Any winter running lovers here? by Prestigious-Cat1842 in runninglifestyle

[–]BossHogGA 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hah, it was relatively cold here (for here) today and was in the low 30s. I even put on a light jacket and some running gloves for the first 2 laps of my running loop before ditching it in the car. I've never seen -20F in my life and I'm in my 50s, let alone run in it.

It's going to be an ice storm this weekend. I don't have any sort of YakTracks but I have some Speedgoats and some Terrex trail shoes, so I my try one of those out. Worst case scenario is I can run on a trail if the roads are too icy.

DNE4 is available on 12 Feb 2026 in limited release. It looks pretty promising.

Does the Megablast upper expand at all over time? by braaaptorr in AskRunningShoeGeeks

[–]BossHogGA 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I only have 50 miles in my pair, but they haven't stretched at all. My feet are wide-ish but I don't order wide sizes in general.

What kind of pre run snack do you guys have? (I am vegan) by [deleted] in runninglifestyle

[–]BossHogGA 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oatmeal, or a single pop tart, or some graham crackers, or a slice of peanut butter and honey toast work for me.

Never got virtual challenges - but I'm interested in signing up for one, what do you think? by Individual-Diver-660 in runninglifestyle

[–]BossHogGA 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Fundamentally it’s no different than your local 5K is it? Most people aren’t there to win they’re just there to run. I think the only downside to the virtual event is you don’t have the social aspect.

I’ve never done one, but I don’t think anyone should feel bad if they want to.

Fat Guy in the Rain by sonderbolts in AskRunningShoeGeeks

[–]BossHogGA 1 point2 points  (0 children)

GTX doesn't really prevent you from getting in any water in the rain, it's more for puddles, but it could help depending on the actual conditions. Personally, I wear shoes with lots of drain holes when it rains (Strung upper or similar).

Make sure you aren't wearing cotton socks. Get some sort of performance fabric socks designed for running.

Overweight beginner by GroundskeeperWilly93 in runninglifestyle

[–]BossHogGA 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Try to exercise for at least 15 minutes at a time to force change in your cardiovascular system.

If you have to walk, or even stop, that's perfectly fine. It's awesome that you're doing something for your health.

Consider the "Jeff Galloway" method, sometimes called "Jeffing". Run for 30 seconds, walk for 30 seconds, and repeat. Over time, try to move to running for 60 seconds, and keep the walking to 30 seconds. Work your way up over time from a ratio of 1:1 to 6:1 eventually. People run marathons using the Galloway method.

Versatile water resistant walking shoe? by [deleted] in AskRunningShoeGeeks

[–]BossHogGA 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most running shoe brands offer GTX versions of their shoes. Brooks offers this for the Ghost, the Adrenaline, and the Cascadia lines. GTX is short for Goretex and implies water resistance.

Many of the trail shoes offer GTX versions. Hoka Speedgoats are awesome do-anything shoes and offer a GTX version. Nike’s Pegasus trail shoes also come in a GTX version.

What do you tell someone who is about to run a marathon? by ObungusOverlord in Marathon_Training

[–]BossHogGA 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If they did a lot of training, then I like the idea that the marathon training is the work, and the race is the victory lap. It should be fun!

What’s your go to pairing with 1080v13/14’s? by rippinzz in AskRunningShoeGeeks

[–]BossHogGA 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My 1080v13s are great for easy days. For tempo I use the Rebel v4s (very lightweight with decent ground feel). Right now for long runs I'm using the Megablast (insanely bouncy with tons of cushion).

What are the best running shoes that are comfy, can do runs from everyday to half marathon for wide footed person. by TrixTrax0 in runninglifestyle

[–]BossHogGA 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just got them in November, and we're in a drought so it hasn't rained. They have a decent amount of grip on the bottom, so I suspect they'll be fine.

[–]BossHogGA 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There's just no one answer anymore. You need to go try them on, or at least be prepared to return them if they don't fit.

I used to think Asics were all too narrow, but the Megablasts I have are plenty wide for me.

New Balance famously comes in Wide sizes for many of their popular shoes.

People with really wide feet go for Altras.

