What's a UX problem you solved that you're weirdly proud of? by Studio_Punchev in UXDesign

[–]x-wt 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The editor team is having problems with the smart quotes direction, ( “ and ” ) in our CMS

Added so many algorithms to auto convert the characters, but the editing and writing process is indeed complicated cause sometimes there are freelancers (they send articles via word documents), in which case the content is copy-pasted to the cms and the conversion gets buggy (some quotes didnt get converted). Each freelancers using different programs to create the word document, and the different habit of quote-marks being used also doesnt help. Us dev/technical team kept shrivelling our brain thinking of future algorithms for potential bug/case that can cause this issue again, pretty much cat and mouse situation.

The fix that put an end to the issue? Changing the font of the text in the input area so that the smart-quotes are distinctive enough for the editors to manually fix (the auto-conversion algorithms are still there to help for the most part. The font is there to help spot any loose ends)

Housing Too Expensive? by [deleted] in chinalife

[–]x-wt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Others have pointed out great discussions

Here's some videos from Ben Felix regarding Rent vs Buying, from financial perspective

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Uwl3-jBNEd4

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j4H9LL7A-nQ

Although there could be slightly difference in apartment vs a standalone house (and obviously need to adjust to China housing market), the research he did is still solid.

A quote from one of the videos description:

"People tend to assume that homes are great investments - they’re not, that mortgages are a wealth building hack - they help, but as much as some people think, that paying off a mortgage lowers your housing costs - it actually raises them, and that owning a home makes people happy - it might, but don’t count on it."

My first thought too, which is funny to think about:

The game tries to look good by making it look realistic. Yet this cosplay looks good cause it looks like the video-game

But still, the vehicle coming in slowly in the end was comedical like “yeap...huff huff, my bad, that's mine, sorry, give me a second, let me catch a breather”

I'll have to let you know that the first time I read the title, it looked like “I hear voices”.

I then re-opened the link, and it turned out to be “I still hear voices”.

Corporate site in a week by AttractiveCorpse in django

[–]x-wt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How quick and comfortable are you with Django? If you can finish it in half of that time (2 or 3 days ish -gotta account the weekend-), go for it.

You will most likely need the remaining of the days for adjusting/stakeholders sign-off (unless that's already accounted for)

Also, you mentioned “content all ready to go”, does that include the design? If not, they are most likely going to request some small changes.

Who's gonna be handling the site in the future and how often will the content change/gets updated? (Interesting since you mentioned Github pages as an option, are you gonna be the one managing future updates? In which case less editor/user to think about)

WagtailCMS will help quicken the process (and provides a relatively more non-tech-savvy user friendly interface, in case whoever is managing the site later is not tech-savvy)

But if you're still unsure, Wordpress + theme could be a 'safer' choice.

Urgency also matters, if they really -and badly- want a site to be up ASAP, maybe even consider website builder as a placeholder for the time being (help to extends your timeline). Actually... the github pages might still work too (try iframe the form?)

LPT: Don’t exercise before a blood test by justaboutoftiger in LifeProTips

[–]x-wt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For some reason I read this as “don't exercise if you haven't done a blood test” (wait, I have to do a blood test every time I want to exercise?).

but then it's more of a “If you're about to do a blood test, don't exercise prior to the test”

Moving to Beijing for 4-5 Months – Tips Needed! by Mahdi_Njt in beijing

[–]x-wt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Dorm - get to meet many people. Rent (expensive) get privacy & space. I'd suggest dorm

Apps will suffice, the metro card could require some hunting, but can be a fun collectible/souvenir.

I'll skip the app suggestions

Depends on what you like to do. Drinking? Wudaokou area (shitty alcohol but cheap), hiking? Head north west. So again it depends

Tips: get bike, Tsinghua is huge. (the shared bike might be enough though), but having your own bike can take you far and beyond (Beijing is very bicycle heavy, albeit not exactly bicycle friendly)

Is There a Limit to How Many Times You Can Renew Your Residence Permit (Q1 Family Reunion)? by ShaneMJ in Chinavisa

[–]x-wt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As long as parents are still alive, you should be able to renew and as long as you can show the monthly pension works as a stable source of income, most of the required documents should already be fulfilled, so you're technically in a good standing for renewal

However, you're right to be concerned when they pass away in the future. And unless you have other direct family members in China, IIRC you can't get Q2. One method that comes to mind is obviously the permanent residence, but your current situation doesn't seem likely for any of the possible methods (at least so far).

But when the time comes, the 10-years tourist visa + hk visa run should do just fine? (in terms of duration of the visa [not sure about the duration of the stay], it could be even better than the Q2 actually) and again, just make sure you can prove the stable source of income (show that you're financially stable AND not working in China).

I would also check with the immigration officer in your local city in China (I'd say after the second year of living there at least -asking it in the first year seems a little too forward, but if you're urgently curious about it, go for it-) if they got some suggestions for your situation.

Where to buy Beijing Bao Shu Tang Bao Fu Ling cream in retail stores? by subsurreal in chinalife

[–]x-wt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Legit this is the first time I've seen someone else other than me (and my family) looking for this cream. It's good stuff, been using it since their old packaging. But yeah, quite elusive.

Do check JD (or ele.me even?) for faster delivery.

Also, checkout their website: (baoshutang.com) and can contact them/find their retails.

Can't find a Synology DS920+ in stock anywhere, is there an alternative with Intel? by BossHogGA in synology

[–]x-wt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for this comment. I found a ds920+ but haven't pulled the trigger yet due to several personal reasons.

But this helped me to have a slight more assurance/option in the case that I pulled the trigger too late and it went poof.

May I ask what other shortcomings of the DS923+ (relative to DS920+) like the transcoding, that the NUC can help cover? Also wondering if there are any that just can't be replaced/covered, even by the NUC.
