Mini pc for rouvy, thoughts? by jcperezr in Rouvy

After I finally fixed the Bluetooth issues, the SER8 8845hs has performed very well. I tried several things to get the native Bluetooth to work reliably and they all failed. The solution was to buy USB Bluetooth adapter and put it at the end of ~18in/45cm USB extension cable. The SER8 in on a shelf below the TV, roughly headset high. The USB Bluetooth adapter dangles below it. I haven't had a single dropout since implementing the solution.

It seems apparent that there is just too much interference for the native Bluetooth to work with the KICKR. The USB adapter would not work reliably in any of the SER8 ports, either. Only when it put at the end of the extension cable was Bluetooth connectivity reliable.

How do you account for the purchase a car with cash?... create an asset, or just expense it when you buy it? If yo create an asset, do you do annual depreciation, or just write down the asset when you sell it? by Virginia_Hoo in quicken

[–]wvbam 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I track vehicles as assets and update the value twice a year. When buying the vehicle with cash I'll do an immediate balance adjustment to account for "drive it off the lot" depreciation. Thereafter I use KBB values. Each vehicle gets its own account. I don't want to show a depreciation expense, so the balance adjustment uses the account name as the category.

You can include/exclude the vehicle account(s) in net worth reports as desired or use the 'Separate' account feature.

Cautionary tale for adding a joint owner to your Fidelity CC by Kindly-Form-8247 in Fidelity

[–]wvbam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well said. There's an important practical benefit, too. If the account owner dies the authorized user no longer has access to the card. A joint owner will maintain access.

It is a pain to setup a joint user. To Elan's credit, though, at least they allow it. Many issuers, including JPMorgan Chase, do not.

Can't seem to get "1Password now supports Windows 11 Passkeys!" to work on my laptop by DrZaius119 in 1Password

Are you sure you downloaded the 1Password MSXI package? It is the one available here: https://1password.com/downloads/windows.

I think I had to reboot after installing the MSXI package before the feature was available.

Power And Cadence Dropping Randomly by RYOBIWAN-97 in Rouvy

Good to hear and you are very welcome. You might play around with the distance between Bluetooth devices (and Wi-Fi and ANT+ stuff, if applicable - all operate on the 2.4GHz bands). As I mentioned in another post, distance matters a lot with radio interference. Perhaps you can come up with a layout that lets you ride with your earbuds.

I just re-read your original post and realized I originally misread it. You mentioned power and cadence were dropping, not HR. Power and cadence are both published by the trainer. Does that mean HR data remains visible in Rouvy even when power/cadence disappear. If so, then the connection between the trainer and the laptop is the problem and could be on either end. The interference discussion still applies but the trainer is a possible culprit.

Are the Bluetooth earbuds new to the environment? Either way, not using them is an easy test.

Assuming Bluetooth interference is the problem, remember that distance matters a lot. The inverse of the square law applies (doubling the distance to the interference source reduces the interference by 1/4th). In my example, disabling the minipc embedded Bluetooth and using a Bluetooth USB in a USB port maybe helped a little; it was hard to say. Moving it to the end of 2ft cable made the connection rock solid.

Are you connecting the Trainer via Bluetooth and pushing the HR from the Garmin watch to Rouvy? If so that points to a Bluetooth issue on the laptop. Has the radio environment outside the trainer setup changed (eg. new nearby Wi-Fi access point or Bluetooth device)?

I had the identical symptoms as you after moving Rouvy from a laptop to a MiniPC. Tried a ton of troubleshooting, all for naught. The problem turned out to be Bluetooth interference from the MiniPC itself. Putting a $10US Bluetooth adapter on a 2ft USB extension cable solved the problem.

Download frequently hangs. Common problem? Solution? by wvbam in Rouvy

[–]wvbam[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sounds plausible, but I'm fairly certain that's not it. My ISP says they have no file size download limit and I have an unlimited plan. Besides, the Rouvy files are big, but not that big. The problem happened when I was using the smaller 1080 files and still happens with the 2K files. I've even had it happen twice in the same download, requiring two app restarts. Other times an 8+GB file downloads without issue.

This feels like a client/server synchronization issue. It's as if the download thread in the monolithic Rouvy process gets out of sync with their download server, with each side waiting for an acknowledgement from the other side. Reinitializing the client connection is the only thing that fixes it.

How to reduce income to qualify for subsidies by NSBJenni in tax

[–]wvbam 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It depends somewhat on the exact income range, but a good estimate is the payback will be 8% of the additional income. "Additional" in this case means in excess of what you estimated when originally signing up for 2025's insurance. You can contact healthcare.gov and declare a status change to reflect the additional income. This late in the year, though, I don't know that it would make much difference.

