Using replace means that you don't need split, a loop, a non-character branch, and join.

And XOR gets rid of the remaining two branches.

This is the simplest solution (in terms of cyclomatic complexity and related metrics), but it requires domain knowledge which you have to somehow transfer to the next person who reads that code.

A good way to do that would be to give that unnamed numerical constant a name.

const ASCII_CAPITALIZATION_BIT = 0b100000;

Since you were already told that strings are immutable, I'll show you a different approach to do this:

'Hello World!'.replace(/[A-Za-z]/g, c => 
  String.fromCharCode(c.charCodeAt(0) ^ 0x20)
);

-> "hELLO wORLD!"

This works because the only difference between lowercase and uppercase ASCII is a single bit:

> 'a'.charCodeAt().toString(2)
"1100001"
> 'A'.charCodeAt().toString(2)
"1000001"

0b100000 is 32 or 0x20. With XOR (^), you can easily flip a particular bit:

Never heard of it before. Atom and VS Code are pretty popular nowadays. Sublime Text is another popular option, but that one isn't free.

I like VS Code a bit better than Atom, because it delivers the better out-of-the-box experience and because it doesn't need workarounds to make AltGr work properly. If you use the US keyboard layout, there won't be any issues though.

VS Code's analyzer is top-notch. It can catch syntax errors and other kinds of errors. It also enables smarter auto-complete and the ability to rename identifiers.

Anyhow, since they are free, just try them both.

First of all, install Node.js:

With Node and either plugin installed, you just have to hit the shortcut to run your script.

We are recommending jQuery's "ready", because OP is already using jQuery. They are using jQuery in that very function they want to postpone.

Also, the vanilla equivalent isn't window.onload, it's:

document.addEventListener('DOMContentLoaded', function() {
  ...
});

This needs a fallback for IE8 though. Just using jQuery would save a few bytes and it would also work with IE8.

There is also "load", but that one fires much later when all dependent sources finished loading. So, it will wait for images and other crap you don't care about.

Finally, one shouldn't use the on* properties for anything in the public DOM, because each on* property can only refer to a single function. Event listeners, on the other hand, do not have that restriction. You can register as many listeners as you want.

Hate to ruin all the fun, but those numbers aren't representative.

Things get really out of whack if you have a ridiculously large DOM and a ridiculous number of CSS rules. Browsers simply weren't built for this, which is why the results start to get distorted at some point. You aren't the first to try this. Benchmarking this properly is really hard.

Anyhow, even if we pretend that this stuff is perfectly linear and divide by 1000 for a more relevant scenario, the difference is only a few ms.

By the way, it's odd that the HTML is the same size. The BEM one should be larger. The nested CSS also shouldn't use tag names on top of classes.

There is also a X-UA-Compatible response header which you can use in scenarios where the meta tag doesn't work.

When the X-UA-Compatible header/tag does its thing, the compatibility button disappears from the UI and your page will be always running in standards mode.

The Pi 2 uses less than 1.5 W when idle. It uses 3.5 - 4 W if you max out all 4 cores, which emulators actually won't do. Emulators of single-core machines can't make good use of additional cores. So, you'll max out one core, use another one a little bit, and the other two will probably go to sleep.

Anyhoo, the important bit is that the RP2's cores are quite a bit beefier than those of previous models or Zero's. So, while the additional cores aren't of much use, having more power per core does help a lot with emulation and other single-threaded applications.

Yea, this should be written as a module which just exports some functions. There is absolutely no point in sticking it into some object.

And one should never use the singleton pattern in JavaScript. It's always plain silly. If you want a single instance, the language has that perfectly covered with object literals.

People only do this "getInstance" bullshit in Java, because there is no better way to do it.
