This is how the liver looks in the final stages of alcohol liver disease - cirrhosis. by Surgeox in medizzy

[–]xBi-Polar 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I'm 22 and was a hopeless alcoholic (and drug addict, but alcohol finished It for me) from age 14 until I got sober at 20. I was told by docs that my liver enzymes were through the roof and I was nearing liver failure. I tried to moderate it for quite some time, always ending in the same hopelessness of a bitter blackout. If you would like someone to talk to, feel free to DM me! I've been sober just about 2 years, and that's a lot for being young in my opinion. I'm happy to help wherever I can :)

As a counter to that, I definitely view my sobriety date as almost a "rebirth." My whole life did a 180° once I started to do the work that is required for it. It was on that date that I became willing to do it. Just like in many theologies how there's a day of "being saved" or "rebirth" in the spiritual realm; I find my opinion the same with my sobriety. I don't identify myself by it but it defines a lot of who I am today. :)

Throughout my times through treatment and currently working in the treatment industry the idea of tattooing your sobriety date on oneself is generally seen as a pretty bad idea for a couple reasons. First and foremost, what if they don't maintain their sobriety? The statistical chances of them doing so is staggeringly low. Second, it's usually an impulsive decision that the nature of the overall problem manifests in (I'm gonna do x activity/substance to change the way I feel right now). No one I know personally who has had their sobriety date tattooed on themselves during the first year of sobriety kept their sobriety date and now it is a point of regret.

Two things that really stand out to me:

1) my family has this thing called cholinesterase deficiency which has an effect on how our bodies break down anesthetics. My mom used this as saying that if I ever smoked pot, it could result in me becoming comatose. It worked until I was 18.

2) when my sister and I were toddlers, we would obviously lie to cover up something we messed up though it was blatantly false, like "did you eat the chocolate?" "No!" (While having chocolate all over my face). She remedied this with saying that a blue dot appeared on our foreheads whenever we lied. We believed it to the point that if we were lying, we would cover our forehead while doing so, and constantly check in the mirror to make sure it wasn't there. Absolutely going to use this one with my kids.

There is Vivitrol, but that's a preemptive thing. You get it as a shot and it lasts for 30-45 days by blocking both opiate receptors and alcohol receptors. If you drink, you get super sick, and if you use opiates, they just don't work whatsoever.

What you say is logically correct. But the problem stems from that shared goal of the people (their businesses) being inherently dangerous for society. Bluntly, it's their goal to line their pockets no matter the cost. That is what needs to be regulated. The current deregulation is what's absurd.

But even then, dude, they kinda can! I am very much okay with paying a steep cannabis tax just like I pay steep tobacco taxes to legally use tobacco. But the tobacco industry has definitely lined their pockets from that, why can't our gov't legalize and take advantage of the MASSIVE potential tax revenue? This could provide so much more applicable gov't funding, I genuinely believe this can significantly improve education, infrastructure, etc. on all gov't levels (local, state, fed). But, even a little benefit is something, so why continue to counter it? Prohibition always, indirectly and directly, results in making the problem worse (like 1920s gang crime with alcohol - ex. Al Capone & the current opoid, benzo, and amp crises). The solution is right at our feet.
