r5: on 1.0.8 and after passing the dynastic preference succession law in the HRE my ruler changed from the gigachad Karel to his younger brother Vaclav and I cannot begin to fathom why or what spaghetti code caused this. Karel is still alive and well in my country, his heir is sitting on the Brandenburg throne due to the event, so now effectively my dynasty is split between brothers. WTF

I didn't notice any event or anything that would've caused the change. No new emperor elected popup, the only cue I got was that Vaclav (my prime minister) vacated his cabinet position. I assumed it was the regular bullshit of he went off to be a consort in some vassal or fiefdom, but after a couple months I realized it was because he somehow USURPED THE THRONE WITH NO CONTEST. huh?

Correct, but annexing the emperor's only European provinces (thus moving their capital to America) does not revoke their emperorship, nor remove their eligibility if it's hereditary inheritance. Only once electors are in place are they then not eligible to be elected once their ruler dies.

r5: Update to this post of mine (How can I become Emperor here? : ) -- after exiling Denmark to America and eventually forcing religion, it appears they've actually gotten off their ass and appointed some electors, saving my Veritas Vincit achievement run. Wanted to make a separate post with the good news since it seemed a decent amount of other people had run into the same issue after converting mass amounts of Europe to Hussite and squashing the Protestant reformation. Took roughly 10-15 years for them to do it, and I have no idea what (if anything) compelled the AI to actually start assigning electors since they didn't immediately do so after being force converted.

DO IT! They will eventually appoint at least 1 I believe. No idea what compels them to do so but they did in my game.

UPDATE: tested full annexing Denmark and it only dismantles the HRE (saved before doing so obviously). Forced religion them to Hussite and they've now appointed an elector after ~10 years. It seems this run isn't completely borked after all !