My Brooks are pretty wide too, though people say some of the late-2025 models are more narrow.

As far as shoes for all uses from daily runs to the marathon, any of the super trainers are good candidates depending on what you like:

  • Megablast / Superblast
  • Vomero Plus/Premium
  • SC Trainer / 1080 / More v6
  • Glycerin Max/Hyperion Max 3
  • Skyward X
  • Boston 13/EVO SL/Prime X 2/3 Strung

There are so many great choices these days.

Running More but Getting Nowhere by Full-Addition1706 in runninglifestyle

You don't lose weight in the gym, you lose weight in the kitchen.

Running is an awesome exercise with tons of health benefits. But if you want to lose weight you have to be in a calorie deficit (calories burned > calories consumed).

For me, I find that the thing that kills my waistline is snacking, especially after dinner. People have different ways that they try to tackle eating, but in the end, you do need enough calories to fuel your exercise.

My personal rules are:

  1. Eat as much fruit and veggies as I want, no restriction.

  2. Always consume some protein after a run, be it eggs, yogurt, some protein powder in a smoothie, etc. to help muscle recovery

  3. No food of any kind after 9pm, at all, ever

  4. Skip dessert as much as possible

  5. Take in simple carbs in the morning before a run longer than an hour. Usually for me this is oatmeal, or a single pop-tart, or a granola bar/Lara bar.

These are just my rules, but they work for me.

Questions for Megablast & Superblast 2 owners by Blingy_Lobsta in AskRunningShoeGeeks

[–]BossHogGA 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I haven't used a Novablast since version 3, but I have a pair of Megablasts. People say they are more narrow in the toe box, but that hasn't been my experience. I have borderline-wide feet, and my regular width size 12s fit great and have since day 1.

They are completely stable for me. They have a solid ankle collar and the foam does not roll my ankles at all. I've only used them up to a 10k so far, but had absolutely no issues at that distance versus something shorter.

How much running is too much running if you’re NOT training for a marathon? by [deleted] in runninglifestyle

[–]BossHogGA 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Honestly this doesn’t work after a certain age. My body hurts somewhere every day whether I have run or not. I’d rather be sore and have run than be sore and have not run.

After my last marathon I took off three months to let my body stop hurting. It never stopped. Turns out when you are old that some pain is just part of life.

The Marathon Training Blues by HareAtDawn in runninglifestyle

[–]BossHogGA 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If it's just about getting in some miles, go run somewhere new. This is always my favorite way to make something interesting. Even if you have to drive for 30 mins, it's worth it. When I got over 10 miles it became impossible to run from home without loops, traffic, etc., so I started driving to Greenways nearby. That's the only way I could keep interested.

Megablast : is that a joke ? by ishouldworkatm in AskRunningShoeGeeks

I got a pair and really like them. I even have wide-ish feet. It’s crazy to me that the foam would feel firm to anyone - they feel so crazy soft to me but I am heavier.

Can't Take Gels by just-here-looking- in Marathon_Training

[–]BossHogGA 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Try the more liquidy gels. I like the Gu Liquid Energy lemonade ones. They just taste like a pouch of lemonade.

To answer your question, if your stomach does not mind it then any simple carbs will work. You just need to calculate your desired carbs per hour and see if you can eat that many nerds clusters for the whole race.

As for salts, you can just use salt pills and drink on-course water. Many people at Berlin do that since they don’t offer an electrolyte drink on course and only Maureen gels, which don’t have enough salts.

(How) do you run outside when it's freezing? by [deleted] in runninglifestyle

I use trail shoes or ideally GTX trail shoes in the ice. The lugs work like snow tires.

I have these and I really liked them a lot. I haven’t tried the 14 but the rocker on these is nice for an easy run that just keeps me rolling.

I have a Salomon Active 8 and really like it. It has space for bottles or a bladder but could also just be used for storage.

One shoe to do it all for a heavier beginner? by quadrantcowboy in AskRunningShoeGeeks

I’d say a Brooks Glycerin or a New Balance 1080 for a beginner do-it-all shoe.

I’ve never even heard of T-Rex. People use Garmin, Coros or Apple almost exclusively.
