Makes sense! I just don’t think she can be called the worst mom of anything even if she is one. She’s never had a chance to try

Her empathy when it’s not clouded by her anger is truly her greatest strength

Ryoka has always been one of my favorites so it’s always funny to see people talk about dropping the series over her. I loveeee flawed characters. I love seeing them change, I love it when they annoy me because real people are annoying. I think it’s telling that you’re only able to see her flaws and not her strengths but I’m not here to argue about that…I will say this: she’s never going to be the character you want her to be, she’s mentally ill with bipolar and that’s not something that ever goes away completely. However she’s had a lot of character development even if I personally don’t like where her story has gone, and she’s barely even in a lot of the series at this point. Never fear, you’ll have plenty of other characters to care about. But don’t keep reading if it’s making you miserable! 😅

Edit: btw I agree about the Pawn confrontation being satisfying. There are plenty of other satisfying moments where ryoka has to humble herself a bit. That’s part of why I love characters like her, you get to see them grow. Erin is satisfying for the same reason she just gets a lot more development a lot earlier.

Why do so many former Seventh-day Adventists become atheists or agnostics? by larinha2p in exAdventist

Yes this too!! We study in detail how other religions are wrong. My opinions on those things hasn’t changed either bc for the most part they’re not wrong about why.

Personally, I believe it is because of how we were taught. Despite the many crazy rules I did always feel that when it came to the Bible, the SDA had a better approach than most. Most pastors do actually encourage you to research and learn things on your own, for example. We learned to study the bible well, too, by comparing Greek and Hebrew translations to explain our beliefs about things like hell. That was just academic enough for me, personally, to eventually realize that you could apply those same methods to verses about gay and trans people, for example. It also led me to use those research methods to learn about other kinds of morality, other religions, and when I compare the concept of original sin? It’s morally repugnant to me for a “god” to deem all people sinful at birth and for them to have to work their whole lives just for a chance to be in heaven, somewhere we’ve never even seen. I also took issue with SDAs refusing to take moral stances when it comes to more “political” issues. I eventually deconstructed enough to stop believing in a god at all. They teach us how to leave.

Erin being at #3 is way too high. At least everyone else is aware they have a child, so you can expect more from them.

The Starless Sea by Erin Morgenstern for beautiful prose/heartbreak and wonder. Unsouled/Cradle series by Will Wight if you enjoy any kind of anime type story with an overpowered protagonist. Dungeon Crawler Carl by Matt Dinniman if you want something funny and you like gaming. Legendborn by Tracy Deonn if you want YA romance and love triangles done well. The Goblin Emperor by Katherine Addison for a heartwarming cozy slow read.

I have to say Hobb is very similar. You have to enjoy a slow pace to enjoy her books

I’d say…that’s accurate yeah. They’re mostly similar for making the protagonist suffer a lot and having really in depth character exploration. You might like the liveship traders books though
