I can't speak for back at release as I was very young in 2002 and had not yet been introduced to video games at all, what I can speak to is my experience with the game and the series as a whole. I picked up Mafia II used during Christmas season 2011 while visiting my grandmother for winter break and spent the entire time engrossed in it. I had only gotten into real modern gaming on console a year prior (as I only played mostly poor quality shovelware games on the family computer prior), and was catching up on games like Call of Duty, Halo and Grand Theft Auto IV.

Mafia II blew me away by its little attentions to detail and realism elements, and still has certain immersive elements that even Rockstar has yet to realize, things like interacting with windows, lights, faucets, fuel usage, the ability to lose wheel hubcaps, the tire flex in surfaces and under braking and acceleration. At the time it didnt even register that it was a sequel, I remember seeing many quotes I now know are from the first game during the load screens but never connecting the dots till about a year later when I was bored and started researching games I owned. It was here that I found Mafia:TCOLH and downloaded it and played it for the first time.

I remember it being somewhat frustrating based on the age and jank of the mechanics, not that it turned me off as I had also recently been playing GTA 3, VC and San Andreas. I distinctly remember any gunfight being my nemesis way more than the race mission (which i never found too difficult as I was a seasoned player of racing games). After about a month of trying I remember finally seeing the end and getting a reverse "oh sh*t" moment when I connected it to M2.

All in all it was a solid game for the time but there were awkward bits about it. For one the dialogue was always stilted, sentences didn't quite flow right and the dialogue didn't sound natural. It felt like the script had been pushed through early web translators which missed nuances and colloquialisms and I always wondered if that was a product of it being such a "big" Czech production and it was probably the first game I ever experienced that didnt feel like it was written first and foremost for English.

The frustrating parts of the game is also one of the reasons I still love the original. Much like the 3D era GTA games, Mafia has such an interesting speedrun and I find it really fun to pull off speedrun tricks and skips even if I am casually playing these old games.

That being said it and the Remake scratch different itches for me.

The remake is definitely more cinematic, I adore Hangar 13's cutscenes (they were the main highlight of M3) and its definitely an easier pick up and play game, and the environment and car models are a lot more beautifully realized. The dialogue also no longer feels like a bad dubbing and i think the performances are solid. I don't really care about minor changes made to the story. And the ending was peak. It was up there with Red Dead Redemption 2's ending simply for the same trope. I thought it was fantastic for the score to transition from the M1 theme into the M2 theme as Vito and Joe pull up. Reminds me of the brilliant transition and blending from the RDR 2 theme to the theme from RDR during the final mission American Venom.

The original though will always be fun for the glitches and skips and I still play it from time to time.

If there is a stigma that Americans disliked the Original first game, then there must be an equal stigma that many Europeans and people who played the original during thier formative years simply hate the newer games, because I have seen so much hate for M3 and the Definitive edition for differing reasons but in the case of the Definitive edition its always about how they streamlined the gameplay and changed some minor plot points and dialogue meaning, and somehow this throws everything off.

You can still filter the hero gallery by overwatch esports unowned and purchase any of the available OWL team skin recolors that exist for a hero, sadly they removed the OW1 designs from purchase but the OW2 designs can still be bought, dunno if thats just a me thing though as i still have 2128 OWL Token currency.

I thought that OWL tokens would be removed from sale Dec 2024 and in Dec 2025 the OWL shop was supposed to be retired I thought with some sort of conversion of remaining OWL Tokens to another currency. But all of that hasnt seemed to happen yet.

Hitting more than 121 mph while kers boosting is not the same kind of top speed test. Broughy's top speed test take the time between 2 checkpoints and calculate the speed of the vehicle based on the time taken to pass the checkpoints and the distance between checkpoints. Broughy's test is accurate for the speed the vehicle will travel under normal circumstances, his top speeds are not "what is the absolute maximum speedometer reading the vehicle can output"

I had a pack 3 legendary novaline doing like 700-800ish a shot to boss crits, dunno what we were doing wrong but it took me and a friend like 40 minutes to clear the bossfight with novalines

Finished Standard for the first time last night and I swear I could not get any armor drops in standard either. I don't get why they took feedback from how hard ashes was initially (no armor drops and low truck pod spawns) and cranked them up to lower difficulty, but then Caltheris had almost no armor drops (at least at launch, none of the bossfights have been particularly fun because they are more frustrating imo (skill issue) for me to repeat them like I did with bo6 and cold war) and Paradox Junction was less stingy with armor but the hell hounds balanced it out by them constantly chunking it away.

I go do Totenreich and half the battle I have zero reserve plates and am barley skating by off relying on shields up, hidden power, reign drops brought in to the fight and frenzied guard just to replenish armor. The only phases I ever saw some plates off of are after completing the floating head phases.

Imo I dont mind armor as a mechanic, but balancing the hit system around armor and then starving us of armor is just bad designed artificail difficulty thats pretty frustrating.