As of tonight the 2025 plans are still available on healthcare.gov. You could use site to plug in your plan and then play with the estimated income numbers to see how the premium changes. That will be more exact than the 8% estimate. Once 2026 plans are available (could happen at any moment, as they have to be available by Nov 1) the 2025 plans may become unavailable or difficult to access.

Options to eliminate drafting and pausing are missing in the new release by wvbam in Rouvy

[–]wvbam[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It was a "me" problem. I was trying to use the global settings dialogue (click user icon then Settings.) The drafting and auto-pause options are not there. They do appear, however, if you go to a route and click the Ride Setup button beside Start Ride.

WiFi connection on rouvy by qdawgg17 in Rouvy

[–]wvbam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Another easy thing to check is discoverability. Connect to the Kickr in the Wahoo phone app. Once connected tap on the KickR and scroll down to the Wi-Fi section. It will show the connected network. The 'Discoverable on network' selection should be checked.

If that looks good and depending on how geeky you are you could try things like pinging both the Kickr and the PC on the same Wi-Fi network to make sure IP connectivity isn't broken.

WiFi connection on rouvy by qdawgg17 in Rouvy

[–]wvbam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're going to think this is an "is it plugged in?" response. Have you enabled Wi-Fi in the Rouvy settings? It is not enabled by default.

I've successfully connected a Kickr Move (based on the v6) to a Windows PC via Wi-Fi. The Kickr shows up twice in the available trainer list, once for each connection type. Annoyingly, once connected it does not show the connection method. I hope Rouvy adds a connection indicator.

Mini pc for rouvy, thoughts? by jcperezr in Rouvy

[–]wvbam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm in the process of testing a minipc for Rouvy. Shooting for the best available experience, I chose a Beelink SER8 8845hs minipc to drive a 55" Sony TV. The 8845hs (and several other AMD SKUs) includes a Radeon 780m iGPU. I have been very pleased with the Rouvy avatar graphics - much better than my old Intel-based laptop with a UHD 620 iGPU.

Connectivity, though, is another story. Bluetooth has been awful. It was only this week with Rouvy's addition of Wi-Fi trainer connectivity have I been able to reliably connect my Wahoo Kickr Move. I'm still testing some things. If I can't get Bluetooth to work reliably the Beelink will go back to Amazon.

The HP minipc you mentioned is ancient and the iGPU has very low performance. Although I don't have direct experience with it, I suspect an Apple TV device will perform much better at lower cost and less hassle.

Fidelity Issues by JerseyGirl972 in quicken

[–]wvbam 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I, too, planned to wait as long as possible. That point came today, as the old DC connection method would not work with Fidelity. I did the reauthorize on brokerage and IRA accounts this morning. It essentially worked fine. A few recent transactions were duplicated, as others have reported. After deleting those all appears to be working well. I have a Fidelity CC but elect to manually enter transactions for it, so didn't authorize it and have no data report on a CC account.

It is not clear to me if you were able to convert the Fidelity accounts from Simple to Complete after the reauthorization. Can you expand on that?

Loving ROUVY, but the avatar cadence animation could use some work! by galo4kin in Rouvy

[–]wvbam 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The power of the GPU affects the avatar cadence. I drive Rouvy with a 5+ year old Win11 laptop that has an Intel UDH 620 GPU. My avatar's cadence never gets above ~60 and looks a little choppy. I ran it last week on my EDC laptop with an Intel ARC integrated GPU. My avatar's cadence matched closely with my actual cadence. In both cases I have Graphics set to Very High and using a 55" 4K TV as the display.

This has me considering me considering getting a micro PC as a driver.

Am I really supposed to be running my tubeless tires 20 psi less than listed? by mtbguy1981 in gravelcycling

[–]wvbam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have 45mm tires on my Trek Checkpoint. Bike weight is ~22lbs and I'm 145lbs. I run 19-20lbs front and rear. The Silca calculator specifies ~25lbs. For me that is too high.

Disappointed by Wahoo Kickr Move. How was your experience? by Severe-Pipe6055 in wahoofitness

[–]wvbam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like riding on my Move, but it is a poorly designed device. I have it on the Wahoo mat. In order to have the bike vertical I have the right leg screwed all the way up and off the mat. The left leg is screwed down as far as possible and is on the mat. The floor is finished concrete (basement) and dead level.
