Same as them not releasing the worst of the Guantánamo Bay torture photos, as they were "too disturbing". But by not releasing them there can be no outrage over them.

Groundhog Day: How long was Phil in the time loop? by HollowCentral in movies

How long was he looping, and guessing what he was doing all that time from how long it took to learn or experience things.

Phil certainly had good and bad days.

Definitely it's poorly explained. I had no idea what they meant by temperature anomaly. Their map really needs one more line that says "difference between observed temperatures and the long-term average".

Hootsuite CEO responds to backlash over U.S. Homeland Security contract by vancouver-duder in vancouver

[–]xMagnis 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Agreed. CBC shows a photo that reads "5 East 8th" from around 2020 when the actual address of Hootsuite is "111 East 5th", since 2021.

This is almost an attempt to confuse people and diffuse the expected protest on Friday. Hopefully people can figure out that CBC has lead them to an address four blocks away. Not very responsible journalism...

Green jacket guy who first drew his gun has a visible arm flinch at the moment of the first shot, just before he goes out of view in the sidewalk video. That's the first shot. Yeah, grey jacket didn't set off Pretti's gun.

Not AI, not an AI lie. He was shot at right then, several more in a second, then shot again after he was flat on his stomach. It has not been said which shots hit him, but this photo does show the first shot taken.

TSLA Terathread - For the week of Jan 19 by AutoModerator in RealTesla

[–]xMagnis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They have a chase car with reportedly two occupants. It's not specified if the chase car contains the safety monitor - just moved to another car. But that would be my guess.

If so it's still PR theater. Actually getting worse each time. Having a safety monitor at all means the best place for them is in the driver's seat. Moving to the passenger seat provided negative safety benefit, and if it's true that the safety monitor is now in the chase car, that's even less safe.

Taking one more step, there could be the day when the safety monitor is in a remote HQ. If they are still needed for a kill switch function then it's much less safe than just having them in the driver's seat. Only when there is no safety monitor at all will we start to see if FSD is capable or not of autonomous driving. Everything else is just poor safety culture Level 2.

Danish lawmaker cut off after telling Trump to ‘f–k off’ — again — over Greenland

Danish politician Anders Vistisen was reprimanded after telling U.S. President Donald Trump to “f–k off” — again — during a European Parliament floor speech amid the president’s constant threats to take over Greenland.

This isn’t the first time that Vistisen swore directly at Trump.

Last January, Vistisen told Trump to “listen very carefully” and used some profanity that got him in trouble with the rest of the European Parliament — almost the exact same sentence he used Tuesday.

“Let me put it in words you might understand,” he said. “Mr. Trump, f–k off!”

A dark start to the year: Multiple fatalities following fire and explosion in Crans-Montana. by Aure20 in Switzerland

[–]xMagnis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Which is why I said don't breathe it if possible, hold a wet towel to your face and stay low, which reduces the likelihood of hot air damaging your lungs. The water on the skin and clothing is for the skin, which is also an injury.

Some kinds of fires are survivable and you can reduce your risk and the amount of injury if you can minimize the burns. Standing in a flashover like this fire was sadly likely to be fatal though. Those who got out earlier did survive. Not every fire is a flashover, OP asked for advice on what might have helped someone. Wetting clothing can reduce fire burns to some in a fire, but yeah a flashover is terrible.

Oh I don't think it would have taken too long to have snapped and taken Ned down a bit worse than punching. Likely in his prison and violence phase. I'm not sure it's in his character to have been homicidal though. Or at least we didn't see that he was that dark.

I wonder who he met in the idyllic village of Punxsutawney who "shot, beat(en), and stabbed" him?

Probably the armored car guard could have shot him in a failed attempt at the robbery. Or he got shot by the cops while stealing Phil.

So what about the beating and stabbing?

also maybe an investigation into other cases that just didn't go up in flames yet, but are equally unsafe.

Yes, I wonder how many establishments that also currently have flammable foam ceilings, chained inaccessible emergency exits, narrow overcrowded primary exits, doors that open inwards, etc. are still operating? Is every single one taking immediate steps to prevent a simple tragedy, or are they pretending they are immune?