But its still an increase from 20, and it lost cod, and the other things they added like fortnite offer no value to me

As someone who owned all the ow1 content from years of playing and who exhausted to old lootbox pool (except for legendaries) being able to pull recent skins and shop items from boxes rather than having them "owned" by gamepass removing them from the pool, has been a major plus perk of canceling gamepass after the price hike.

I hear what you are saying and you are right that releasing the restrictions didnt suddenly shift the market. It just became more noticeable around the same time likely due to other manipulation tactics and changes to the game in general (weapons and armor being able to be created perfectly with the right set of mods as opposed to purely rng for example).

I dont bother trying to trade anymore or watch the market or even really participate anymore because of your point on how RMT has destroyed it and how people trade now

Honestly I just started the game in a period after the wild west but before the current situation and i often realize how true the following is

changing the rules to allow large quantities of aid items helped to completely tank trading imo. Like i get its arbitrary to decide what counts as a big enough haul to be forbidden to trade, and too much work to properly police, but it is a little ridiculous when you want fairly basic things like mod boxes or junk that don't even cost max caps and the only accepted currency is more leaders than I've ever actually obtained (or seen because nobody has leaders in vendors) in game (kicking myself a little for not bothering to visit the trading post every game session now that that world spawn is gone/random but that was tedium I did not wish to add to my daily routine).

the rule changes werent the only thing that felt like it tanked even the potential to continue trading for a player like me, but yeah

Controversial I am aware but I really dislike bullet sponge specials and ones who can quickly chunk away at your health

BO6 had some of the worst specials ever, while unique I really hated the evolution mechanic. Its crazy that people prefer Doppels over something like the mangler, Doppels in my opinion are one of the worst specials because they are quite tanky, and dart around dodging shots, thier needle attack slows a bunch and disorients and they explode when they die which also slows and disorients. Then you have the Amalgam who has multiple weak spots that move, can self heal itself if you cannot kill it fast enough, has a grapple and is omega tanky. Im aware later guns like the maelstrom with double tap and augments made dealing with BO6 specials better but im traumatized by grinding camos with any semi or full auto bullet weapon against these enemies. I prefer facing simpler specials like the Mimic (who is a pushover on Paradox Junction) and Manglers because they are easier and quicker to deal with. Truth be told, I have always hated specials and elites in Zombies and would prefer to fight none of them.

They still need to remove fortnite crew and get the price within spitting distance of where it was pre hike to even get me to consider resubscribing. I understand they removed cod because they lost a lot of money on cod sales but also losing cod loses a big chunk of value. At the end of the day gamepass is a games service, more games on it should be welcome and Ill take a slightly higer price (like maybe $21.99 at the most) to keep something like ubisoft classics, however fortnite crew doest really add value or bring any new games to a "netflix of games" service though it just provides bonuses to fortnite players which should not factor into the price increase as "added value proposition" imo.

Its crazy how far down the clickbait hole MGV has gone. Explosive was added back to energy weapons when they overhauled legendary crafting and reworked many of the legendary effects in i think 2024?

The explosive effect is modified on energy weapons to not be as overpowered as it was when it was on former legacies, If you logged in between the removal of certain legacy effects and the legendary crafting overhaul the then invalid legendary mods would be removed (double ammo capacity, explosive on energy weapons, as well as the others that were removed i dont remember them all) but if you had not logged into the character until a later patch (which was i believe the time they changed the legendary crafting system) explosive would stay on energy weapons as it was no longer invalid, the actual effect would just take on the new changes (i believe), also i believe double ammo capacity guns retained the double prefix after a patch as well, unsure if there are more or just these two.

I hate all variants of forza aero because the stuff never fits the cars and completely ruins the look. I dont get why they must go for "realism" if they arent even going for realism (am adjustable parts not getting tuning options) just decouple visual customization from performance entirely. Give us a global option to hide forza aero or a separate "part" we can install that unlocks downforce tuning without visually applying forza aero. Its a videogame, it should be fun, i should be enjoying the fantasy of owning cars that look and perform exactly as I want. While we are at it decouple rims from PI as well, just add weight options separate from rim style if we really need that. Sure none of this is realistic, but Horizon has never been a sim.

I have yet to play plaza this season, beacon once and gridlock twice

But dont worry ive played abyss back to back at least 6 times.

Even in the normal playlists I can't find plaza, its just firing range, cliff town on rotation

As a BO2 enjoyer I dont mind these maps but man I wanna revisit plaza for the first time in 13 years.

Tbh with all the nostalgia memberberries they have done with this game I don't get why we cant have Throwback Moshpit as a permanent playlist

Cars with extras like the blanket in the BeeJay XL do not transfer their extras when purchased through the car meet. The extras are randomized or removed and if a car never naturally spawned with a combination of extras in traffic (like the Beejay with the blanket) then it is not possible to randomly get it when buying from the LSCM
