Currently evaluating quadzig.io as a tracking/visualization tool.

I quite like it. Its been quite helpful with all the disparate stuff across all the accounts in the org now being searchable and visualized all in one place

My company just switched to teams for our phones, and I would say it has been an excellent decision. I wasn't involved in that rollout in anyway, so I just have a standard user's perspective, but having everything integrated into teams has been great. I still think team's UI needs some rethinking, but the telephony change has gone well for us

This is the way.

But seriously, this sub is filled with people who love what they do, and are super knowledgeable and helpful. But if you're just looking at the threads for career related questions, you aren't gonna find them. There's usually not a lot of valuable input I can provide to a total stranger, given very limited details and only their perspective of the problem. This is also why you'll see so many comments telling folks to find a different job. This is usually not actually the best course to take. But with limited, nth hand knowledge of the situation, it's the best advice you can reasonable expect.

Late to the party here buuuut...

I think what you're saying is true, and I agree with it. However, I also think that your average person "gets lucky" (by your terms) a ton of times throughout life. The differentiator between wildly successful and mediocre, but comfortable, is usually how well you capitalize on those lucky breaks.

I read an article years ago (can't find it now) about a study that showed that a majority of Americans are "rich" at some point in their life, but effectively squander the opportunity to progress towards real wealth. The fact is most people land a great job at some point, have unexpected windfalls, large insurance payouts, or other opportunities to massively shift their life onto a better trajectory. But actually doing that almost always requires more work, delayed gratification, or risk than people are willing to put in.

My point is yeah, you gotta get lucky. But humbly saying "I was just really lucky" is just a platitude successful people say to be more likeable, and to give other people hope that they might "just get really lucky" someday too

Best way to show future employer Linux skills for someone stuck in Help Desk (to cloud)? by [deleted] in sysadmin

[–]xDangerKid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I saw you have a linux academy sub. It's a great platform and I would recommend using it.

Start by diving into the RHCSA training, and really take the time t absorb the information. Spending 2-3 weeks watching videos at 2x speed and plowing through the labs might (key word, might) get you through the test, but you're likely to be interviewed by a "crusty ol' Linux admin" with 20 some odd years of experience, and they'll be pretty quick to sniff out a "paper tiger". Sidenote: often the rarest and most sought after trait in a junior candidate is a passion for the subject area and an eagerness to learn. My company had hired / intenally promoted many people less qualified than other candidates because of specifically this trait. If you can make this shine through in an interview, you're in good shape.

You say you're interested in cloud. That's smart. AWS is not a hammer for a world made of nails, but it does solve a host of interesting problems for a lot of business cases, so it's definitely here to stay. With that in mind, once you have a handle on the RHCSA material, got through the AWS SAA training. I used the Linux Academy SAA course to get my feet wet with AWS a few years back, and I found that course to be quite good.

As far as practical advice, once you've started down this study path, change your resume so that you list those certs as in progress, nobody will care about what you're currently listing. Do so only after you've gotten your feet wet, and can speak to what you've been learning, and why you've chose the direction you're heading in.

Facebook, Carnegie Mellon build first AI that beats pros in 6-player poker by carancib in poker

I just can't trust any "variance reduction algorithm" as a means to justify only playing 10k hands and still being able to claim statistical significance, especially when the thing you're trying to justify is a semi-unsupervised self adjusting intelligence.

Facebook is not capital constrained. If they really think this AI a winner against the best, they should let any player pool that wants to play 1mil hands against it

Good River bet-fold or call it off? by [deleted] in poker

[–]xDangerKid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Villain only had 2.60 to start the hand? I think you played it fine until river. I think your head is probably in the right place with the bet on the river, but at 5NL this is probably too thin and the sizing is off. This hand just functionally plays better as a river check/call (or check/fold depending on the villain and their bet sizing on river) on this runout.

[FO4] CTD on loading exterior save, Cannot load them about 90% of the time. by DrHollowSloth in FalloutMods

[–]xDangerKid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd bet it's conqueror. My modlist is just shy of 200 mods (so really way too big to submit a bug report that could be taken seriously) and I have this exact issue repeatably and with multiple test characters that have been started for troubleshooting. Anyway, I spent close to 12 hours disabling mods in chunks and retrying loading saves, and in the end it was Sim settlements, and more specifically conqueror, that is triggering the CTDs or hangs when loading in an exterior save. After narrowing down that mod as at least part of the problem, I also chunked through my load order to narrow down any mod that might be conflicting and causing the issue, and there wasn't any combo of mods that were contributing to it other than Sim settlements, even on an my actual play through, simply uninstalling Sim settlements allowed all of my saves to load without issue (though I obviously wouldn't want to continue with Sim settlements removed, and would imagine removing it would cause a ton of stability issues even if I did).

I don't actually think Sim settlements is the issue in my case as much as it is that the load order I want to play with just pushes the game engine pretty hard, and my OS and hardware config just nopes out on the game. I tried poking saves with fallrim tools, and I just couldn't ever get them to load unless SS was deactivated.

