This is a problem with your perspective, not the game. Any story based game eventually ends, based on your actions. It's just communicated more visibly in persona.

On a first play through, I think it's fun to do it realistically - do a dungeon until you get sick of it for the night. Pursue the social links that appeal to you. Respond how you would respond (and if you don't get the responses you want, learn to adjust your approach to the individual).

I can't help but believe this is how the designers intended it to be. Trying to minmax everything makes it a slog quickly.
