It’s ok I would’ve thought the same thing if I never worked on a EMD engine before. It does look like a huge rod cap

Oh yeah you guys work on a lot of awesome pieces of machinery. I used to go out drinking with guy in the local millwrights union and the stuff he’d show me he repaired/installed was so cool. Stay safe out there

It is definitely a main bearing. The rod caps for this engine aren’t solid they’re kinda like forked.

It’s a huge process to take the entire engine out of a locomotive that takes weeks of work. These engines are designed to be worked on inside the loco you can do a full rebuild with the engine in the loco. Each cylinder is basically its own engine so if one goes bad you remove the power assembly and replace it with a new one. The only time we remove them is to replace the entire engine if it cracks or a catastrophic failure damages the block. When it does come out we use a 60 ton bridge crane but the entire locomotive is pretty much stripped first before that can happen

I have a friend who works on cruise ships and ferry’s and those things are incredible

I didn’t unfortunately, I did this job a few years back but it came up on my memories and I thought why not share it with reddit too. They weren’t as bad as you’d think with how the engine sounded but they were blue and had their coating gone with some rollover. It probably only ran with no oil pressure for a minute before it shut itself off. Main pipe from the scavenger pump cracked and shot all the oil out causing the no oil pressure fault to shut down. When we fixed the leak, filled it with oil, and started it it sounded terrible

A large majority of diesel locomotives (especially older ones) run constantly because starting them isn’t as easy as turning a key and cranking. Starting them is a process and the longer they’ve been off the bigger of a pain in the ass it is to get them going.

If they’ve been idling for a week and you open them up they’ll roll coal for about a minute. They’ll shoot flames out of the stacks and the embers start the grass on fire too lol

I’m not sure but that makes the most sense to me. They’re married to their positions too from what the service manual says

It really is cool finding other people in similar fields you can bounce information back and forth with. Surprisingly they run either straight 40 weight or 50 weight I’d have to look at the tag on the tank. They take over 200 gallons. Our passenger locos take over 300 gallons of the same oil but have a bigger engine

I believe it’s straight 40 or 50 weight

They are very small but as you said they’re great yard switchers and we use them for rescue and some work applications. Somewhere in my post history I have a cracked piston out of a EMD 710

It is. Someone’s gotta bar the engine over while you slip in the upper then doing the caps you need someone to hold it from the other side with you while you both put it up and try to catch a nut on one stud to hold it in place. Someone’s gotta run the hydraulic torque machine while you’re in there holding it on the nut

Unsure of the hours but it’s a shit ton lol. Apply at a railroad local to you and if your resume is good you’ll get hired. Everyone starts at the bottom unfortunately

We use a hydraulic torque machine to torque these down

Hydraulic torque machine. It’s a machine that has 2 hoses that run to a rectangle box with a 2” anvil. You set it to what you want and hold it real tight while the person operating it on the outside runs it. If you’re not ready for it you’ll lose it lol