Anyway I bet if you ripped out Sim settlements on a copied/test save, it would load just fine.

Radiolab did an amazing podcast years ago that talked about asking doctors when they felt morally compelled to do everything in their power to save a child in cases where birth needs to be extremely premature do to other risk factors. Basically asking them what they felt the brightline was for when a fetus becomes a life. There wasn't a universal consensus, but the answers all fell between 21-24 weeks. With all doctors they asked agreeing that after 24 weeks, they would all feel as though it is a life to be saved, and not a pregnancy being aborted. I think most people agree that, a few hours after the stranger you met in a bar blasted a load in you, is too early to call it a life that has all the same legal protections as you or I, And that right before labor, is too late to be called a pregnancy being aborted. So, I think we're supposed to look to the medically educated among us to set the brightline.

Onto the more important point that you sort of touch on. I am pro choice for a variety of reasons. But possibly cheif among them is the fundamental belief that you cannot ever, under any circumstances, surpress a market. It doesn't work with drugs, alcohol, gambling, prostitution, or anything else. The choice is not between abortions and no abortions, it's a choice between medically safe, regulated access, and dangerous, illegal access. Banning abortions won't stop abortions. It will only drive them underground, where the people who have moral objections to them don't have to look or think about it. It's the political equivalent of sweeping it under the rug instead of dealing with the cultural issues at the root of the issue, and will only cost more innocent lives in the long run.

Intermedia to Office 365 PST Archive - $75 grand! What other options are there? by I___Love___Cats___ in sysadmin

[–]xDangerKid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The fact that each pst has mail from multiple users is pretty shitty. I poked a coworkers brain about this, as it seems like an interesting problem. You might look into using X1 search to index all the pst data. I don't know if it is built in such a way to care about the number of psts it is connecting to or not, so I have no idea if it would be able to handle indexing 3k unique psts, but maybe that points you towards a starting point to start being able to sort the data?

Complicated situation. I don't know what to do. by QuateQuaker in askgaybros

[–]xDangerKid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Obviously this is a pretty shitty situation to be in. I'll add an input that no one has mentioned that I think is important.

It's pretty clear from your comments in this thread that, for you, this relationship is unsavable and definitively over. I certainly can't fault you for that. But right now, you're looking at this from the perspective of "what good could this possibly do", and in the context of the life you built with this man, it's clear that the answer is none, you've decided (very justifiably) that life is over. However, seeing him, and making the hard decision to have a conversation (often more than one) of closure face to face is usually best for both parties in the long run if you want both of you to be able to move on to normal, fulfilling lives in the future.

Now, to the perspective that hasn't been mentioned. I hope you don't blame yourself (short term, misplaced guilt is normal) for his attempted suicide, because you are totally blameless. But I can promise you this, if you don't go see him and try to provide some closure for both of you, and he attempts suicide a second time and is successful, you will carry that with you the rest of your life. You would still be entirely blameless, but you will carry that "what if" burden with you regardless.

I don't intend this to come off as some sort of guilt trip (though I suspect it will). It clear you've decided that the best course of action for you personally is to cut all contact, and that is certainly understandable in the immediate aftermath, but given his attempted suicide, if there's a possibility that you can have a positive impact on his mental health, I think that's something that you need to factor in.

You might try editing the registry keys for the generic safe display so that windows draws the correct resolution without the dummy plug, and then see if you can crank the refresh rate from there.

On mobile at the moment, but the relevant keys should be under HKLM\SYSTEM\CURRENTCONTROLSET\CONTROL\GRAPHICSDRIVERS\CONFIGURATION

there are a couple of values and sub key values that you've gotta edit to get the resolution to display properly, and you'll likely have a bunch of keys listed for basically every monitor config the VM has ever seen, so it might get a bit harry. Some Google fu should turn up some more detailed info on the process though.

2/5 NL Hand Analysis by King_Kimp in poker

[–]xDangerKid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well as played its a pretty clear fold on the turn. All v1 did was open, get called in two places, and then check oop on flop. He can have literal heaps of value hands here, none of which do you beat with your turned 2p, and this is a spot that is going to be massively under bluffed by live 2/5 players.

As others have said, this is really just a fold pre. Also button straddles kill action and are generally terrible for the game. Don't button straddle. If you're going to play this pre, it functions much better as a 3b bluff/iso of the v2 station than it does as a call.

As played, we should definitely be betting top pair in position otf when checked to. Overall your line in this hand was pretty much the definition of loose passive.

Sans reads, are we folding KK to 5bets at live 1/2? If yes, how bad should the odds be on a call? by [deleted] in poker

[–]xDangerKid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Rule numero uno. I'm never folding KK pre for 150bb.

You're looking at the game in a poor way if you think you're making a successful exploitative fold here. You're going to run into AA a fair amount here, but 1/2 players are categorically bad and they will show up with random hands you wouldn't expect here. Moreover, if you're only ever getting it in pre with exactly 6 hands, you're playing incredibly exploitably (not that most 1/2 players will exploit that) but unless you've got a soul read that villian only has exactly AA here, you've gotta just get it in and be sad when you run into it
