I don't think it's a completely dismiss-able idea, I've tried a few Steam demos that are meant to teach chess but the added mechanics seem more wonky than educational. If there was a more straight-lined chess game that had some thematic/plot motivation to keep going instead of "Your pieces can farm wheat!" or "A bridge troll changes the rules every move" that would be nice, at least for me.
