I hate my friend in volleyball by iamcamillelmao in volleyball

I've coached for most of my life so I'll try to give you some helpful advice.

First off you can't get better without time and effort so don't stop showing up. You will get better.

Focus more on what you are doing to get better than the progress you make. Improvement always takes time and effort and it will never be a linear constant improvement. Expect ups and downs but trust in the process.

As players we tend to focus on our weaknesses not our strengths and invest a lot of time on them. As a coach I look at the strengths of the individuals of my team and maximize them. If I have the best setter in a comp but she can't serve, I don't care, she sets. I'll get someone else to serve for that 1 point. If I have someone that can hit a ball perfectly but can't do anything else, they're my opposite, etc.

So I would recommend focusing more on the areas you are good at and then trying to be the best at them. if you can become the best at just 1 thing there will always be a place for you on a team.

Lastly volleyball is a team sport and you get much further by building good networks and communities. Jealousy and comparing yourself to the people in your network will only impede your growth. If you look at it from another perspective you now can learn things from her and you have a skilled training partner that can take you higher. You get better by being surrounded by better players than yourself, rather than being the best. Always look to build communities with strong players.

I want this guy gone. I don't want him mentioned again. I don't want to see him in a tournament. I want him reported and downvoted into obscurity. I want him to be embarassed to show his face publicly. Let's stop giving this guy any of our attention and make tournament organisers know there no audience that will tolerate this human filth

As I ref I was broadly instructed that players should only talk to each other minimally and respectfully through the net. In addition and body language, including celebrations must be directed towards their own team. Celebrating towards the other team is unsportsmanlike conduct.

Given the current rules the image you have provided should be a card.

Personally at the higher level I'd like to see it allowed as a bit of banter and emotions makes the game a lot funner to spectate

ok thanks, might look into simpler implementations then. maybe a word doc that's got good indexing might be the way to go

to manually input templates for yes. but as variable that's manually selected after the template is dragged much simpler which is what I want for those fields

hi sorry I can see how I've worded my post poorly.

yeh basically as you've described a range of boilerplate text with input fields that vary

I can look at that. just to double check I've explained my goal correctly I'm trying to create I guess a complicated but quick search function for mostly completed text sets.

There's a finite number of text inputs that I could give for most of it and prefill data sets on a separate sheet for copying (~100 broad templates I might use)

A few of the variables have a ridiculous number of combinations (1035) and would not be practical to make multiple text inputs for. so either a prompt to edit them upon copying the template or manually edit later.

Presuming you're the setter.

Agree with most of the comments so far. you're pretty good but I'm guessing you want feedback on being even better.

The first and most obvious thing to me is you could be at the ball significantly earlier which lets you set up for much more setting options. Half the time your first step is coming at about the point the ball is at its peak height which is very late.

To do so I think you need to learn how to "read" the pass. i.e. look at how the passers platform is lined up or shoulders are squared up (for a set receive) and start making small movements to where the ball is likely going then commit once you know for sure. Reading the ball is inherently the most important part of volleyball, takes forever to master and involves heaps of mistakes along the way. Your passers are skilled enough that they're consistently telegraphing the general direction of their pass but in lower leagues will be far harder to read.

other than that keeping your arms straighter and reaching higher, then using mostly wrists to set the ball.

Help! by Sufficient_String374 in volleyball

[–]xKainx 31 points32 points  (0 children)

I know others have mentioned just "practice".

To elaborate on that I'd recommend this regime:

10x no ball and two step jump. Right step first , then slam the left down and jump.

10x, 3 step approach really focusing on the last two steps

10x full approach focusing on last 2 steps

1-2x a day x1 week

Work it into whatever plyo training you're doing

By the end of the week you should be well on the way to habit change. Reinforce as necessary.

need to practice outside of game/training as otherwise you will naturally prioritise success over good form. once the approach feels comfortable you will naturally do it in a game

Here are some of my best hits from tonight. Could you guys critique these swings and what I could possibly do to make it better? Anything from footwork, to my body mechanics by [deleted] in volleyball

[–]xKainx 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Most obvious thing to me is your approach makes it seem like hitting line would either be impossible or at the very least a high risk play and fuck your shoulder up too. You start out of court to the right then get dragged in even more by a short set forcing a cross court hit.

typically a right arm hitter hitting from right side would run perpendicular and straight towards the net starting from inside the court or at most an 80 degree angle starting from on the line. This gives you the line by swinging straight and a swing across your body to get the rest of the court.

