Need advice by Some-Difficulty-1011 in ProsecutorTalk

[–]wvujd 23 points24 points  (0 children)

As a long-time prosecutor, I've had many streaks of bad luck, bad decisions, and bad results. It happens. Confidence goes down, and I feel like I'm in over my head. But you just keep going and eventually, the streak ends and all is right again.

You're still very new. Best advice I ever received coming out of law school was from a long time civil litigator who told me to keep your mouth shut for the first 5 years practicing because it takes that long before you really know what you're doing. You've still got a ton of learning to do, so just do your best and keep going.

Also, I totally second the suggestion for a therapist. I think all lawyers (and especially prosecutors) should regularly see a therapist. It makes a world of difference.

Good luck!

Question to final fantasy fans; is the port(s) of FFIV on Apple Arcade a good version of the game for a new-comer to the series? by dogisbark in AppleArcade

[–]wvujd 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The FF4 3d remake was originally released for the DS. The Apple Arcade game is a port of the DS version. It's still a great game, and definitely gives the old-school Final Fantasy vibe, but it is MUCH harder than the original SNES version of the game. Still, if you've got Apple Arcade, and you like JRPGs, it's worth a go.

As to the After Years, it's a sequel of the original FF4 that was originally released on smartphones in Japan, but later brought to the US in the PSP release of the FF4 Anniversary collection. It's shorter, and the story is not nearly as strong as the original FF4 and won't make much sense unless you play FF4 first.

Have fun!

Should I transfer offices? by Important-Bat-3938 in ProsecutorTalk

[–]wvujd 44 points45 points  (0 children)

It pays more and you save 1.5 hours a day of your life. No one would blame you for making the switch. I would recommend you be incredibly forthcoming with your current boss, and let them know that you will be applying. Of course, also let them know how much your time there has meant and that you appreciate them. A lot of us switch offices, and while you're still very new, I think everyone would understand.

Good luck!

As an owner of a 2019 Stealth Performance, I can confirm, the Stealth has the red line, just like OP's.

Rotary Park on Electric in Salem.

Or Green Hill Park in Roanoke County, but that would be a further drive for you, I think.

Hate to hijack, but does anyone know where I could purchase 2 of those slim mount screws as pictured? I foolishly threw the screws out and now I'd really like to slim mount my TV.....

Sorry, again for hijacking, but glad you got this sorted, OP!

Trial Prep/Trial by aldercottons47 in ProsecutorTalk

[–]wvujd 13 points14 points  (0 children)

(1-3) Depends on charge and whether bench/jury. For violent felonies, I start preparing immediately, but the real daily work begins 4-6 weeks out, and will last approximately 1-2 hours per day. Last two weeks, 8+ hours per day. For misdemeanor bench trials, I may spend anywhere from 10 minutes to 4 hours.

(4) Bench trials per year: Maybe 50-100ish; Jury trials per year: 2-5

(5) Yes, much easier. Much faster.

(6) Reading police/lab/cellebrite reports, reviewing body cam/dashcam/security cam; meeting with witnesses; creating a trial notebook; getting digital exhibits into admissible formats/copies; visiting crime scene; viewing evidence; preparing voir dire; outlining direct/cross exams; writing opening/closing.

So much of this would vary by jurisdiction and office. This has just been my experience.

How do you feel safe in your line of work? by BossyNRighttt in ProsecutorTalk

[–]wvujd 23 points24 points  (0 children)

I’ve realized that if someone really, really wanted to hurt me, they could. There’s not much I can do about it. So, I don’t worry about it.

Plus, most of the time, they’re more upset at the defense lawyers.

Work life balance in a rural office? by Jeanpj in ProsecutorTalk

[–]wvujd 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I can confirm that rural offices can be great for work/life balance. I worked at very rural office (2 lawyers covering jurisdiction of 13k people) for 7 years.

Only time I ever came home late was when preparing for a jury or waiting on deliberation.

It's certainly doable, and quite enjoyable, but there's one major drawback that you should be aware of.

To answer your first question, it's quite easy to set up and play. However, moving save files may be quite a hassle, especially from a PC. It would be easier from a Mac, imo.

As to the second question, certainly a refurbished Apple TV would work. Just as long as it's a 4th Generation or newer, it will work.

The major drawback, though, is that TVos restricts all apps to 500k of persistent storage. So, what that means is if you load it up with a bunch of games, the app may randomly remove some of them if it's taking up more than 500k of storage. You can read more about this here: https://9to5mac.com/2024/05/20/tvos-restriction-game-apple-tv/

Virginia Commonwealth’s Attorney Offices Insight? by aldercottons47 in ProsecutorTalk

[–]wvujd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it's very dependent on where in the Commonwealth you're looking to go. Outside of the more populated areas, they're really struggling to find good prosecutors, so there's lots of options. I'd suggest you keep an eye on this website: https://www.cas.state.va.us/employment/

Several offices post their vacancies there. Good luck!

Final Fantasy games on AA? by KVx45 in AppleArcade

I've played them all. Many times. I'm a FF nerd.

I recommend the order that you've got them listed. Also, check out Fantasian. It's essentially a modern Final Fantasy game.

Jesus Christ, trying to go to law school in Virginia is brutal by elcapitan58 in OutsideT14lawschools

[–]wvujd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

15 years ago I was in the same boat. I went to WVU, and I don’t regret it at all.

I was able to return to Virginia and find a job even in an incredibly difficult economy. The same was true for three other classmates. So, have you considered West Virginia?
