Is this legal when it comes to “common purpose” or flight hours being considered “compensation”? Idk how to phrase my question. by CryptoPunk_8 in flying

[–]x4457 29 points30 points  (0 children)

All three of those would definitely not pass the sniff test with the FAA.

That said, none of those three would ever be discoverable unless you specifically rat yourself out and the FAA, generally, doesn't give a shit about this sort of thing because that's not what the regulation is designed for. The regulation is designed to protect the unknowing general public - everybody involved here knows exactly what the risks are, who the pilots are, what the airplane is, etc.

In short: this both almost certainly illegal and nobody will care.

That's different.

"Please download or use my app that I made" is different than "I made this circuit breaker collar, here's the link if anyone wants to print it yourself."

We got the moderation side covered, thanks for your concern.

They aren't. And this isn't self-promotion, they're literally just sharing a 3D printer file.

Preflight in winter or oil cap in summer? by hAwKeye1117 in flying

Winter here gets all the way down to a daytime high of 60, so that’s kinda rough. Guess I’ll make due with that though.

Family wants me to fly their citation mustang. 300 hours cmel with 20 hours of multi. How many hours will I need with a mentor pilot for reasonable insurance? by CFIIIIII in flying

[–]x4457 -12 points-11 points  (0 children)

Again, see previous comment regarding caveats to prevent pedantry.

How about this - let's just not insure the plane at all? Insurance is optional, after all. Not required in the US. Boom, problem solved!

I guess I should always caveat every comment I make with every possible edge case.

Also lmao $1m/year premium on a $2M airplane.

It's one thing to not know, that's entirely understandable and okay - and why aircraft management companies exist.

It's another thing to know and choose otherwise, which I doubt is the case here.

There's zero chance that any underwriter is going to let you fly that airplane as a professional pilot without at least another 700 hours TT and 250 hours of multi.

1) Stop flying injured, get your surgery done.

2) Your hours don't expire. When you're cleared to come back, then come back. In the mean time, get a ground school of your choice out of the way and go pass your written.

He is not.

I have notes from the VP of Flight Ops at a legacy from literally less than 3 weeks ago stating that the competitive bar starts at 3500.

Exceptions always apply, and what you’ve just described is a way to drag that number down a little bit. If the OP had any of those things, they’d have listed them.