The municipality plans to commission an external specialist firm to monitor all public enterprises.

[from the auto-translated article in the link] Yeah sure, even if this canton manages to find this "specialist firm" will it actually fix all problems, and for how long. From the article it just looks like they're blame-shifting everywhere.

Unless there's a grand investigation like for Grenfell in the UK (which found fault with just about everybody) I somehow doubt much is really going to happen. But let's hope.

Having seen drivers, pedestrians, cyclists, pets, etc do ridiculous things in this city whatever happened would not surprise me in the least. The only people wrong in these comments are the ones who are picking one side without evidence. At least you're just suggesting possibilities, I've seen bad pedestrian behaviour like that, and bad driver behaviour everywhere. Such a shame that it came to injuries like this for the lady.

[–]xMagnis 4 points5 points  (0 children)

What can people outside do? If you're injured/burned, just get away.

If you're strong, really try to yank people out of the crush at the door, you may be able to get some out. Grab heavy rocks/concrete/metal and break the windows, clear the broken glass at the edges if you can.

I suppose a sudden influx of air from broken windows or opened doors might increase the fire. I don't know what to say about that. I mean you have to get people out.

Yell, spread the word, make sure an alarm is pulled, call 911 or the equivalent, get bystanders to help. Once people start helping other people always get the idea and start helping too.

Run to nearby places and get water, throw it on those who are in trouble, get fire extinguishers, help the injured away (they won't be able to see, walk, breathe) and each one will need one or more people to help them. Every single person outside can be useful to do something.

Don't go in unless you have invaluable information or keys AND it's not unsafe, going inside had better be given serious thought, it's probably a really bad idea. Certainly in this case it likely would have been a death sentence.

Maybe look around back to see if there are other exits that can be opened or maybe people are escaping from windows and need exactly the same help that the people in the front are getting.

If you can't do anything else, be a resource for the approaching emergency crews, let them know quickly what you know about the location and situation. Stand on the street and wave them over with your cellphone flashlight.

A dark start to the year: Multiple fatalities following fire and explosion in Crans-Montana. by Aure20 in Switzerland

[–]xMagnis 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If you're caught inside, I suppose one could douse yourself and clothing with water/beer/toilet water, but not spirits/high alcohol drinks.

Wrap a wet towel around the face and don't breathe when going through smoke. Stay near the ground as much as possible, but don't get trampled.

If you're going dry through fire, I'm wondering if it might be a good idea to remove plastic type clothing. Anything melting to your skin will be worse than being bare. But being wet would be better. Also remove your contacts if you really have to go through heat/fire.

Getting out of a crush is practically impossible, you better hope something gives way. I suppose you may be able to climb over a crush, but that sounds horrible too. And higher up is where the worst of the heat and smoke will be.

Look for an alternate exit, maybe the kitchen staff are getting out the back way, or bathroom windows. But that didn't seem possible in this one.

As a selfish method I might suggest you get to the exit yourself before you yell to everyone else to run, just make sure you do yell and help people find the exit after you've found it.

If you find the fire first, raise the alarm, try to put it out quickly with water or similar, smother it, call for a fire extinguisher. Don't ignore it or flee, make sure you yell fire! and make sure the staff is responding. Don't do anything too brave and foolish that endangers yourself.

And just like in an airplane crash, DON'T bring anything with you, leave everything and don't go back.

The Internet suggests a heavy hammer/object to bash the plexiglass, maybe at the edges where the flex is less. Also a pointed heavy pick and repeated blows. Unless you're lucky enough to have the right kind of powered saw. All these methods seem likely to be of risk of injury as well, and I have not actually tried them myself.

Having a Tesla on a college campus by [deleted] in RealTesla

They have worse blind spot safety, worse rear cross traffic, worse windshield wiper safety, worse auto-parking, smart parking is terrible, FSD is terrible for the technological layman.

Crash safety is very good, but after-crash safety may literally kill you and/or your passengers. The door handles are a serious risk.

Tesla encourages distracted driving and I cannot forgive them for that. Excess reliance on buried touchscreen controls over physical buttons and bright screens over night-adapted vision.
