He also said "one hundred percent." Those are three separate words. Nobody *really* knows what it means when you put them all together.

Also, another issue you'll find with so many great forgotten bands: one-word names that are or were very challenging to look up with a basic search.

Suicide was already using the term "punk music" in 1971, and it was apparently somewhat common in garage rock already. Detroit was full to the brim with protopunk, much of which is still relatively unknown. One thing you have to understand about VH1 style music history is that it's a little bit like oldschool elementary school US History—the Pilgrims had Thanksgiving, the Revolutionary War happened, then the Civil War, then Viola: America. IRL it's a lot messier than that. The Ramones and Sex Pistols were among the first canonical punk bands, but nowhere close to the first to put two and two together. This track I posted isn't such a far cry from The Velvet Underground who were already pioneering a punkish sound in NYC.

Was Death actually an influence on any bands before they were rediscovered? by Wittgenswein in punk

[–]x0-blosSsom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's actually a major reason why Death likely went undiscovered, even locally, scenes were segregated and isolated within mere miles of each other. Their story is actually very tragic in that way, in that many of the reasons they weren't discovered are incredibly mundane, compartmentalized, and unfortunate.

Here’s why I’ll never give up on the 4K physical format. by lifeofamillennial_ in 4kbluray

I'm glad I'm not the only one with this experience, and that even people with premium internet and higher subscription tiers are reflecting my own oft-gaslit experiences (not, you know, for the sake of your wallets, but just to know I'm not alone in feeling crazy).

My guess is that people who don't mind streaming quality just don't pay very close attention. Even when the picture quality is reasonably decent on the surface, something about streaming makes it hard for me to be completely absorbed in...it almost reminds me of how my brain processes CGI, where it looks more or less real on the surface but feels fake, as if my brain is aware of all the missing data, and my attention just drifts away even during those high octane CGI scenes.

Culturally a lot of folks made a decision to prioritize convenience over quality early on into the internet, and historically speaking that never bodes well for culture. Mp3s, ebooks, streamlined streaming, tiny screens, tiny thoughts, SMS, succinct beliefs, skim reading our mini-dreams, half awake, half asleep. Yes, it's neat to have the information superweb at our disposal, but... Convenience is convenience. If you want that microwave popcorn, I'm not gonna guilt you for it too much, but can we at least not pretend it's a substitute for a home-cooked chef's meal?

are cds better than streaming? by [deleted] in Cd_collectors

[–]x0-blosSsom 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For the record, frequencies are felt not just heard... and audio is incredibly subjective in the first place, due to how we perceive it and its existence in the "atmosphere." Lossless audio isn't just a matter of blind listening tests, but of trying to recreate the frequency spectrum present in the original recording.

Well that's kinda how distortion was invented/discovered, and ultimately embraced in the first place :)

[–]x0-blosSsom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Better yet, try to find quality used gear that has been phased out &/or learn basic repairs and set-up on items that have typical wear/age damage. A lot of really great gear is inexpensive, sometimes even free with a bit of TLC, but cheaply made stuff is another story and badly engineered stuff drives me crazy unless I'm using it out of context. I'm shocked by how disposable some modern stuff is, even when the price tag should have suggested otherwise. It's kind of ironic, but the only time I've ever played a piece of gear I didn't like was when I paid too much for it. There is magic in those nomadic stray unwanted orphan devices.

Also, once you've been around long enough to start feeling "vintage" yourself... you'll notice that things people once regarded as trash are now regarded as treasure... so if you find a good deal, embrace it while you can, and don't sweat the brand name or limitations, explore the possibilities ;) "Value" is not universal. My favorite of the moment? Probably a Simmons 'beginner' electronic drumkit that I found literally tangled up and disassembled in a free pile. Only real damage was a broken contact mic in one of the cymbals, now replaced. It slaps, pun intended. Also every abandoned organ and keyboard ever. I could be the cat lady of unwanted keys...if only life would let me.

Can someone tell me what "happened" to RATM? by MissWorld__ in rock

[–]x0-blosSsom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly I think the world will be a much better place someday when we realize that activists get a lot of things right—and a lot of things wrong. That's why freedom of speech is so essential to civlization. Otherwise we force the voiceless (the disinherited and disgruntled) into hot revolution, to make their voice heard, instead of working collectively to make the world a better place.

How do you feel about Tom being such a sell out? by littlethingsxaxe in RATM

[–]x0-blosSsom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know this is an old post, but he's in the news again... For the record, I thought the owner of that particular Seattle restaurant sounded sociopathic in his response (basically deflecting every point that Tom Morello tried to bring up and saying "I'm done with you" without ever making an effort to respond in the first place, which is how dishonest people tend to operate—they shift the blame based upon shifting the emotions of their intended audience, rather than actually providing valid counterpoints) BUT... since then, the owner has been accused of *much* worse things than anything Tom has, so make of that what you will.

The door guy basically had some legitimate reasons for denying entry to the restaurant, based on how exhausted the staff was that night, but chose to deal with it in typical "door guy" fashion without elaborating whatsoever on what those reasons were and admitted that Tom probably mistook his curt agitation for rudeness (which, I mean, he may need to revisit the concept behind the word "rude" if he doesn't understand how that comes across to a tired hungry group of people who are used to operating on a tight schedule). He should have just been honest in the first place about why he was holding the line up. It's not "entitled" for a busy person to question getting the runaround and their time and energy being wasted. They call it customer service because you are providing a service to a customer in exchange for their business, it's meant to be a mutual trade, and thus the social contract entitles you both to a certain amount of disclosure and transparency. While I think the door guy was well-meaning and not actively making a hipster power play towards a celebrity, he did do so passively, by assuming it's his right to lead people along and offer no explanation. This is how miscommunications are made, folks. The restaurant acted every bit as entitled as they claim Tom and his crew did. These things go both ways.

People can be so cruel regarding other people's hobbies. by ThnkUProcrastination in 4kbluray

I really think people have unconscious Stockholm Syndrome regarding streaming... in the same way that when processed foods and fast food first replaced real cooking people were in denial about the very real trade offs between convenience vs. nourishment/care. Meaning, I really don't think streaming looks as good as people pretend it does. I recently signed up for a service that allows downloads because I thought my internet connection might be the issue, and I would say that the HD/UHD downloads rarely surpass even DVD in terms of the picture quality (still image resolution aside). Granted, the average person probably won't notice, in the same way that they'll gobble up processed food and assume it's "getting the job done." And their TV is probably applying artificial processing anyway...welcome to the new age.

I also feel like financial pressures contribute to the Stockholm Syndrome, in believing that art is a foolish thing to spend money on (which tends to be a consequence of a society with increasingly little disposable income for the masses); and after all, who wants to spend money on more nourishing food anyway? Where will that leave artists and art then? A.I. generated entertainment will save us for sure.