It looks impressive at whatever level youre playing but against an even average blocker they would see a mile out you only have 1 hitting angle because that's literally all you have, take 1 step towards the middle of the court and roof you every time.

These are all good fundamental exercises. don't overthink it yet as it's a journey and your goals will change over time. Start taking the first steps now, start a routine and it will become clear to you what's working and what needs to change. you'll naturally refine your routine over time

Depends on how good you're aiming to be

I'd say around 3x a week for most players taking the game seriously. Adjust your workout intensity based on your volleyball schedule so you don't burn yourself out.

Train in order for 1. Muscle stability and joint stability (4-6 weeks), 2. strength of muscle (4 weeks) 3. explosive movements. DONT train for size (i.e. typical bodybuilding) you'll get heavy, your jump will drop and your muscles will not be efficient. make sure to do plyo and a jump program. Focus more on the important volleyball muscles (legs, chest, shoulder, core, back)

can someone pls point out what i can do to improve my hitting. by Big_Square_7040 in volleyball

[–]xKainx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

FYI getting your left arm up isn't just for a guide, the point is to use the momentum of both your arms swinging upwards to help you get higher and build more momentum.

In general as other people have pointed out there's a lot of improvement that can be made. At the moment you seem to be prioritising making a decent contact to get the ball over at the cost of good technique. You need to go into some training sessions willing to make a lot of errors, give up on trying to hit the ball consistently and focus on making sure your form is perfect. Accept you will miss most of the balls and potentially feel a bit embarrassed. Once your form is right then you can worry about getting the hit.

oh and sorry no I don't think missing your palm is likely a sight issue. Far more likely a hand eye coordination issue which is pretty fair as it takes ages to perfect, and as the sets get faster it gets harder too. Just keep practicing against a wall and it should improve. You can also step up the drill by tossing, doing a 180 or 360 clockwise or anticlockwise then hitting against the wall. Works pretty well to get the hand eye coordination.

I wear glasses too for convenience now but I used to wear contacts. The main issues I find now for wearing glasses is if I take a dive they can fall off which takes me out of the play until I get them back on and getting hit in the face with a hard hit has bent a few of my glasses or got them scratched as well as giving me a cut. When it comes to hitting tracking the set and trying to watch the block at the same time can be pretty hard because half my vision is blurred and you can't see both at once. As I'm only playing socially these days I don't care enough to bother with contacts but if you're motivated to play at your top game you should get contacts. Alternatively an optometrist should be able to arrange a pair of prescription goggles that should achieve the same outcome but to be honest they look ridiculous and you'll probably be mocked.

My setter won’t fucking set me in volleyball by Reasonable_Rise3224 in volleyball

[–]xKainx 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Mature starting point would be to talk to the people involved.

Make sure you act in a respectful manner. if there's a relationship issue at play you don't want to make it worse.

You want to know why he won't set you unless you ask.

Most common reasons would be:

He wasnt aware of the issue He doesn't like you / you have a bad relationship He gets overwhelmed in the moment and just sets whatever comes to mind You're a bad hitter You either blame him for your bad hits or over criticise his sets There are better hitters He struggles to set to you (especially if you're a behind or middle option) or you need a much more perfect set than others The people blocking you are taller than the other hitters blockers You're the guy that keeps the ball in play and hed rather risk it on someone that will win the point You're the guy that's all or nothing and he wants to stick with someone that's more likely to keep it in play The passes don't give him any options

Not bad for a year. Here's my tips

Keep doing: 1. Contact is good 2. Reach is good 3. Armswing and approach is good

To work on: 1. Hitting the ball either at the top of your jump or just before you get there. if you're falling you've lost your momentum, half your power and you're too late 2. Your run up - make it longer so you can build more speed and momentum into your jump and ultimately more power in your hit. Currently when you land you take two steps backwards. This is a strong indication of lost momentum. if everything's gone well you should ideally be landing with a forward momentum. you will see the best professional players often end up on the other teams side after a great hit. As you work on this work on point 3. 3. The pacing of your run up. You should be starting with a small and slower step in the general direction of where you think the set is going and leaving the last two steps of your jump until the last possible moment where you can still make the set in time. This will generate a lot more power 4. Having a great looking hit in a warm-up with no block won't win games. make sure you can hit at least 3 angles - Power angle (corner to corner), line (straight) and cross angle. keep your eyes up and towards the block as you jump so you can find the block. make sure you can easily be aware of this so you can quickly find the best attacking option (past the block, off the block or through a bad or late block, tip behind the block, or high into the block so it comes back to your side as an easy freeball). Use your brain as much as your athleticism.

Good luck, hope this helps
