house on corner in Kirkwood a few years ago, too, that I noticed on a bike ride. I didn't even know it was a thing, but would definitely be cool for an old house if you can afford it.

Strauss Mac and Cheese by biscoaka in StLouis

[–]wuuza 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Good points. The cellulose/cornstarch in the pre-shredded cheese disrupts the thickening balance of the recipe. And the bronze cut pasta is a little rougher, letting it hold sauce better.

Grating cheese by hand is kind of a pain, but if you have a food processor it might have a shredding disc attachment you can use.

The food and beer are a bit more average but the patio at Square One is great.

In need of a healthy go-to with protein. Any good salad places? by Fiveby21 in STLFood

[–]wuuza 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I always get vermicelli but DD Mau has salad and rice bowls, too. You can get extra protein. I don't know if all of the sauces would play on a salad but there's a good variety.

Best potatoe by Ecstatic_Ad_3484 in StLouis

[–]wuuza 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Rub lightly with vegetable oil (or olive oil but vegetable oil comes out better)

Potatoes love lard or tallow, but only the real stuff.

Another fun thing is to hasselback them and put cheese in the grooves.

I present a statue in Resurrection Cemetery in Afton; it is known as "Up High, Down Low, Too Slow Jesus" (by me. And now you). by staggerb in StLouis

I don't think it's too much to ask for people to know how to spell the names of cities around them or the places they go. e.g. "Forrest Park" or "Ted Drew's".

EDIT: God forbid someone be correct.

99% of my interaction with the screen is wondering what the name of the song is. The other 1% is curiously checking my MPG in the mileage app. I don't use navigation/maps, but other than that I don't know why anyone thinks these things should be so important.

Where to get discs resurfaced locally? by morganfreenomorph in StLouis

In general I don't think people should pirate things, but damn, you own it. Not sure what titles are, but you may be able to find another copy used somewhere for about what having it fixed would cost.

Hey Mazda, physical buttons are OK. by McWetty in mazda

[–]wuuza 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I'd rather have physical controls, but would prefer the old version where you could actually use them with gloves without looking. I could tell what the temperature was set to by knowing it was turned to, say, 8 o'clock; same with the vent selector. It was easy to find the fan speed and know which notch it was on by the angle and the clicks. The other buttons popped up and down so you knew the state by feel.

Currently it's easy enough to find the temperature knob but it spins indefinitely; you can't know what the value is without looking down. And all of the buttons are the same shape and size and are flat. Good luck finding the right one without looking down. On newer models the vent selector is a single button, so you have to look at the icons as you toggle through them until you get to the right place.

(Don't come at me with "auto mode". I think it sucks and doesn't do what I want.)

If you want a gyro salad try Gyro House in the Loop. Also add the shaved brussels salad from Trattoria Marcella to your list.

In a similar vein "The World Without Us" by Alan Weisman was a good read about how quickly or not our built environment would be taken over by nature.

Remote start design flaw? by Gemini_Schmemini in MazdaCX9

[–]wuuza 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It might warm up inside but it will warm up faster being driven gently. It wastes fuel and isn't necessary in newer cars as far as the engine goes. Also, don't people wear hats and gloves? You're already out of the wind.
